  • "Free range" sadly doesn't mean lush pastures or the chickens able to wander freely into the grass for a nice scratch at the dirt. It can mean a large factory stuffed full with chickens who can't move and a few able to get out of the small opening to the outdoors, but most never see day light.

How can we tell the difference before we buy them????????

They both say "free range", they both have a picture of a grassy pasture, they are both more expensive than "non-free range chickens". HOW?

  • @EmilyTheStrange98 My mother was not happy, too... she got used to it...

  • He killed the chickens to SHOW YOU what really happens, it happens every day.. and it would have happened either way.. on tv or off

  • But then... why did he still kill those chicks at the beginning?

  • @VelociralexBojarzin The male chicks? Because they don't lay eggs. Either way they were going to die, whether it was at the company plant, or infront of those ppl :(

  • Well no point in crying about it.

  • 1:10 they don't censor "fuck" but they censor "cunt"?! LOL

  • Check out the video Meet your Meat.

  • @BlueEagle8 i saw that and that was sad and scary as hell ! :(

  • I'M SO GLAD I'M A VEGETARIAN!i always try to tell my friends to be vegetarian but they just don't listen

  • @zhengyangyeh FYI, Vegetarians eat eggs. If you don't eat eggs or drink animal milk then you are vegan.

  • In Islam we dont treat animals like this.... even when we do slaughter them for food... we dont use machines.. but hire a Muslim slaughter to say a prayer and with their hands they quickly cut deep into the necks of EACH the chickens, so they dont suffer but instead die quickly. BECOZ IN ISLAM ANIMAL CRUELTY IS FORBIDDEN.

  • @S02

Yeah too bad it completely condones the cruelty and subjugation of non-Muslim people.

But atleast your animals don't feel any pain either.

  • I think this is a great episode. It teaches us where food comes from without trying to sugar coat it too much.

  • Chickens need to be respected.

  • The male chicks, haha

  • knowing from where the food come, make us more responsible and more wise when we shop for food.

  • @sapus74

    I hope so. :-(

  • I don't think this programme is going to be of much use if people are still going to continue to purchase meat!Sure,we now know how they're getting slaughtered, wish a better environment off for them but so what? That's just giving the death row prisoner a bigger cell and gourmet meals. If you really care for them,go vegan.

  • Nasty factory farming...will be the demise of the human race. Also will spawn new viruses and disease. Disgusting. No wonder the race is slowly getting sicker & sicker.

  • If your not prepared to kill a chicken or at least know how it's done and you think it's disgusting, then don't eat the chicken, as simple as that. this episode allows the public to know the process of how the chicken gets on their plate. You respect your food more and appreciate the hands that brought the food to your plate. Well done Jamie!

  • shut up...

  • Well done, Jamie, you're one of the few, who show what reality is like.

  • and his only showing the tip of the icberg

  • Why couldn't the male chicks be transfered to the meat farming industry, or just given away or something?

  • @jacobflaschen Laying hens and broiler chickens are two different breeds, each optimized for what they do best. Laying hens don't grow large enough fast enough to be profitable to the poultry industry. Hundreds of millions of male baby chicks are killed each year in the US alone. It's quite disgusting, really. People who give up meat to boycott animal cruelty but still eat eggs are living in a fantasy world.

  • good show and well done jamie for showing the reality

  • some people are really to immature to watch programs like this. His motive is to shock, and in many cases thats the only way to attract peoples attention and for them to start taking action. Trust me, what he did was nothing compared to what some chickens have to suffer with. Im a meat eater, but i still think animals should be reared in a healthy environment.

  • Kevkevinkev - hear hear. I believe very strongly that if we want to eat meat we should know where it comes from and be prepared to kill it ourselves, PERSONALLY - at least once - so we all know what's involved. I have done so with chickens, ducks and pigs in my wife's home village. One thing I can say tho' is that they all roam freely and are not caged. Respect to Jamie for showing this.

  • Far from being disgusted at the killing of the male chicks, I actually thought that the carbon dioxide asphyxiation was really a relatively compassionate method of killing the male chicks and I'm surprised that's it's such a standard practice worldwide. From all I've read about their other methods, I would have expected much worse from the livestock industry.

  • Is it really? I heard that the standard practice in the US is to throw them in a woodchipper. No idea how true that is.

  • meat*

  • And just because we eat them doesn't mean they shouldn't be treated fairly whilst they live. Goes to same for all CAFO raised animals. And when raised in those conditions it can become unhealthy for people to eat. since they are fed: same species mean, feathers, hair, skin, hooves, and blood, plastic, manure of other animals, and large amounts of antibiotics.

  • Chickens are the most mistreated of all factory farmed animals. They are beaten by farmers, thrown around like objects instead of animals, and given so many steroids and over fed so much that their legs collapse under their own weight. Just because they are birds doesn't mean they aren't animals......

  • this is such an amazing program, we really need more of this kind of stuff on tv. once theyve seen where their food comes from will they still be hungry? thats genious. Jamie doesnt kill chickens for fun, the chickens he kills here would suffer exactly the same fate only behind closed doors. yes it makes me, as a lifelong vegetarian and animal lover, feel sick too, but you would be shocked at how many kids and even adults do not know that meat and animals are related, let alone how theyre reared

  • Thats the point, it happens every day en mass

  • We put baby chicks in the same class as puppies and kittens because they're so cute and fuzzy. That's one of the reasons why this was so hard to watch!

Poor little chicks struggling and closing their eyes for the last time . . .

This is one of the reasons why I voted for Proposition 2 here in California that allowed for chickens to be treated more adequately in farms.

I take no sides on the vegetarian issue, but I do think that animals should be treated well before they're slaughtered.

  • Props to Jamie for doing this show. People really need to have more respect for their food. People are so detached from the butchering process when they buy meats from the supermarket.

  • @kevkevinkev the sad thing is that they thing they are just food and not animals with feelings...

  • This comment is totally fair, and I don't understand why it's been thumbs-downed. Our action (and inaction) in industrialised nations contribute to global poverty, suffering, war, famine and death in a very real way. A look into the results of IMF and World Bank policies show that, rather than equalising world wealth, the Bretton Woods programs have taken billions from developing nations and given it to us. This program is important, but it's important to not be complacent about humanitarianism.

  • there replaying Jamie's fowl dinners in New Zeland this weekend, that's good coz more people will understand about factory farming

  • Well, I think we shouldn't stop eating meat. But he's right. We should give the animals a good live and treat and if it has to get slaughtered, it should get quickly and less painfull. He did get his attention.

Sad about the chickens, but it wakened some people.

  • Don't eat chickens, and don't eat turkeys.

  • This is not a joke, when they said this may be disturbing to views i made it full screen

  • respect to Jamie:)

  • Very thought-provoking stuff, it may be harsh for some viewers to watch, but each and every one of us deserves to know the truth about what goes on in our country. I've personally seen far worse than this in 'Where Does Our Food Come From' which was more like a brutal horror house than a slaughter house. I could only watch that ten minutes at a time, but I praise Jamie Oliver for doing this. He's a good, strong, honest gentleman.

  • thanks for upload! i saw that. few days ago. wow that makes me shocked.
