It's amazing how scientists (or at least the producer of this new scientist video) think we all know their motivations.
"Space storms can be hard to predict, so being able to observe them should help"
Help with what exactly? It's certainly not going to help predicting them because by the time you can see them there is no need to predict them, unless you are talking about future developments in a current space storm, but you really should think about what "information" you are disseminating.
@Kingslay3r Knowing about it is the first step to being able to do something about it. Studying how these storms interact with our planet let's us better understand their nature, how they move, how often they interact with our planet, and during what times. This all helps in predicting and protecting us from any really powerful storms that can cause electrical malfunctions.
incredible. This could b used 4 preparation 4 larger storms. A large enough storm could do damage 2 the american electrical grid that could take a decade 2 fix.
the problem is, when videos are posted that give too much information out over mediums such as this, they don't seem to last long as for some reason all of the original posters take them down... (hmm...) which means after seeing something like this, if you have questions, go search through the endless sea of knowledge that is available at your fingertips, and you'll start to find all sorts of frightening news, that is happening right now. Be careful though, people'll think you're crazy.
These science videos are too short for the grandeur of the news they are trying to explain. Sometimes they are more confusing then instructive......And that lady has to stop ending all her sentences in a upper tone manner....For a couple of video i thought it was a computer generated voice.
Where have you obtained the information for that to be proven as fact and what is it...? i like to know these things when told im being to told something is a fact...

yep it can, if a massive one happens which is bound to happen can cause electric failures and thus everything fails. It can even cause our technological advancement to go 20 years behind because of the loss.
No but still. If all technology got miffed there would be starvation of epic proportions. Almost all vehicles, satellites have electric components that would be frazzled. It would obliterate the logistics and production of food. Phones would die. No computers. Running water would be out.
Making new electronic components would be tough, because the means of production would be also screwed back to the middle ages.
I agree not over the last 100 years but over the life time of the earth how do we know there have not already been several "perfect storm" kind of EMPs?
Yeah, the sun is having a "rest" now. There are BIG solar storms every 11 years, when the sun's magnetic field changes. And we're now lucky to witness the Earth's magnetic field changing too,so expect some real sh1tload of heat LOL
We might die,but only "might".Depends on the power of the storms, who knows, just live ur life :p
Not only that :) In about 4-6 years, when the sun's magnetic field's changing, the storms will become way more violent and might kill half life on Earth:<
No. Although it's true that the magnetic field is currently mid-warp it's not the storms that will become more violent but the increase in interstellar radiation may decrease cloud cover causing more drastic climate change.
Its hard to say, because no one really understands these things, but it is possible that for an extended period of time there will be no protective field. Think of the sine wave in alternating current; at some point between positive and negative there is no charge.
Ok. Now, I am a big advocate of science and all the non "religious" crap. But really? What the fuck are they going on about? I mean, seriously, can you please give a little more information? It could help WHAT exactly?
i hate misleading animations, and the first animation in this video is so completely misleading that it has no place in science.
there are no grey/blue wobbly lines hitting a two-dimensional water-like surface that actually is a magnetic field in our solar system. how can a field even be two-dimensional in our reality? it makes no sense.
