hello Ian, we are making a cd of original CANADIAN ARTISTS doing their original Christmas Theme song. This cd will be sent FREE to troop folks ,Four Strong Winds is a timeless song that is all seasonal, heard it many times when truckin made me Home bound in thought and prayers
First heard this song in the '60,s when I was in Christchurch, New Zealand, as a member of Operation Deepfreeze., and it has been on my favorite list since that time. My home is just south of the Alberta border, and this great singer is indeed a Canadian treasure.
Ian Tyson's a national treasure for Canada. His body of work is big and powerful. I was lucky enough to see him live in a small venue in Calgary several years back. When he sang this tune everybody sang it. It was like he was singing the national anthem.
I'm seeking out my Canadian Legends: Marshall McLuhan, Bluenose, the Avro Arrow, Neil young...it"s a growing list and this song and this man are essential.
I believe Neil Young heard this song on the local Juke Box and spent every spare dime on playing it over and over again, and years later recorded a fine version, love this song.
I used to listen to this song in the 60's while driving a B-61 Mack for Atomic Transfer. Crossing Saskatchewan you would slow down to 45 in a head wind.
I used to listen to this song in the 60's, while driving a B-61 Mack for Atomic Transfer. Crossing the prairies you could slow down to 45 MPH with a head wind. Good to hear Ian sing again
Everybody, lets just say that country music comes from many different places
and I'm sure you would all agree that there is a shared experience (no matter where your from) for all people that are lucky enough to work on the ranch
Or even if you have never been outside of an urban area, if you like this track and it speaks to you, great!
thanks for this I remember it being sung back when I spent a summer in Toronto-brought tears to my eyes then-Alberta not home anymore but love this song
ian tyson to me is a icon in canada country and folk music ,he,s great no singer can sing four strong winds like ian , why . because him and his ex wife wrote it ., keep on singing , we will listen , leonard roberts .
This is the song of my teen years. I grew up on the Canadian/Michigan border, and my mother was born in Sarnia Ontario. Each summer, all the siblings and cousins would gather at the family's cottages in Corunna Ontario, and sing this song "100 times or more" in four-part harmony. Many thanks to my cousing Tommy who brought the song into our lives. And a special thanks to my sister Kathleen, who learned to play it before I did. And of course, the greatest thanks to Ian and Sylvia, and this song.
I first heard this song on black and white CBC TV when Ian and Sylvia sang it live in the studio standing in front of a pick up truck. The Canadian nation heard and saw that music could be about their lives and their country.
I remember hearing it played endlessly on the jukebox in a cafeteria at Falcon Lake Manitoba that next summer. Years later, I learned that the older kid with lots of coins who kept playing it was no less than Neil Young.
@Macknee1 I've grew up at Falcon Lake over the summers (mostly in the 90's) and always wish i could have experienced it in the 60/70's out there, would have been awesome. Your comment gives a bit of context, thanks!
@tipthecanoe Neil Young used to go to Falcon Lake when he was younger (like a teenager) and used to spend all of his money on the jukebox playing this song. He covered it. It's my favourite rendition.
@Sheavy722 I wonder how many people realize this story and the influence it had on Neil> This is the first time I actually played this video of Ian's song. Wow, this guy was a classic. I'll search out more of his stuff. But you gotta thank him for inspiring Neil.
Great songs like this bring rockers and non-county music listeners together and blur the lines between genres and bring us closer together. Four strong winds can blow us apart but Ian's winds blow us together. OK, enough stupid puns.
@BigOrangePred What do you mean "foreign artists" in reference to country music? Canada has a rich history of "country" music. They have more of the Rockies than the United States. This song proves that they also have gems of country music. This is about the movement of white migrant workers from both sides of the border. I really prefer Tyson's version over the nasal and twangy American versions. You should also listen to Australian (even Argentinian and Brazilian) country and cowboy music.
@BigOrangePred haha foreign the guy had just as much success in the states as he did in Canada. And this guy actually is a cowboy which im sure we cant say about to many country singers today.
@BigOrangePred Thank you Big Orange. He is a foreign country singer after all. There are a lot of good country singers around the world. But country music the way Tyson plays it in this song comes from America :-)
I went to see Ian in concert last night at Peace Fest in Peace River Alberta!! It is the second time I have seen him in past three years. What a great entertainer he is! Given the chance to see him again I would....Definitely!!!!!
this is an excellent example of some studio producer hack ruining a perfect song. the drum track is repulsive and the violin is tacky. why do they do this to good people?
Well this is the guy who wrote it. It was first recorded by the brothers four, and then by Ian Tyson and later by lots. Bobby Bare's is my favourite, though Neil Young's 1978 version is a very close second.
Well this is the guy who wrote it. It was first recorded by the brothers four, and then by Ian Tyson and later by lots. Bobby Bare's is my favourite, though Neil Young's 1978 version is a very close second.
When I heard this song in 1964, I thought about the push and pull of things ending--love, high school--old people I loved--and I looked up beautiful Alberta in books. I have since turned to the Middle East as my refuge, but hearing this song again last night really brought me back. Its so beautiful.
Four Stong Winds" came out in the early 60's, right!! Anyway, i remember a barroom of a minning town, 9my Mum ran the OLD HOTEL, and the little Juke Boxex on the walls around the room. Well on Sundays I would get to go in (to clean of course) but I also got to play this song over and over, until my Mum, Sis and Grandma would chase me out. What a song, brings back memories...I luv it():>
1962 I think, I was in grade seven in a community in Nfld. The High School was newly opened that yr. A girl in grade ten sang this in a High School Talent Show early december of 62? What a memory.
@ pervat602oak50461 and your other channel giveitallthegusto: I went to your channel site and read it. What the heck is the matter with you? Good grief. And Thanks for sharing your fantasy here, I'm sure it's all true.
nice version, gentle and moving...i wish i could hear Jim Dawson sing this just one more time, he's from the 70's and I can't find his beautiful version, either way, it's a touching and healing song to me...
I've been listening to all the version Tyson did from a teenager to this one. Each version is its own thing and despite the change in voice and range, they all work. It is just amazing. What a beautiful song. Thanks for the post!!!
This is a not great version of a wonderful song. I actually prefer the live CBC version with Sylvia, et al. I was first introduced to Ian&Sylvia in college----never heard of them before. Is there a real, original version of this? Neil Young's attempts are as lame as this one (although in a different way).
On another note, does anyone have the original "French Girl"? I play that out, no one has ever heard it before, but everyone loves it.
Can't get better than Tyson...this song was a part of me way back in the 60's....and I still sing it. He is a total legend. Thank you Canada from Texas!
Nice to hear you like this classic and great remarks about this folk legend. I live at Newfoundland where we have dozens of folks singers-our music is a blend of Irish/Celtic stuff. Have a nice day.
The great Ian Tyson wrote the Canadian west's "national" anthem: Four Strong Winds. Anybody who doesn't know this is dumber than a boot, same as anybody who doesn't recognise this as one of the greatest songs ever.
Agreed, although I've heard many say that it's an anthem nationwide, which it is not... certainly, this song tends to carry more weight with those out west as opposed to those down east.
Ians great! Like I said in another post, I just got his newest CD from hitching post supply, He's starting to sound a little old =) but still awesome he's making music!

Yes Labaron26 - why would YouTube remove it? I KNOW Ian did write this song. I was a small child and remember a lady in our front parlour in the UK, produced those lyrics, scribbled on a sheet of paper, not sure, so long ago now, but she was either Ian's mother or Sylvia's mother. She offered to send me a horse cos I'm horse mad ..lol..but my dad, George Tyson wouldn't let me might have it. I bet he thought I was so young I wouldnt look after it..lol. When I grew up and bought my own..lol
