The intakes are far from huge, the plane it self is actually rather small too.

This is a fighter designed in the 50's, highly acclaimed and one of the most advanced in it's time, also the first complete Delta wing design.

Also one of the first to reach mach 2 and beyond.

A very unique and beautiful looking fighter jet.

@Swecan76 Actually, I saw one last year at Le Bourget. It is bigger than any Mirage and the inlets are far bigger for a much weaker engine. The Mirage IIIA was the first European fighter to reach Mach 2. The Draken is an obtrusive and ugly looking fighter and all because of those awful inlets.

I've seen the Draken many times, I was in the Swedish military, and the air force at that, so yeah, nice try.

I've seen the Draken, lansen, Viggen and JAS Gripen. Draken is fairly small and low to the ground , Viggen is much larger as an example.

The two air intakes are smaller on the Draken as in comparison to Viggen, also a single engine fighter.

I and others find it very appealing in it's aesthetics.

Also those inlets are perfectly placed for symmetry instead of placing them underneath or making one larger underneath the body.

Mirage IIIA went Mach 2.2 in May 1958 making it the first Eurojet to break Mach 2 in level flight. The Draken didn't break Mach 2 until 14 Jan, 1960.

I was referring to it being a mach 2 capable fighter, just like Mirage, it had it's maiden flight before the Mirage, not at mach 2, but the plane is and was a mach 2 plane.

Regardless, the speed is only for interception, which Draken was made for.

It had excellent rate of climb and surprisingly good at turn rate for an interceptor.

I haven't bitched about the Mirage, you seem to have a nag with Draken.

Oh man ... most Swedish kids born in the 70's have fond memories of Draken flying by overhead - the NOISE was simply amazing, windows started to rattle before you even saw the plane in the sky :) I miss it, the occasional Gripen I see nowadays just isn't the same..

AJ37 Viggen, alla versioner finns bevarade men ingen är direkt flygbar för uppvisningsflygning... för tillfället

Draken is quite loud almost deafmaking. They flew near Viborg, Denmark, the ciy where I used to live. Denmark operated two Squadrons of Saab 35XD Draken until 1993 from Karup Airbase. The ESK725 operated the fighterbomber version. And the other squaron the ESK729 oprated a RECCCE/Fighterbomber version. The plane has actually been one of the most safest jetaircraft used in the Royal Danish Airforce.
