  • Steve, I'm a heavy set man who does "high intensity" exercise such as weight training, basketball, and hip-hop dancing. I drink water after lifting weights, should a heavy set guy like myself switch to protein shakes?

  • @RapRnB4u NO! Just total your daily calorie intake and then lower it. More protein will not help with weight loss. It's total daily calories that matter and then creating a calorie deficit each day.

  • excellent...

  • bs.if u dont want calories just go with a low carbs protein shake.Protein is essential for those who workout.Plus some of them have valuable aminos-bcas in them. Its an easy fast way to establish ur nutrition demands. Not everybody build their lives around gym.And not everybody have the time to cook or eat 10 cans of tuna a week.So time is precious.Supplyments DO work.Good diet also.Combine those 2 with hard workout and there u go.

  • wait what if your trying to gain weight with muscle. im 5'9 149 lbs i usually do an hour of heavy lifting well heavy for me about 112 is the max i can do . i usually blend a vegan protein powder plus soy milk and a banana is this ok for me ?i work out at least 3-4 times a week for an hour+ every time.

  • how come when it comes to gaining mass you and scooby say you dont need to eat extra, however everywhere i read and i hhear from everyone else including bodybuilders that you have to eat more to gain more mass. I am very confused.

  • @dabul2003

the body can make protein by itself, so as long as you have sufficient protein in your diet anyway, the rest is done by your body.. the argument i think uses the logic that the more you eat, the more food is available for the body to grow and repair so that you're constantly gaining and not losing mass, but usually its in excess which makes people trying to put muscle on fast look fat. i may not be 100% but im just giving you an educated guess :P hope i helped/ made sense

  • @soldierside365 You make complete sense, I am a body builder, and when you say we want to pack on muscle fast but we look fat, well that is true because we try to eat soooooo much and try to gain the most amount of weight, but it is perfectly normal that after two three months we have a higher body fat percentage, but when cutting season comes, we lost alllll of that fat easily with nutrition and training :)

  • steve, Is it okay to drink a post workout drink like gatorade after doing an intense HIIT session at lets say 30sec sprint, 90 sec rest for 8 reps?

If yes, what would be better to drink to help with recovery :A Gatorade or a protein shake with a banana?

  • Comment removed

  • im pretty lean and skinny. my stomach is flat but not toned really, its just normal - flabby... ive been doing crunches daily for months now and have seen no result. i recently purchased some weight gain protein and have been training hard about 4 times a week for an hour each time always doing ab work included.. will i get a 6pack soon?

  • is it a good idea to have 8 oz of gatorade prior to working out.....or it doesnt matter

  • u dont need it, ur not going to die

  • IMO best post workout drink is chocalate milk

  • I'm a 27 y/o female, 5'1" 110lbs. I've been running for an hour 5.5-6 miles, 3-4 times a week for 2 months. On my off days, I do a 20min circuit training. But I wanted a post workout drinks after a run, because sometimes I don't want to eat anything, and when I finally want something to eat, I'm starving and over eat a little. I'm afraid this will lead to a binge soon. I'd think I'd be able to stomach liquid better than solids after a run. Are my workouts intense enough to drink a protein shake?

  • @fitnesschaser01 Definitely! Having some Gatorade and then eating a normal meal would probably be the best. But if you just want a protein shake make it with some type of sweetened drink like Gatorade or fruit juice. This will help replace lost glycogen and give you protein.

  • Steve I noticed that you recommend you don't have a post workout drink after working out if you are trying to lose weight, but say for eexample I'm on a 500 cal a day deficit diet and after my workouts I have 50 grams of glucose in water, 200 cals, to make up for this I have 200 cals less from food so I'm still in 500 cal deficit, will it make a difference?

  • Im 19 years old and 5"10 at 165 pounds. I Lift weights heavily mon-fri seperating each muscle group per day like chest, bis, tris, legs, etc. But i was wondering whats the general amount of calories i should consume to gain mucsle mass?. The grams per protein isnt the problem its how much of other things i should consume. Thankyou, Love your body!!!

  • @brandenrichey09 Gaining mass comes from lifting. Worry about that, not eating.

  • @BodyPerformanceTV so are you saying gaining mass has nothing to do with your calorie intake?

  • @CharlieL225 i think his talking about muscle mass not body mass

  • @CharlieL225 The amount of MUSCLE (not fat) you gain is based purely on how intensely you train. Sure,..you need sufficient calories to repair those muscles, and you will get HUNGRIER if you do need more calories. Your appetite will naturally increase.

  • @BodyPerformanceTV but all the other body builders say that getting big muscle is 90% diet.. :\

  • are you joking? muscles are built in the kitchen you moron.

  • @ihambrecht "muscles are built in the kitchen you moron" LOL LOL

  • @BodyPerformanceTV what the fcuk dude?? you can lift the whole gym and you wont gain shit unless you eat right and eat 'enough'.

  • @jugnination You don't need to eat a lot more if you work out. Just enough calories to make up for the amount spent working out. Muscle growth only happens when you're healing. He didn't say anything about gaining muscle from not keeping a healthy diet. Just that you probably don't need a post workout drink. I, personally, just cut back my calories enough so that I can have a post workout drink or meal since my appetite is maxed then and it keeps me from overeating later on.

  • @jugnination Most of his videos are made for people who are overweight. The same rules of diet don't apply to someone who needs to lose 70 lbs.

  • It's hard to realize unless you go without crappy foods for a while but, when you do you start to learn so quickly that it was the food that made you feel like not exercising. On those foods it's tough to get a positive feeling for fitness, but on whole healthy natural foods, it's even HARDER not to workout with all that energy!!!

  • please help me!

i just bought a weight gainer..

    but i'm confuse..

am i have to drink the gainer after or before workout..?

    i really need this..

    please help me mate..

    thanks..

  • @akachinoo It's the weight lifting that will give you muscles not the weight gainer. But if you're not over weight a weight gainer is fine. But you don't really need it. Just have an extra sandwich a day (or whateverfood you like.) This will do the same thing.

  • all i can say is thank god someone actuly wants to tell us the truth

  • when im in the mood to work out i work out till my muscles fail i cant phyicaly lift weights weights any more is that what you mean by realy intinse?

  • Good to hear someone talking sense at last amongst all the BS on YouTube and elsewhere. What's the deal with coffee though? I heard it should be avoided for fat loss because "it messes with your insulin" but that sounds like another old wives tale. Anyway, I like coffee - it's my only vice - so maybe moderation is okay/good? And what about Udo's oil for fat breakdown - another myth or true? Thanks - great series of videos.

  • @shardennefroider 1. Coffee has no calories 2. Actually help hydrate you! 3. Does not affect insulin 4. Has been show to help release fatty acids helping with weight loss 5. Improves mental acuity and athletic performance. If you don't already know there’s also more great info on my BlogTalkRadio show. Go there search Steve Turano. The show can also be downloaded from iTunes. The most recent shows can also be heard on my website home page (at the bottom) once they upload. Tell a friend ~Steve

  • @shardennefroider i shouldnt worry about coffee, just curb the sugar. if you want a really good alternative? green tea. about the best thing for your since the invention of water.

  • Steve whenever I have a high simple sugar drink after a work out I always get really tired about 30mins to and hour later, like today I had a coke after my workout and then need a nap about 2 hours later and I still feel a little tired.. do you think I have some insulin imbalance or something or is my blood sugar levels crashing, is this normal? Do you think some insulin imbalance or something.

  • @ZORGtheALIEN 1. Try Gatorade. 2. Have you eaten before your workout? 3. You might just be tired.

  • @BodyPerformanceTV I'd had a bowl of honey nut cornflakes about and hour before my workout. After I had the glass of coke I didn't eat anythin probably for about 3 hours, maybe I should have eaten somethin sooner. I don't know if I really need it for recovery as I could be a bit leaner lol and maybe I should let my body use fat more but I thought it may help with muscle recovery. I'll try gatorade.

  • @ZORGtheALIEN A small glass of Gatorade will be best fro recovery.

  • @BodyPerformanceTV k thanks, I'm in the UK so it may be hard getting gatorade itself, I'll try it if I can get it.

  • Steve whenever I have a high simple suger drink after a work out I always get really tired about 30mins to and hour later, like to I had a coke after my workout and then need a nap about 2 hours later and I still feel a little tired.. do you think I have some insulin imbalance or something or is my blood sugar levels crashing, is this normal? Do you think some insulin imbalance or something.

  • What should i take for recovery after a work out?

  • Good advice, but how old is that desktop computer behind you, man ha ha ? Looks like it's from 1992 - which it probably is lol

  • I've been taking a pre-work-out supplement and juss recently bought Creatine Monohydrate bottle, i take pre-work out and then C.M after, is this rite? i tend to really try work out intensly in mixing cardio N wieght lefting. Activatiing in this process does this sound right? or would it work? Because not more than a 2 week n half ago i gained extra 15 lbs then lost it quickly by my fat burning now i'm back up again! i know i'm not gaining fat cuz i would realize it lol.

  • Lol, I'm in very good shape, I am 6 foot 170 pounds. Been in the gym for two years got the abbs got the muscle look all that whatever you wanna call it. I can actually say I do drink beer and also eat whatever I want, But I keep the portions to a decent size and I have never had any kinda problems. Still got a rock hard body, so I dont think it really matters what you eat or do. Just my opinion.

  • chocolate drink

  • I have a question from my sister. she's a competing sprinter and doesn't really need that much protein, but she does need carbs. would it be a good idea for her to drink something with sugar in it b4 and after a workout?

  • @Chaaarge everyone needs protein. anyone doing that much really does

  • what if you wanna gain weight man

  • then yeah, you gotta pack on enough calories (more than you burn) to gain weight and increase recovery (through muscle hypertrophy)

  • this guy is like my loosing weigth God.Follow everything he saids and I guarrante u will lose weigth

  • Steve, what do you think about a few tea spoons of honey after a workout?

  • but what if im trying to gain weight, specifically muscle weight but some healthy fat is welcome too. im 5"11 and weigh 135

  • he loves my body

  • so in resistance training, it requires a post workout shake?

  • Theres a guy selling Kefir grains named «timelesshealth» and he as some videos explaining Kefir.

DONT BUY KEFIR from him, Kefir grains should not be comercialised, dont pay for it. Try to get them for free, there are people that can offer you some of their kefir. DO NOT give money to someone like him. Besides sending kefir by mail tends o kill the Kefir that is a living organism

  • i do cardio for an hour at med-high intensity on cardio days (75%+ my fat burning zone), and on lifting days i lift heavy for 45 minutes and do cardio for 30-45 mins. I always take a whey protein shake with 20 grams of protein and some simple carbs after my workouts, is this fine? would you consider my exercise regime to be intense?

  • your eating up your muscle dude....

  • i only use a protein shake after a tough sunday with half an hour of running and one and a half hour of taekwondo a few hours later. it helps a lot :)

  • Steve, I'm cheap and do not want to waste money on shakes. I do have creatine though and i usually take it immediately after lifting. i mix it in v8 juice and i have chicken and rice with it. i also have another meal liike 1.5 hrs later. is that good enough?

  • your lifting would be more effective if you bracket your meals....take a shake of whey isolate, creatine, glutamine, and a carb mix before and after your workout. Than have a small carb and protein whole food meal twice after traingin, a half hour and 2 and a half hours after your workout ended. And a meal of slow to moderate absorbing proteins an hour after traing. Eatting like this will maixmize your lifting and will not be turned into fat because after training your body is highly anabolic.

  • what do you specifically consider an intense workout that would call for an after workout shake...

  • intense enough to make you sweat.

  • Over an hour, and afterwords you feel sore and your energy entirely depleted. Also, if your heart rate stays high and you continue to sweat ten to twenty minutes after your workout.

  • Those ARE proteins and carbs!

  • steve, after my weight and cardio routine in the morning I eat eggs and whole grain bread, will that substitute for carbs and protein?

  • having a post workout shake is gunna be no better then slammin back some food after a workout. you look in the mirror and tell me the difference after youve tried the two. thought so. too small of a detail to make a difference. you wanna have a post workout shake go ahead. youll get the same damn results from eating some food and itll fill ya up more

  • the post workout shake will absorb alot quicker than the food, therefore being transported to your muscles faster.

  • false but true. it doesnt make a difference in hell

  • go gym shut up eat healthy eat lots and you will get bigger and stronger will i take this should i take that drink water and stay in shape the only way to get bigger is if you go gym and do a hard work out ,you want your muscles to say ,what the hell just happened, i dont want to be in that stress again i better get bigger and so they do get bigger your muscles have thoughts aswell as your brain as mad as that sounds its true :)

  • beng 200 pounds over weight is worse then taking creatine and there has been no studdies that has shown that it burns your kidneys

  • Please spare me!!......This theory was dis-proved over 12 years ago!!!.

Creatine suplementation has boosted my cardio workout out of a hole. It gave me the boost I needed to just develop. Before creatine i could jog for half a mile and would need to cool down or rest........Now i can go for 5 miles without stopping and thats a a fast pace with some inclines. I'm not on it now but it got my fitness up to a good level from what was an embarrasing level.

  • Im not too sure about creatine neither,if i want natural creatine, ill go eat red meat or fish, but i think glutamine and Branched Chain amino acids are better for recovery then creatine

  • somebody doesnt like to do research. you should probably stop eating meat all together if creatine will burn your kidneys

  • Creatine has been proven completely safe, and has NO side effects.

After a 12 week clinical trial the only side effect noted was one subject complained of a stomach ache, but that is not even proven to be due to the creatine, it was probably something he ate.

And creatine is somewhat effective, but is not the magic supplement people think it is, but along with its performance benefits it also has been shown to improve scores on cognitive evaluations.

  • there is no reason to eat 2 grams of protein per pound. Thats an excessive amount and will just be flushed or stored as fat.

  • protein doesn't store as fat ! if you take to much protein it is simply flirted out by your kidneys into your urine.

  • @doogie8480 im pretty damn sure protein isn't fat mate. they do some awesome stuff, out bodies that is but they don't work miracles.

  • are you a registered dietician, stfu

  • im trying to get whey protein but there are lots of them with different colors, shapes and size lol, so what should i look for? and i have some creatine pills should i use the creatine pills before my workout and right after my workout use whey protein? or should i use the pills and right after that use the whey protein?

  • just go to like Sams club and get the big 5 lb bag of whey protein, 77 servings, for 30 bucks. It is EAS brand, which is a reputable company.

Anything more expensive is a waste.

And dont waste your money on expensive creatine. At GNC you can get basic creatine monohydrate unflavored for 6-8 bucks for 50 servings.

Creatine monohydrate has been proven to be as good as, if not better than all the fancy stuff you will dish out the big bucks for

  • I was wondering if you coul help me get rid of that last bit of belly fat over my lower abs. I eat so healthy and workout with cardio and weights about 4-5 times a week. I just can't burn that last bit off. Can you help me out. I like all your videos by the way. thanks.

  • 1. Consistent cardio. 30 minutes 4-5 times a week. 20 mintues if you jog.

    2. No fast foods, colas, sweetened teas or drinks, juices, or alcohol.

    3. Whole grain breads, Whole grain cereals, Whole grain rices,Whole grain pasta.

    4. Mostly fish and chicken. Red meat once a week right now.

    5. When you're hungry and not sure what to eat, eat fruit. Be consistent, patient and have faith. It will happen.

  • I just get a bunch of potatoes and then i boil em mash em stick em in a stew!... TATERS!!!

  • ur funny

  • hmmm i thought you should eat after workout if you wan2 gain muscle, coz thats when your muscles need all that protein and carbs

  • You can if you want. BUT you will still grow even if you don't get your shake immediately after working out.

  • i was reading steve and iit said that if you dont have this post workout drink muscles recover by using other muscles that have stored protein with in them or something along those lines and also can you answer my other question on another page

    regards your big fan

    bishara

  • As long as you're eating enough calories during the day a post workout shake is not necessary.

  • You are very welcome.

  • Thank you very much for your input and for making this straight to the point.

  • Thanks

  • Of all the on-line 'coaches'. you are the most sensible.

I don't agree with everything you say, but then, all bodies are different. That said, any average person following your advice should get fitter.

    Keep it up.

  • you rock, man

  • Cyto Gainer works REALLY well 4 me! 580 calories per serving. i bring it to 900 calories with 2% milk and two scoops of Carbo Max with a couple scoops of peanut butter. i gained 12 lbs off this @ 3 shakes a day went from 155 to 167lbs. my goal is 175 so im almost there!

  • It will give you "extra" calories?...no!, why? because you can count it as part of your meal plan, you can be in a calorie deficit and drink a post workout shake, you just have to count calories, and have a deficit, 500 would be perfect, no more than that, and a good protein shake is 1 one scoop of protein plus a fruit, not milk or artificial sugars :S, the protein shake will make you feel full longer than a meal, and it will help you build muscle.

  • Yes, eating more frequently is better when a person is heavy. But they don't have to eat after a workout. It's a personal preference.

  • hi. i made a new plan to workout out mon chest/triceps, tues arms/shoulders, wed legs/back, thurs chest/tricep, fri off, sat chest/tricep, sun arms/shoulders. coz im 21 6ft1 and only way nearly 11 stone, which is not a lot. is my plan a good way to gain muscle, is it enough time to recover do you think, as im working diff muscles each day. i would be so grateful if you could tell me. thank you

  • Try

    M - Chest & Trieps

    T - Back & Biceps

    W - Shoulders & Legs

Thurs - off, then repeat the next 3 days. Continue this cycle.

  • thanks for reply. i dont understand, how people get so big if they only work out certain parts like once a week. surely id have to work out more often. this is more difficult then i thought.

  • each body part ones a week not fuckin twice if you train hard every time theres no need to over work your muscles coz they dont grow if you over train, chest/triceps three times a week lol fuckin hell. i bet your chest is stonger than your back

  • i did it twice or more coz thats how i thought bodybuilders did and thought thats how they got so big lol. and yea i kind of need to work on my back lol, i think i was going for image rather than strength and proportion. but i get it now. thanks lol

  • im normal size i allways have something to eat after i work out. if i dont get very dissy and nautious. you always have to eat in a few hours after when you are fat to and that adds extra calories anyway so why not straight after. i dont get it

  • gatorade and whey protein

  • NO. Gatorade is full of high fructose corn syrup. Your body can't do anything with it. It's garbage. Use water.

  • Ubustang is right. I see so many people at the gym who just lolly gag around and lift some weights here and there and expect abs in a week. Most people don't understand how intense you really need to be to see results. At the same time however, most people don't realize how far they can actually push themselves.

  • Anybody who's working out to failure, or until they cannot complete another rep, can benefit from a recovery drink. Agreed it isn't the best for some 300 pound guy who just wants to lose weight, but for a person with a healthy weight it is almost completely necessary.

If you aren't working out to exhaustion, growth will be next to nothing anyway. You need to create pain and damage in order to build up muscle. And then you need to stimulate your body with some extra energy and materials.

  • what about water?

  • you would want to have simple carbs (sugars) after activity in order to restore the glycogen that has jsut depleated.. simple carbs are also known as High GI goods...nothing wrong with eating complex carbs after exercise, but is best if simple carbs are consumed... also sports drinks contain electrolytes, which again refills the depleated stores.. protein is just to repair muscle more rapidly

  • @listentotheturbo eating complexed carbs after is much more convenient than sugar because at that point your body is resting not working. Sugar is best before a workout. Any simple carbs that are shuttled into cells so to speak and are not burned simply get stored as fat at that point.

  • Thankyou for being here! Hugs!

  • what would be qualified an intense athlete?

  • hey, you said carbs and protein mix-What kind of carbs, simple or complex- i know complex carbs are healthier for you but simple carbs peak your insulin levels alot faster which and the higher in insulin response the greater rate of muscle glycogen synthesis.?

  • I think it should be noted that some people use the post workout drink as a healthy meal replacement which is fine since those replace a higher calorie meal.

  • i agree, good point from ratava911

  • Love your body.

  • If I workout with weights for more than an hour and a half a day, and I workout 5 days a week, does that make me an average individual that does not need a post-workout drink? We need a little more clarification, Steve, as to what defines an average individual.

  • An "average athlete" is someone who moves weights around in the air and doesn't really care if he adds 20 pounds to his bench press. If you are well developed with a good base, and are serious about seeing gains, then you would not qualify as an average athlete.

    Also, I think you're overtraining.

  • Overtraining is an excuse to not workout! Unless your joints are constantly sore and your energy levels very low, you can workout all you want. You can rest when your dead. Go hard or go home!

  • agreed

  • Overtraining is a state characterized by neuromuscular fatigue and cumulative microtrauma brought on by intramuscular friction during the eccentric portions of the rep. It is a well documented scientific phenomenon which has been studied and researched repeatedly for nearly 100 years. There is almost nothing we do not know about overtraining at this point.

It is not "an excuse to not workout".

  • @Bruinpena If your muscles can't rest, they can't grow. It's as simple as that. Overtraining might make you cardiovascularly fit and possibly even ill but you will see very little muscle gain and not to mention injury.

  • My only problem with this, is that I dont know any "average athletes". I've never walked into a gym and saw anyone casually lifting weights just to "stay in shape". They're all killing themselves with 20 sets of curls off the squat rack, cuz Ronnie does it so it must work. Though I guess if there WERE any casual lifters, this might applie.

  • Good info. thanks for explaining this.

  • Is ceatin a waste of money do you think?

  • No. It does help with the reformation of ATP giving you a bit more strength and stamina.

  • what kind of Carb drink are you referring to? I take Whey Protein with all th eassorted amino acids etc mixed with water. I am trying to put on muscle mass.

  • I usually mix my protein with Gatorade or Gatorade and water.

  • Awesome. I shall never drink a 50g protien shake again!

  • Good info, Steve. Oh, and we're out here w/6" of fresh snow while you're down there toughing it out in shorts! Just ain't fair! :D

  • John - I used to live in PA and hated dealing with that weather. That's why I moved to Clearwater. My feelings go out to you!

  • Yellow t.shirt and shorts combo in the next vlog perhaps?

  • Yep. I usually film 2-3 episodes at a time.

  • i drink low fat chocolate milk all the time... it's amazing

  • and of course, trying to stay lean

  • what about if i'm training to get some muscle mass?

  • Thanks steve.. that's something i was never sure of!

  • lol short shorts ;0

  • Are you wearing SHORTS in January?!? I am so jealous!!!
