Mullet'll get their attention too. I was in the surf, 12 feet past the tide line and several bass chased a school of mullet, with some terrified rainfish in the mix, up toward the beach then back through my legs. Two bass bumped my ankles and I nearly fell down. The look on my face must've been priceless. I switched from the Atom plug I'd been throwing, netted about three dozen mullet and fished, catching four bass that were keeper size in the space of an hour and one-half. 1994, late-October.
