  • At 2:12 the look on his face after his daughter tells him she likes "Tool"

  • He was one of my influences back in the day..How is this relevant now?? How can he sit back and talk shit..Gene Simmons should crush his big fat pumpkin head with his boot...Don ..listen to you critique people...Your a Fucking Mess..

  • @halford3256 shut your stupid mouth!!! Don would slap the shit out of you for talking like this!

  • @vipent5 don..your a monkey

  • @halford3256 Get off his jock for fucks sake. He's telling the truth about Gene Simmons and his attention whore wife. Both of them are money grubbin reality show pigs. Kiss was always about the money, a whole band of fucking Jews. I have not heard Halford lately but i'm confident he doesn't howl and holler as good as he used too. its called "getting older."

How did Dio reinvent himself? hes fucking dead!

  • @UberKrispy ..Ha..Listen to Halford ..and you'll see what a tool Don is vocally because he doesn't give a fuck about anyone but himself..I understand its about getting older and the male voice declines..I am a vocalist. Dio reinvented himself VOCALLY as his voice declined..So did Geoff Tate..Your remark about Ronnie shows your an ignorant Hillbilly. Educate yourself before yo speak..cause now u sound just like the idiot in the video.

  • @halford3256 Bullshit, I've seen Geoff tate's recent videos and when he tries to scream he sounds like a cat with its balls in a mousetrap.

And I'm 100% sure Halford also sounds like shit, all those years of touring and screaming and being an ass cowboy have got to take its toll. Look I know you have a vendetta against Don Dokken, but don't tell us that a vocalist should 'reinvent' himself. You can either sing the song the way it was meant to be sung, or you can't. You prob can't sing for shit

  • @halford3256 Your user name is "Halford" you have 5 comments on this page about how you hate Dokken but how awesome the ass pirate Rob Halford sounds these days. Guess what dumbass? People who go see these old, washed up acts don't really give a shit whast they sound like. they just want to see their favorite acts from years gone by, for nostalgia or whatever the fuck you want to call it. Quit acting like such an assclown. Go put on your assless chaps, you'll feel better.

  • @UberKrispy ..Your reply shows all, your education level. Either your his publicist or legally deaf and dumb. Merry Christmas...Hes critiquing other singers...hahah..look at his Kiss of Death vids..you'll change your mind...I spend my hard earned money to see a GREAT show..A great band...I simply state he doesn't have it anymore. Simple. Watch the We Are Stars..Hearing Aid video...The ONLY vocalist DIO has a problem with is Don...nuff said

  • @halford3256 Yeah my education level is "Reality". You have a hardon for Don Dokken, because halford is JUST as washed up. Halford is an old, broken down fag ass pirate. I could give a shit what Dio said, he wasn't God like everyone says he was. I bought "The last In Line" NEW ON CASSETTE in 1985 and smoke a giant bowl whilst listening to it for the first time. I forgot more about heavy metal than you'll ever know. So fuck off Halford3256 you washed up rump riding ass pirate (Like your hero Rob)

  • @UberKrispy ..your responses are epic..Lou...zer

  • @halford3256 Merry Christmas to you and your idol, that washed up, has been, rump-riding ass pirate ROB HALFORD.

Rob is 60 years old but still SOUNDS GREAT and can still scream out the Priest hits like he did 30 years ago! (thats Sarcasm you dipshit!) Yes he "reinvented" himself, whatever the Fuck THAT means

  • Learn how to fucking sing again and stop ripping your fans off by not taking this seriously...Your the circus leader now. You sound like a buffoooon live now..Kiss Of Death..why are you still trying to sing this live if you cant adjust......A male voice changes over time..you need to adapt to this change...Halford has, Dio , Dickenson, Gillan...they reinvented themselves.....You cant...or are to lazy now.....IT IS OVER DON.......

  • @halford3256 It is cigarettes that have ruined his voice

  • Stryped yellow pants? Is he talking about Stryper?

  • @guitarroxxer02 He's talking about one of DLR's outfits from the Women and Children First era. Check out the video to Van Halen's - And the Cradle Will Rock shot for some TV show back in the day.

  • The Dokken the Lynch Mob!! Sweetness Forever!! Thanks for Breaking The Chains!!

  • Dokken is still my all time favorite band.. Don is my vocal idol!! My kids love Dokken too! Their favorite song is Breaking the Chains, hehe. Its really cool to hear them sing something that I have loved so much through my lifetime. My mom loves it too, she once went to a concert and was sooo happy Don spit water on her.. Something we still tease her about. Lol!

  • He's definitly right, the kids today are listening to 80's rock, and getting more turned on it.But shit... i didnt know he had children that old!!!

  • what a cool guy. :)

  • Best part of the interview.

  • Great interview in its entirety. Glad I stumbled upon this. Admittedly, while a faithful fan of Dokken and Lynch Mob, I haven't always been sold on the genuineness of Don. This interview helped a lot. Don's a straight shooter and has certainly lived the history, the rise, the smoldering, and the re-emergence of hard rock. Great stories. Really cool. Keep rockin'! \m/ METAL\m/

  • ahahaha We don't solo's anymore,it's not cool!! Nooo you can't do solo's cuz ya can't!! LMFAO Awesome comeback Don.

  • Don, you da Man, Come visit St Augustine new Arena

    We still rock down here

  • I almost od ed on tooth and nails

  • Don rules!!!!!!!!!!

  • They don't play solos cos they can't. LOL I been saying that for fucking years nice to hear some one like Don say it though.

Time the truth was told grunge and that talentless cobain fucking suck!

  • awesome

  • lots of rock n roll wisdom

  • what's that thing on his head?

  • Grunge SUCKS! 80's Rock Rules! That's Not A Matter of Opinion- It's a matter of FACT!

  • This guy certainly needs to shoot up about 100cc of modesty.

    Yeah Don, you're bitchin'....................

  • I always like to listen to the older rock stars. They have a perspective on life that most people don't. Plus, they have a sharp sense of humor. They just crack me up!

  • ever heard the saying "missed the point" the topic was Dokken saying that grunge guitarists couldn't play solos, not if any fucker would know who they are on the street, my point being that McCready played tons of well played solos, and Jerry Cantrell as someone else pointed out, it's not a popularity contest!

  • This interview touched base on a bunch of facts...Some bands in the 80's that were lucky enough to be famous had became role models. And it was beginning to look lame when the hair bands went glam...

As for grunge music coming around and then beginning to take hold, it's true many bands playing that style didn't play a solo in most if not all the songs...It had everything to do with what they were saying in their songs.

  • You think Don Dokken has a lot of money?

  • Kudos to Don Dokken's daughter for scrapping the acute banality of N'sync and opting instead for the power and mystery of Tool. Good choice.

It's a pleasure to see our friend Don still doing what he loves for a living. Interesting stories, and nice interview. Thanks for posting!

  • It is so hard to believe so much time has gone by...seems like just yesterday we were hanging out at the golf course singing along with these bands :)

  • "Have you ever heard of Led Zeppelin?" I think his son may be retarded.

  • @eyetolduso

    You're an ignorant ass.

  • It's a good interview. He breaks the mystique of a rock star's life. He's like most rockers. For the most part they aren't very wealthy, they worked very hard. Only to come home & find they owe a record company $500k (Van Halen had the same start). I met George Lynch a few years ago, and he was just a regular guy working too hard just like the rest of us. Only a small portion made huge sums & a lot of them pissed it away.

  • that is why He still looks Young, he stayed away from heavy drugs

  • @checkurbrain

That and maybe he's wearing makeup for the camera?

  • What a great and down to earth interview. Best of luck Don!

  • don is still as cool as he was in the 80's love you don !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Fact is I never liked his studio stuff. Beast From The East came out with Lynch playing his ass off and it was killer!!! All the hits were on there and it sounded better than the original!!! Just sayin'.

  • The hair-metal guys were superiour musicians, no doubt it. But the scene had turned into a circus and someone had to bring down the bigtop. Man I miss the 80's.

  • Wow he's matured lot not the cocky stuckup prick i thought he was like 15yrs ago when he hit on my fiancee after a show and alredy ahd 2 ladies on his side.

Almost jacked him in the jaw back then.

funny thing is dunno if he was changing his voice but thought he was gay cuz he talked real feminie like a girl.

  • I played a show with Don last summer at Dakota Rock Fest. He does play arenas and large festivals. You know not of what you speak. I have photos with him and he is a great guy as long as I have known him. We first met in 1991 back in Redondo and I really am a nobody. Thanks Don for the great interview. I could listen for hours.

You'll notice my name is kprokken. This is because when I first met him he autographed something for me with Keep Rockin' w/ Don Dokken.

  • @abney20 Listen again. You totally missed his point. He's not rippin' on David Lee Roth. His point is that Van Halen brought the fun back to rock for that period. I lived it, Don's right about the cycles of music and how serious it had gotten before VH.

Aerosmith was not the Monkey's of the period. They did a lot of ballads and minor scale stuff.

I think Don is quite happy to be Don.

David Lee Roth and Gene Simmons on the other hand are two of a kind.

  • @abney20 I think you missed the point of what he is talking about. Plus, he wasn't ripping on Dave. He's just speaking facts.

  • Don, you are one of the greats!!! Nice interview!

  • LMFAO "No, you don't do solos because you can't."

So true, grunge guitarists are so damn overrated.

  • Don, you don't play arenas anymore. I had to call you out on that one, my brotha!

  • @DevelopersareEVIL Last time I saw him....which wasn't that long ago....he was playing an arena. Whitesnake too.

  • Very cool interview. Very intelligent interesting well spoken guy. Much respect to Don Dokken.

  • what a legend, an absolutely amazing individual in all aspects.

  • 1:49 you dont do solos bc ..you cant

    hahaha so true

  • Don is the real deal. He lives for the next day and can admit his past mistakes. One can really take something from this interview and put it into their own life.

  • Huge Don Dokken fan, and a great insightful interview. However I do take issue with his criticism of Gene Simmons. Gene's claim to fame extends beyond music, acting, producing and marketing to mention a few.

  • Sure, sure. Gene Simmons invented gravity, sex and music, if you listen to him (I am a huge KISS fan btw)

  • He does have an ego, but also a pretty good resume as well!!

  • its great to listen to somone who has been there n done it , experience hes been there and live through it. He seems like a great guy , prob got a big ego but who cares . Hes made some great music , n has a great voice n has written some great songs. god bless him

  • At first I thought he was talking about EVOLUTION. LOL

  • thats very true!!! the 70's and 80's music well not go away. this guy has morales very sweet calling that d bag gene simmons out .

  • if you like dokken, check out lynch/pilson album called wicked underground. has dokken sound, but contemporary sound too. singer, i think it's pilson, sound like don. wish they'd get back together, but i've heard they both can be jerks.

  • Nice interview. I always liked Dokken. Discovered them by accident, because in Canada none of my friends listened to them. I took a chance and bought some of their tapes and loved them! Great to see Don still rokken!

  • I live in Finland and none of my friends listens Dokken either. Still, i love Dokken so much.

  • Yeah me too. I saw lots of them in the Metal Edge Magazine, and that's when I decided to just check them out. Still love them too.

  • listening to Dokken on Tape brings back memories... Cassettes being big in the early 80's then CDs killed it just like that.... Dokken along with Tesla are great 80s bands.... Don and crew inspired people whether he believes it or not....

  • Protect your chicken from Dokken.

  • Yeah he looks good! If u don't know this already Don wears a wig yeah he does!

  • Don never did drugs!!!! He's my idol!!!!! Don is a good storyteller!

  • Grunge:"We dont do solos anymore, its not cool"

Don Dokken:"No, you dont do solos cuz you cant. You dont know how to play a solo"

    You get em Don!!!

  • @T00DLES213 He's an Arrogant ass,But I agree with him 1000% on the Altenative Bands Not doing Solo's ,Because they CANT,Because they Suck,There is not one Guitarist from the Alternative ERA, That made a Huge Name for themselves,Like Lynch,Halen,Wylde,etc.etc. There's not one that I know off or have heard off. That's Pathetic the Whole decade of the 90's with No Guitarist that Made a Name for there self. What a waste!

  • @chadmbedwell

    How is he being arrogant?

  • @ajhnson In this Video he's not,But he's just a Pompass Ass,Actually I Like a Few of the Things he says in this video about alternative guitar players. It's just overall he thinks his shit don't stink, and How he has put down My Fav. Guitarist of all time George Lynch. Lynch Fucking Rules. When I think of Dokken I think of Lynch,I don't think of Don,That's for Damn sure.Lynch Rules. Don Sucks.

  • @T00DLES213 best part of the interview!

  • good for him. David lee roth is still "having fun'' just for alot more money

  • I listened to them when I was 14, now I am 30+. Cool thing to see Don after some years still alive and kicking :)

  • the girl who asked if you were really 55...she's 21 and her dad is 35? um...no

  • Dokken totally rocks with the best of um. The only problem I have with them is the power struggle between Don and George. Looking back now I hope the both realize how stupid it was. George Lynch is one of the greatest guitar players that ever lived...period!!!

  • Don looks great for 55 years of age

  • Don is very candid and funny. Great interview..

  • awesome interview,i watched all 5 parts too! don is a crazy interesting dude! grunge was pretty shitty only band i liked that was labeled grunge but is more metal in my opinion is ALICE IN CHAINS!! dokken rules as well!

  • Where's his neck?

  • I don't like his interview. He's 50 years old and all ready sounds like one of those people who is bored of life. What I think is, people of today's generation still follow trends, and since when wasn't the 80's not about the music? Most of these guys are old, that is why they think the way they do. Old people are sadly the most boring people on earth these days. Except for World War II veterans are quite interesting to listen to. Dokken you disappoint me man, all this talk about kids.

  • you go on living for another 30 years honey, and then watch that interview again. i don't blame you for not getting it - how could you, but you know, we have something on you: we have been were you are now - you have yet a long way ahead to getting where we are.

Stay straight Don, you're much more fun that way!

  • "No, you don't play solos, because you can't" Finally someone said it!

  • I couldn't agree more. I was only born in 86 and most of my music collection is fromn before my time. No time for this modern crap that's not even music.

  • Amen. One comment that Don made that I don't agree with was the "bands became fun again or silly, the music was unimportant" referring to the VanHalen hair band era. I found the musicianship amazing during that time. Guitarists were wild, drummers played the hell out of a kit, singers could sing with great technique. Even production was at a new level. I think the grunge era is where musicianship went out the window.

  • Think I agree with you there. Never did see the fascination with Grunge. Music should make you feel good and I just don't see how Grunge could do that.

  • I know, right. Notice how Don says something negative about every form of music that overshadowed his form of heavy rock. His stuff is serious-we get it. That doesn't mean everything else in the 80s and 90s sucked, Don. Its like he's trying to sell a car.

That said, I'm still obsessed with listening to this interview. Great interview!

  • lol Grunge era were jealous of these guys. And they didn't even last that long. Grunge died before 1997.

  • @dtjesus101 Tell that to Jerry Cantrell of AIC..he's always solo'ed...then again AIC started off as a kind of hair band almost. The other guys in the 90s, not so much.

  • @RNRDOLL Well said, of course, like you, I've never thought of the mighty AIC as grunge. More of a hardcore rock progressive kind of band. Cantrell wrote some pretty amazing stuff and his solos were always cool.

  • @RNRDOLL Mike McCready also solos

  • @beano1eye Who the fuck is Mike McCready?

  • @FrnkEzee oh he's only the lead guitarist of a small band named Pearl Jam

  • @beano1eye Oh really? I couldn't name any of the band members of that Cover Band Called Pear Jam. Only name I can name is eddie veddor. The rest....are nameless...That's how the 90s bands are.....pretty much only the singer had a name lol.... where as in the 80s every band member , you knew who they were, and you would recogonize them on the street..if mike mcCready walked passed me on the street...i wouldnt think its just some dude going by.

  • @RNRDOLL Using a wha-wha pedal and making noise doesnt pass for a good solo

  • @dtjesus101 ---YES!! 100% agree!!

  • Great interview! I just watched all 5 parts. Don Dokken is an interesting dude. Can't believe he's already 55.

  • I just came across the first one and then watched all 5 too. Looks good for 55 though.

  • I'm glad Don loves his young fans.... seriously, I needa c dokken live again

  • Comment removed

  • lol Don said the last time I saw George he was choking me, to bad they couldn't get along, was a killer band with Lynch, but thats how things go.

  • Grunge lasted a full 3 years...lol

  • wow.... he just slammed the shit out of grunge(1:35)... AWESOME! You see... there are others out there who know grunge was shit.

  • Most grunge was mediocre..but it was something that the newest generation could claim as their own....

  • He's not into the drug thing......If I was him Cocaine wud be comin out my ears I'd do that much of it!!!

  • Why?

  • Were the DREAM WARRIORS....aint gonna dream no more:):)-::))-

  • Good way of breaking down the cycle:) Hailz to the mighty DON!!! DOKKEN IS ROCKIN!!!

  • What kind of name is listen birch? lol...

  • Love the wig Don

  • That's not a wig motherfucker. Don lives 2 houses from me. What a fucking puke.

You can't sing you can't play please

prove me wrong. I play you fuck. Wig.

    Wig this...

  • Does hair transplant make you feel better? Do you blow Don too? You know so much about him. Do you invite him over for circle jerks?

  • Dude, chill! Everyone knows Don got his hair redone for the Monsters of Rock tour. No shame in that. Tell Don hello.

  • His hair looks like a wig to you?????? NO way is that a wig! With his money I'm sure he would have transplants and a better doo!

  • Wig or hair transplant, what's the difference? Half the guys in rock & roll have done it.

  • Wig=someone elses hair or synthetic hair.....transplant=ones own hair placed where hair isn't growing! What's your point?????

  • No point at all. I make one little statement & some homo who hides behind the name dbros5150 & calls me a nigger & leaves me his phone number, jumps all over me for it. I'm white by the way, but for some reason he likes to throw that word around. It's a gay thing I guess.

  • He's so full of himself, george is better off without the jackass, I'm convinced.

  • DOn, a very talented man , too bad these kind of bands can't last for ever!

  • The only thing I have to say is that I LOVE DOKKEN ! enough said!

  • When I was growing up Dokken was #1!

now shit THINK about it when was the last time you could buy a new dokken cd . make something new! MOVE ON MAKE NEW MUSIC DON.never will enjoy the past

  • Yep, fuck the Alpha Pig deal of Gene Simmons. Geez, I Always thought that was bullshit.

    Good for Don.

  • He totally nailed the Grunge thing, "No, you don't play solos because you can't!"

  • hahahha! yeah dude. screw grunge. 80's metal forever.

  • Grunge is Garbage. As you can see, it is gone and METAL IS STILL HERE!!!

  • Well put Bro!

  • Grew up on this guy, and Lynch.

  • I am from the 80's era and listened to rock, CHR, and worked for a Country station but I never heard of Dokken until I got XM radio and they play them a lot. I say this interview on YouTube and listen to it and I admire this man for not getting into the drug scene. He is an intelligent and interesting person. Now when I hear their music, I will know more of who he is.

  • Never seen him speak...I love his music tho. He doesn't look 55 at all...it always amazes me that some of the best muscian's DON'T or DIDN'T do drugs...Steve Tyler and Joe Perry are lucky to be alive...I don't care how much bigger they are to Dokken, there music still doesn't touch Don Dokkens.

  • love that!!!so cool i just want to huge him

  • Thanks for posting all 5 segments. Very interesting to hear a real interview, instead of a canned promotional interview.

  • You know for w worn out 55 year old, he is STILL hot. And so damn talented. I love this guy. I saw he live only twice but both time were AMAZING. The voice is unbelievable.

  • Wow !! A new found respect for Don. Very cool interviews!!

  • My how times have changed! ;->

  • Excellent!

  • He seems very *real*

  • Awsom story keep rockin!!!

  • Very interesting set of interviews. I'm class of 86, bought all of Dokken's cassette's (remember those) now he talks about how things have changed, I can certainly relate. but its all good

  • I can go one better ... CASSINGLES! What a complete waste of cash those were *L* .. Wait . remember spare cash?

  • Dokken was one fo my favorite bands and I still love them today. Don is a super COOL Guy. Very level head and intelligent and had a great perspectiv eon everything. I wonder why George and him didn't get along? I am sure he wasn't always this jovial! LOL

  • Dude i love Dokken and am new to this Youtube thing. What's your fave Dokken song man?

  • I'd probably say Unchain the night or Dream Warriors.

  • I've been a Dokken fan for years and that is the best interview I have heard with Don.

  • '' We don't do solos anymore. It's not cool.''

'' No, you don't do solos anymore 'cause you can't''

That's so funny and SO true! Don Dokken is a cool guy.

    ROKKEN with DOKKEN FOREVER!!!!

  • So true. Talent went to the way-side during the grunge days. Im glad it's pretty much fizzled out. I pretty much knew it would. Totally disposable. More and more kids are getting into the stuff I grew up listening to. Now THAT'S cool. Dokken, Ratt,Halen,Dio...

  • He's so cool!

    :]

I love that story about the kid's and their folks at his concert's!

He is right! That wonderful 80's rock is coming on back :D

  • Great post. When boom box cd players came out the first thing I bought were all the Dokken cds, 4 or 5 at the time, previously I had all the cassettes. I've always wondered what Don was like since so much was written about all the internal conflicts. I tried my hand at the band thing, it truly is more about lifestyle and survival, maybe less so if you're the schooled type. But anyhow sounds like he's grown and reflective of his past.

  • Seems like a cool guy. Thanks for posting this. Saw Dokken in the 80's in Memphis with Twisted Sister and Y&T and they stole the show. Again later with Monsters of Rock in KC and awesome again. ! Love the new stuff too!

  • Have viewed all 5 parts of interview - very interesting and enjoyable.

Not only a great artist, but a genuine down to earth chap

  • Dokken just rules.....

  • Dokken are legendary!

  • don dokken....i love him..he is ma most fav singer...

  • badass, dokken. don lynch. love you guys

  • Very cool and sincere interview! Don is a cool guy forsure glad the best music is still being discovered. Those days produced some great talent that is still being discovered by our youth thanks to guitar hero and the fact that great music never dies!!

  • Great interview....just watched all 5 parts,i've been a massive fan from 1983...still am.I remember seeing Dokken opening for Accept in Belfast around 85/86,what a gig that was.Don Dokken=Legend.

  • Dokken & Accept!?

    that must have been awsome.

  • Yeah....probably one of the best gigs I ever went to...Dokken had just released Under Lock And Key.....Accept had Russian Roulette out...great times...I feel old now ,LOL.

  • I just watched all five clips straight. Very Cool Series! It was nice to see the man behind Dokken that band in the 80's that had its albums in rotation on me and my brothers' stereo when I was a kid. Thank you for posting.

  • Love your songs Don!

  • Looks like Hermosa Beach!

  • Out of all the bands to come out of the LA scene, Dokken was by far the best but underrated. I'm amazed to see how down-to-earth Don Dokken really is. Very soft spoken and sincere. He seems like a cool guy.

  • lol...i meant most people..

  • wow..thank you livinglegendsmusic...you can learn from this....read, read, read...him an ted nugent has that in coming...and they both are smarter than post people...

  • Thanks, LivingLegendMusic! I saw Dokken in 2001 at the original Fenix Underground, Seattle, shortly before the earthquake destroyed it. Don was sick that night, and Jack Russell of Great White, sang the sound check songs for Don. Don was a bit unsure about coming out for the encore, as he was sick, so I leaned way off of the balcony railing, looked at him side-stage, while extending my index finger, as to say "your #1!". He took a deep breath and came out to sing. Great interview from Don!
