@jurek323 Yeah, it was rally spec, this year it is getting a bit of an overhaul, road race suspension, lots of weight reduction and a new AMS motor. Keep an eye on their site too just punch racekern into google.

@0verdose666 I think you may be referring to the Ford Fiesta. There were two fiestas that showed up in 2009, Marcus Gronholm/ Timo Alanne was driving the one you are seeing in this vid. The other… well it crashed a few times but was driven by Andrea Eriksson/Per Ola Svensson. There is a little fiesta too the Men's Tenoras car, not nearly as fast as the 1000hp monsters!

Excellent collection of locations, I was pretty much stuck at Devil's Playground. Not a bad spot at all, but next year I think I'll sit in a dirt area - if there are any left! I missed so much of the race, having left Fort Collins at 3am and falling asleep soon after Tajima and Millen made their runs.

why are they paving more of it each year? ive never been but from what i understand the road only goes to the top and leads no where else? surely this is alot of money to spend on a road to no where!!

Well, there is a lot of traffic that goes up the road in order to see the sights. Apparently the cost to maintain the road by grading it is more (when taking into account the environmental cost and the actual cost) than paving the road.

There is a 30% reduction in power from the bottom to the top. Some of them really start to struggle when they get to the top. Most have plenty of power in order to compensate however.

Phil Layton says more on top and??? the date went to june instaed of july?? usually they will lay the top when it is way WARM...june may still be a lil cold up top. They use an additive to EXCITE the blend?? at altitude. id be surprised to see ANT NEW PAVEMENT in 2010?? perhaps they pour AFTER we run? who knows .the economy still blows etc etc...

@JoshMcGuckin : They have paved the last mile and a half. It is still dirt from Devils Playground to the last paving section. From what I've been told by the Race Director this is the last of the paving, but as you know that could change from year to year.

i notice in some of the pikes peak vids the road is paved and in some its dirt. are vids with dirt older or is the road partial pavement and part dirt?

they are working on paving it because of the abuse the road takes during the race.. its eroding the mountain so to preserve it they are paving it

I think that the damage is more pronounced from the tourist traffic, they have to scrape the brake bumps off the road fairly frequently and it is pretty rough on the mountain. It is sad for the race but probably good for the environment.
