A friend of my father killed 10 unarmed, German POW's after the Malmedy Massacre became public knowledge. He became a preacher after the war to atone for that. On the other hand, Dad baked a cake to celebrate Christmas dinner, 1944, with his German guards and then they all sang 'Silent Night' or 'Still Nacht' together.

If the USA had not sacrificed 500,000 young men to die in Europe fighting the nazis, we would all be speaking German today. If the USA had not stopped the Japanese Empire in the Pacific region, WW2 might have lasted another ten years. Americans give more to help impoverished nations than any other country.

@AfricanSouthernCross My dad trained Haille Salasie's airborne troops in 1962 or 63?, he told of milions of dollars worth of the latest American-supplied, brand-new wheat combines and associated farming equipment sitting in a field, rotting and rusting away, unused. If American aid can be faulted, we should have 'Down-Teched' the aid and simplified the tools and supplies to the basics appropriate to the region and culture. That would have required admitting African backwardness. Not very PC.

This genocide had much to do with the decline of French influence in Africa. The Hutu govt. were strongly Francophone, whereas the RPF were based in Uganda, and English speaking African state.
France had direct knowledge of the preparations for the genocide, [the killings were NOT spontaneous, but planned for, prepared & equipped from six years before], but did nothing to prevent it. It suited them to see the Tutsi wiped out.
After the RPF victory Rwanda adopted English as its official language

We humans really are despicable creatures. Killing those who have done no harm or killing for an old hate. We make ourselves suffer just because of the sins of our fathers. Throughout time, we have fought and killed men, women, and children for our own selfish gains or for sheer revenge. I find it funny though how people promote glory in war and killing. They should expect things of this matter to occur especially if we continue to glorify war.

the really SAD part is that all this was just because of some old hatred between different tribes that somehow accumulated in two months of war. This is even more stupid than racial hatred or the nazi hatred for jews.
In these two months approximately 1 million people were killed. To give an example, during the holocaust with a span of 6 years approx. 6 million jews were killed.
