Enjoy these people while they're still here. After guys like this are gone, they're gone, and that's it. We used to get Glen Campbell, Jim Croce, Harry Chapin, James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Emmylou Harris, Carly Simon, Carole King and Joni Mitchell. Now we get 50cent, Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga. Meh.
Sad. When they talk of great singers and songwriters of the 70's it is always Elton, Billy, Sweet Baby James, Carly, and Carol and seldom does Jim come up. But real musicians know true talent. Shit man even Jerry Reed did a whole fuckin album of the Philly natives songs! Jim and Maury gave us some of the most beautiful songs and simple yet timeless arrangements that are treasured almost 40 yrs after that tragic plane crash. RIP:(
Besides Croce himself, this is one of the best renditions I've heard by another artist. He's true to the spirit of the song while making it distinctively his own.
I played in Glen's band for about 6 years in the mid 80s early 90s and never played this with him, but it's beautiful and just another of the remarkable ways he makes every song his own. I continue to have a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for Glen as a musician, singer, entertainer and human being.
he looks like a cat. lol. i like it though, except that the rythim is more of a walz... 123 123 123.. croce's version is more like 12341234.. if you get my meanin
You may not believe what this song REALLY means. Find out at the blog SongSense.info. They've got all the details. Seriously, all the stuff they tell you there is incredible.
Songwriting? Emotion? Feeling? Do they exist in pop music anymore? Not really. This reminds us of a time when we found all those things every time we turned on the radio.
I dont know, it looks like he's not playing at all. I dont understand how he can be hitting some of those bass notes without actually having his fingers on the bass notes and some of the fills are off from his finger movements... At first i thought he was hitting those notes with his thumb but he's not hitting them at all. I think he has a bass player or another guitar playing half the stuff... His voice is amazing though! lol
This rendition is understated as to appear easy . There's a handful players at best in the world who could play the guitar with such ease and but would be incapable of singing with such emotion. Glen is a just a musical monster.
The worst memories that you can have are regrets. When you wake in the morning, smile for the simple fact that you woke. Knowing what a gift life is, is the secret to it.
so nice to see a song done with so much skill and confidence. no screaming or thrashing or rushing. just calmness and so nice. mesmerizing. great song. outstanding performance..
@BASICISAB Glen's ballad music (to quote Shakespeare) "hath power to soothe the savage beast."
And rarely today (a cynical age, most sadly among the young, who affect glibness ) does anyone sing emotional honesty, though "Confession is good for the soul." May he inspire neo- emotional truth telling.
@nelco69 Today, older, Glen's voice is still good/great -- but different: more baritone, less youthfully meltingly melodious and soulfully romantic. Now he infuses more will, more acting (some comedy, as in duet "Jackson," and stage wizardry as in his playing the William Tell Overture w/ guitar atop his head) into his performances: his persona is now more the worldly experienced, somewhat jaded elder; more authoritative, wastes no time, suffers no fools. A grand master of technical brisance.
@JudgeJulieLit I could not agree with you more, i have been listening to him since the 60's and for me he has only got better with age, he was in my home town of Aberdeen Scotland a couple of months ago, unfortunitly i could not get tickets for his shows, but my ant went to see him, and she said that he got a standing ovation for every song, a true legend, long may he continue
He doesn't look like he's playing because this song is child's play for him! Glen is one of the finest guitarist of our time. Google, "The Wrecking Crew" and you'll see he was involved in THOUSANDS of songs for others.
there's two guitars in this song. it's quite hard to play it with one guitar but it's possible still. glen is just playing the 'guitar 2' while in the background, there's a guitar 1 being played. (:
kered74 is an assface..lol and prolly trailer trash..this is such an amazing song...and im someone who mainly listens to metal and techno and this song is still great ^_^ along with Piano Man by Billy Joel
It's just sad that you have to post a comment like that to a great song like this. Even if he didnt play the guitar for this recording he has played it at some point in time. Which is probably more than you ever did. So please do us all a favor and return to your trailer and stay there the rest of your life.
You're right, kered. You don't think. Until/unless you learn that skill, better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool rather than open it & remove all doubt.
@kered74 Glen "gay"? His sexual history (e.g., a dad at 17; and Tanya, 22 years younger, said he was super virile) argues otherwise. Here his outfit is like 1970s Elvis's white jumpsuit -- a superstar version of that era's newly "peacock" flamboyant male attire.
Why would you need to find a CD? Just download this song or others of your fancy right from the internet. I will not. download new stuff from artist but older things like this where the artist etc. has already made thier money. Well. . .why not?
@hatikvah79 Ich weiss nicht wo du durfst einem CD finden, aber vieles Gluck darin ! (Als ein Amerikaner, nicht oft kann Ich Fallen [opportunities] um Deutsch zu sprechen.)
No way is Glen underrated. Have you seen this guy play guitar with Jerry Reed ? awesome!!. Glen's been on my radio for years and I think he's brilliant.
@sg72646 We perceptive Glen fans don't underrate his singing. But too many people do mistake his simplicity, his open unadorned undistracted genuine emotional vulnerability, for lack of art. (And so too is, for example Karen Carpenter underrated.) As for his guitar super virtuosity, until recently being Wikipedia and YouTube educated (and myself not a guitarist), I had no idea. But now I've seen, for example, Glen at 74 play the William Tell Overture, guitar atop his head!
Superb!! I met him once when he did a benefit concert at our high school auditoriom here in MS. Afterwards he met everyone back stage & signed autographs & let ppl take pix. I got an 8 x 10 with his arm around my waist. :)
While driving to work one morning, Iheard him on my XM, he was a guest on Fox news and as a lead
in to a commercial, he started playing "Lineman". It was INCREDIBLE to hear the complex
and expressive chords he was playing to paint that song - and then, he began to sing. His voice is still wonderful. I sure hope he gets his due. I would love to have a recording of him unplugged.
@thmoorer A fitting simile for Glen's voice (given his guitar virtuosity) is that it itself is like a 12-string guitar -- capable of expressing myriad unexpected subtle sound variations. For most of his career a tenor with some falsetto soprano (as in "Cryin"), now in the autumn of his years one hears more baritone. Fascinating. As Joni Mitchell prescribes, he "strike[s] every chord that he feels," gives a full, rich musical diapaison of emotional shading.
@waygonedaddy and 2tomjampap, "[I]ndoctrinated" [sic], inducted. But @tomjampap, good comment -- but that most folks born after 1968 likely don't know that. And while I agree Glen's guitarring is amazing, I wonder if the world's flamenco virtuosi (a separate competitive category?) were included in that rating.
campbells voice and the way he phrases words melodically is simply beautiful. Meet Glen Campbell the new album is a return to the strengths of the jimmy webb late 60's classic era, beautifully arranged stuff
He is the ultimate legend. So incredibly underrated. One of the best artists of all time, and can actually play instruments! Glen you are a legend 100%.
@AJBluesman While Glen's covers of Jim Croce's "Time in a Bottle" and Roy Orbison's "Cryin" lack the unique felicities of the singer and personae who first sang those songs greatly, still -- uniquely Glen's versions are that of the archetypally handsome love winner who nevertheless experiences love tragedy and sorrow.
