  • The thing I find the most amusing is that people are still so irritated and polarized about it; have none of you heard of Andy Kaufman? This isn't the first time a professional troll has staged something on Letterman. Anyone still bent out of shape over it is just a sore loser. It's meant to jar you and get your emotions going. That's not always a bad thing.

  • wait the documentry was fake? i thought he was pretty crazy blowing coke and being completely insane. i belived it and i felt so bad for him hear because he was absolutely parinoid and strung out that must feel horrorable i bet fame could drive any one to that point defently when theres drugs involved so was it fake?

  • Yeah I heard it was all a hoax.....this is why I don't put much care or energy into what is put in the media most of it is jus BS

  • Dave even noticed he was looking upset and complimented him on his acting and how he was sad to see him leaving acting....dave has always joked around with people because that's his JOB, lighten up people

  • Guys, this is Joaquin basically in character. It's not really a joke or a hoax, more of a performance piece lol. Letterman apparently didn't know that it was a joke and tried to save the piece by cracking jokes and cutting through the awkwardness. This all lead up to a film called I'm Still Here and it was nothing more than...a performance. Letterman was not wrong, Joaquin was not wrong...it's just something done to cut through the ordinary and mundane that is life. Thank you lol.

  • @SiLlyGoOse4321 It was a hoax...jaoquin said that himself haha, but he was technically "in character" i give you that

  • I don't think Letterman's that much of a jerk, i mean he was trying to make it funny and less awkward. what's he supposed to do when Joaquin comes on and acts like a crazy drug addict??Letterman does COMEDY, learn what that is! He wasn't mean to him! He was even complimenting him.

  • i think joaquin explains himself there at the end when he takes off his sun glasses.

  • Like this is the first time it's ever been done.....the old "I'm the detached artist, so immersed in my world of unlimited creavity that I barely have time to pay attention to what's going on" bit......one of the oldest ones in the book.

  • David letterman was an asshole towards him from beginning to end....he shouldve never done the interview ......they made a complete joke out of him and why isn't his family trying to get him help with his life and drug addiction?

  • @missmonet17 its all just a hoax for JP's movie "Im still here"... he doesnt have an addiction this was just a ruse...

  • @missmonet17 did you realize this was all fake?

  • joaquin is such a badass

  • He's s0 HIGHHHHHH !!!

  • Letterman was ripping this movie in the beginning- then ripped him throughout the whole interview. Love Dave!

  • Joaquin is so talented hahahah what a badass actor.

  • This was a hoax. You can hear Phoenix thank Letterman at the end of the interview.

  • @cleancab which is explained in his next visist...

  • I saw this interview or a clip of it. I don't remember. I must have missed the end of it before, but I remember saying that the whole thing was a hoax.

  • Letterman admitted that he had no idea that it was a set up, so considering how he behaved toward potentially mentally disturbed man during the interview makes him a giant douche. Now that Phoenix came clean, Letterman is lucky not to look so bad anymore, but he's still an ass.

  • @MultiNational3Fish totally agree!

  • @MultiNational3Fish Wait. What? It's a comedy talk show. Dave is not Oprah. And he didn't come off as unstable, he came off as on drugs; People who go on comedy shows stoned out of their mind deserve what they get. Whats amazing is that 4 other Care Bears liked your comment. I suppose you pity Chrispen Glover as well, that chair deserved to be torched. I suppose you expect to see kids dying of cancer on the Jimmy Kimmel show as well. Letterman deserves a pat on the back for what he did.

  • @ColonBurns it was for a movie assclown

  • @MultiNational3Fish right im not a fan of lettermans whole condescending attitude when interviewing people.

  • @MultiNational3Fish

but ofc, letterman has been a douche since the day he started in showbiz. allthough i must say the roasting of paris hilton is a job well done.

  • @MultiNational3Fish Yeah but you dont go on the letterman show and look and act as if you just woke up.

  • @MultiNational3Fish How the hell is he an ass? Did I miss something?

  • @MultiNational3Fish Yes, because mocking a man who would go into an interview unprepared and completely derail another man's show because he is "potentially mentally disturbed" is just WRONG, right? Dave should've been respectful and polite, allowing Joaquin to make him look like a total idiot. I mean, because it was totally cool and nice to use another man's fame and TV show to get yourself media attention for some dumb fake documentary. Ugh. Think for a minute, please?

  • He reminds me of Andy Kaufman, with the love me or hate me your still talking about me kind of attitude(but that could simply be because i just finished watching man on the moon). Regardless of how crazy this whole faux-documentary thing was he's still a great actor and anyone saying "his career is ruined" might want to try searching Joaquin Phoenix letterman return. His appearance is completely back to normal, like the whole thing never happened.

  • 06:06 Life Wasted - Pearl Jam :D

  • This is hilarious. At 2:40 watch him he is trying so hard not to crack up. If you haven't seen I'm Still Here please watch this film. It is hilarious from start to end.

  • If you watch the very end, you'll hear him thank Letterman. It was obviously a set up.

  • or hes just a stoned out of his mind newbie or a great actor.

  • so obvious they were both in on it

  • @ricjuk not obvious to me

  • This is all down to Letterman just being a shit interviewer and too concerned with being funny - playing to the audience. The only questions he asked him were insulting or ridiculously flattering - I respect Joaquin for not playing to him.

  • @brighteyes3526 I respect Joaquin for doing excessive amounts of drugs

  • This is SO obvious an act / meta trolling by Mr Phoenix. He aimed for huge Hollywood success, got it, then he went a bit Marlon Brando. Brando's mind post-1954 remains tricky, but he basically saw through the bullshit facade of stage and screen acting and the industry idiots who run it. So he subverted it and extracted as much money from the greed-heads as possible.

With Mr Phoenix, he found another way out - music. Daniel Day-Lewis chose shoe-making. He turned out fine!

  • @GordonMorrice Ahahah very good analysis.. Its all wrong but still good try. This was for his documentary/film don't know what its called where he played himself going through a phase of depression

  • man i guess everyone has to be clean cut and have a good image.its alright to be a savage and not be controlled

  • LETTERMAN XD

  • Letterman tries his best to be the biggest asshole on late night tv.

  • He's not really like this during the movie, he's really angry before he goes on.

  • Have you people seen the mock-slasher movie Student Bodies,,a parody just like Scary Movie. There's a literal flashing arrow pointing to the door knob and the message DOOR UNLOCKED appears. Phoenix and Casey Affleck left a million metaphorical flashing arrows in the process of creating this joke, and nobody picked up on it. The selection process of the Hollywood audience sucks.

  • 2:40, joaquin supressing a laugh.

  • @johngabriel711

    so true. I saw that

  • Andy Kaufman was better!

  • @EternityinTransiency no, he just doesnt give a fuck.

  • @rokas15b

Or that, perhaps a little of both I would think ;D

  • Who really thinks this was a hoax? He's now spent almost 3 years of his life to this reputation, people thinking he's a complete loon. Either he really did want to rap or he's going to have the very last laugh in this whole ordeal.

  • @jaxichans He's working on another film, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, called "The Master".

  • @Jobeykobra Ya I saw that, hopefully it's good and will redeem him from this whole mess

  • This was basically him trying to pull an Andy Kauffman haha.

  • I don't think Dave is laughing and poking fun to be a dick or to make himself look good... Often, people do things like that when they're uncomfortable. And I know how damn uncomfortable I would be if I were in this situation.

  • Right before the clip, he took the gum off

  • That's how you say his name? I've been saying it wrong for years...

  • lol @ paul "that's infected"

  • we live in world where, if someone's having a hard time people laugh at them and put down their dreams....letterman's a cunt....this video makes me tear up....

  • Crispin Glover > Joaquin Phoenix

  • dr drew was so quick to diagnose him. that how they look at you. I hope you understand these people with psychiatry backgrounds are plain dangerous and no good dirt bags.

  • trolololo~~~

  • The best 11 minutes of acting I've ever seen in my life.

  • awesome

  • IF hes strung out on drugs or not, either way, BRAVO its really good

  • Tremendous actor. Amazing how long he stayed in character not just for this, but for months, everywhere he did it. Just tremendous : )

  • @kattykits he did it WAY longer than a few months, almost a few years

  • Joaquin is acting in this, he can't escape it he's such a genious.

  • At the end of the interview does I hear him telling David 'Good Job' ?

  • david is an asshole for making him feel like that he should hav

  • @71melissab Should have what?

  • @djcrunkwrench it was for a movie

  • epic

  • LARRY CHARLES!!!

  • whats up with joaquin phoenix? is he just stoned out of his mind?

  • andy kauffman rip off

  • Lol I thought he was really nervous at first before reading some if the comments down here.

  • sad

  • LMAO this is hilarious.

  • Why is letterman sucking so hard on his dick? He was a cunt to crispin glover

  • thought

  • i seen the movie, i tought it was funny

  • Has anyone actually seen "I'm still here"?

  • @CoandCaSSTB Yeah it's really kinda hard to watch.

  • Comment removed

  • im sick of everyone saying that this was planned from the beginning. It is so obvious that he was high as shit and screwed up so they came up with this "movie" idea to use as an EXCUSE as to why he was acting this way. they are pretending that it was planned from the start just so he doesnt look bad. For example, its the same principle as someone tripping and falling in public and embarrassing themselves, and getting up and saying "uhhh yeah, I meant to do that"

  • @AlCapwnage420 Look it up. It was faked. When he takes his glasses off at the end and leans over to Letterman, he was letting him know...it was a joke. Its for a movie. Look it the fuck up.

  • @AlCapwnage420 Haha! Are you serious!? You're seriously suggesting that someone took the time to make an entire movie over a movie stars fuck ups to cover it up??? Do you realize that there was speculation that it was set-up from the beginning because Casey Affleck (Director) was seen with him on numerous occasions during these "episodes". Do your research before you "call everyone out".

  • @AlCapwnage420 captain obvious is obvious.

  • would you make fun of a muslim because he had a beard?

  • @beyondbelieffan Yes.

  • maybe he just realised what terribly stupid awful cunty pointless bullshit these interview show things are.

must really suck being that fucked on stage in front of those fucking hooting morons with that smarmy prick.

  • oh my goodness he put the gum back in his mouth!!!!

  • Was Dave in on this bit?

  • He looks like the guy from the hangover.

  • He really has to shave.

  • not going to lie, i think he's pretty fucking awkwardly cute.

  • Zach Galifianakis is so funny in this interview!

  • I think my favorite part was Paul's "wa-haw-haw-haw!"

  • i dont care what anyone sais joaquin is not acting. you can see in other interviews that he is a weird guy, very nervous, and it would have been a very big coincidence that in his real life he plays the role of a guy with a nervous breakdown. i'm just saying, it makes more logic that he realy has some problems.

  • @andreidinax Um... yes, he actually is acting. This is just a facade for his latest movie called "I'm Still Here"

they used this interview in the movie. See the latest interview he did with Letterman and you'll see.

  • @andreidinax ur fuckin stupid HES ACTING FOR A MOVIE CALLED IM STILL HERE....do you not understand what that means u stupid fuck

  • @livingabortion

yes you are stupid, eat my shit

  • @livingabortion he's fucking cunting assraping fucking not fucking acting fuc

  • He grew the beard to hid his laughs.

  • Hands down one of Letterman's most entertaining interviews of all-time.

  • This vid makes David look like a huge asshole

  • @YoungRapper700 what?! why does that make him an asshole? I think it was hilarious.

  • @rykeyz No its funny and shit lol im just saying. When I first saw this I thought everything was real and not played out haha. So I felt bad for Joaquin

  • @YoungRapper700 oh okay. but even when I watched it for the first time and thought it was real, I didn't think Letterman was an ass. if one of them was an ass it would have been Phoenix for being disrespectful and chewing a gum etc. but that was an act too, so it was just pure genius ;)

  • @rykeyz agreed!

  • saw the documentary about joaquin he felt so sad after the show, he felt they were making fun of him there. his awesome :D see "im still here"

  • Andy Kaufman would have been proud.

  • @Zzyxzaa Crispin Glover, too. Though Kaufman is definitely the FATHER of late night pranks.

  • I'm glad this turned out to be an act, cause I thought he was depressed or something.

  • you can tell is was an act. he was trying not to laugh, but dave cracked him up and got a smile with the 'i wish you could have been here' line. LOL

  • Este es el verdadero Joaquin Phoenix, el de barba, el otro es el que nos está engañando a todos...!!!

  • If you think about it Joaquin didn't say anything rude. He was just being honest. David was just mad because he wouldn't dance for him.

  • Joaquin should've won an Oscar for this

  • Joaquin is the man

  • Waaken is trying so hard not to laugh

  • @jketcham How could you spell his name wrong, when it is right there in front of you? Moron.

  • letterman is good..he is really good!! he wasn´t it on the whole scam

  • probably the greatest interview on TV since Johnny Carson asked someone to move her cat so he could pet her pussy

  • Hollywood got trolled XD

  • hoax or not. in on it or not. i cant stand david letterman he is a fucking asshole. a rude arrogant self absorbed douche bag. who thinks he's funny when he's actually just treating people like shit. i hope he has a stroke. Conan, Fallon, Kimmel, and yes even Leno are much better then letterman even on there worst nights. Go to hell David.

  • @C815richard

he's a fucking comedian. how fucking stupid can you be?

  • @Glassandcandy i realize this u dumb SOB. i still find him to be a rude dumb fuck who is not at all funny. comedian or not he was very rude to Joaquin. it seemed like he was attacking him personally. so fuck you dont bother me again. u r blocked.

  • Why did they give this jerk any air time. It's a talk show!!! Just sit there Joaquin . . . don't say anything. You didn't have to go on asshole. I am sorry I watched any of your fucking movies!! PUTZ!!

  • @UpTick21 dude watch "im stil here" hee did this interview for that movie jesus man chill out haah...

  • @UpTick21 Are you fucking stupid? He was in character for his mockumentary that came out later, except no one knew at the time except him

  • If this wasn't faked, the turnaround was quite impressive. Either way, you have to hand it to him to either /act/ this well, or put himself back together after honestly being this way.

  • He's actually trying not to cry... "Watch I'm Still Here"

  • @shawtysfly you oviously didn't get the movie, it was not a documentary. He said so himself. It was planed out Letterman knew nothing. He was hoping to get a beat down from a talk show host and use it in the movie. Watch his interview a year and a half later with dave.

  • I don't fucking buy that this was faked! Too many things don't add up!

  • @mjprido your stupid he already admitted that on letterman a year and a half later

  • He grew the beard to hide the laughter

  • in my opinion david as well as the audience were a bit cruel to jp, now every single person in the studio who laughed at joaquin that night got pwned.

  • the people that think this is me is real are idiots. watch the new interview on letterman to the right >>>, he admits it was fake.

  • Dived is Dick in this interview

  • im actually in love with this man! <3

  • this is real people lol theres a film about his change it.. is.. REAL

  • @javajava ha your an idiot

  • @mrkaiser1988 The interview is not staged, but Joaquin is acting here for a mockumentary, but Letterman doesnt know so he thinks its real

  • dude had to be on something.

  • I think "tremendous" is Davids favorite word.

  • @javajava its not real he admitted it and so did casey affleck

  • To the ones who think he is acting. Just see 'im still here' its a documentary about his change and its real... Makes me feel sorrow for him.

  • @javajava "I'm Still Here" was a mockumentary, it's not real. He is acting here.

  • poor baby

  • why does he apologize to farah fawcett?

  • @jasondlane1 b/c she was considered one of his "worst" guest on his show.. And he apologizes to her b/c of this interview w/ Joaquin

  • @jasondlane1

Because it was believed that she was the craziest person who was ever on Letterman.

  • @jasondlane1 : watch Dave's interview with her

  • @Evanikus123 i dont know.. he is always a dick (letterman)

  • he is such a dick :S why even someone go on his show?

  • hahahahah!!! letterman is such an ass XD

  • someone explain to me wtf joaquin is doing and why is he trying to be andy kaufman?

  • @Magyar126 do you live in a cave or something? lol

  • at least letterman was trying to be nice to him.

  • 10:42 Joaquin says 'Good Job!' to Letterman

  • 5:34 - That was the best. "I-Is this a joke?"

  • Awesome. Joaquin is a genius. It takes discipline to stay in character like that.

  • His beard and hair is disgusting! puts me off eating for a while everytime i see it!

  • @packapunch01

Why do you think its disgusting? What makes it disgusting?

Its a normal beard and long hair for * sake.

You my friend has a weird perception on things.

  • @DeKosta It just is! in general! the way i see people in public eating with beards!! getting shit caught in them! eating the shit aswell without realizing it! and they look like pubes!... especially in this case it just doesnt suit joaquin phoenix...i cant imagine eating hair constantly! the feeling of it going down my throat! i wud say a lot of people wud hav that same perception! it looks like he is eating it in parts of the interview as well!
