SHES TALENTED BUT SHOULDNT BE KAIRA I LOVVE THIS BOOK AND GOTT SO EXCITED WHEN I SAW A PLAY. SHE DOESNT FIT KAIRA AND OF COURSE MOST OF ALL KAIRA IS BLACK!!!! IF IT WAS A WHITE GIRL BEING PLAYED BY A BLACK GIRL IT WOULDNT BE OK.
is kaira delenon real? if so is her songs real to like red alert ginny loved that song. i really want to hear it if it is real. someone pls answer my question plz!! tx.
Yes, you are right about Kaira's race in the book. However, Author Louis Sachar wrote the book and turned it into a play for us, and he has been part of our casting, rehearsals, and the recording of the music. The young woman playing Kaira is exceptionally talented, and her advanced musical training made her perfect in this role. We hope audiences will appreciate the power of the story and its messages about friendship and perseverance, without thinking about race.
I watched this when I went on a field trip with my sixth grade class, and it was great! Too bad my teacher wasn't able to make it because it was REALLY GOOD! The girl who played Kaira sang REALLY well. I want to watch it again!
jessybubblz, check out some of our other videos for the play. This one features Kaira singing the final ballad that ends the play, so it's a little "sweeter" than the others.
If u r comin 2 denver please tell me i'd love 2 c it. if u arent please upload a video of the performences so i can see it. i luv da book i've read it twice this year alone
Thank you for commenting. We do know that Kaira is an African-American in the book. At OCT we use color-blind casting, which means we select the best actors we can find, regardless of race. The exception is when the characters race is essential to the story. We believe that Kaira's race was not an essential element; by contrast, the fact that Armpit is African-American is important because he is treated differently by the concert security guard just because he is black.
lol I just read this book last week for my Economics class - GREAT book, wish the best for Sachar ;) If possible I'd go see it, but it's nowhere near where I live =\ Hope you guys upload a vid of the play so we can see! Good luck to all in it.

Kaira DeLeon is played by actress Elora Vilkin in this play. The songs were written specifically for this play. There are no recordings....yet!
