The thicker gauge string you use the louder and darker (bassier) it sounds. I use a standard 7 string set with a .72 gauge for the low F# (sometimes E) and honestly I am thinking about going back to a .68. Its hard to explain but the thicker you get the more the string takes the properties of a gong and just rings more. If you want a tight tone with an 8 string guitar you need to get a longer scale length not thicker strings. Something like a 28 inch scale length.
@STERNrogering Kind of all of it. Higher gauge makes the strings less "floppy". Yet again the pickups are more important than the string gauge (when talking about a rather small difference of let's say 0.90s or 0.72s) because they basically the termine the clearence of the output. Tosin and Javier use EMG 808 so those should be totally fine, even though most people think that Bareknuckles or Duncan Blackouts give better sound, especially when playing bigger chords.
That was beautiful. I'm looking into getting an 8 string soon to learn most of weightless, I learned much of their self titled on a 7 but I feel like taking the next step. Did you tab this or find a tab or play it by ear?
@xcarborundumx I used the tab, which had some mistakes so I watched Tosin play it in a video to fix them, so a bit of both. On this song he actually plays a guitar that has 2 extra low frets on the top 2 strings, so I can't play it exactly how he does.
That was sick. Excellent hybrid picking

question, will replacing the strings with a higher guage give 8 strings better tone, or is it the pick ups, or something else entirely,
