Not bad at all. The sound is not too good though... This is a hell of a piece to sing, those of you that are critical, would you be able to sing it any better?

Sorry; Matthews really doesn't come up to scratch on this. Her voice sounds completely knackered with way too much air in the sound, and unfortunately, she doesn't have enough power at either end to really do justice to this incredibly refined, sculpted and wiry aria. Listen to Bartoli (a mezzo - and streets ahead) or Chilcott who was a british soprano who really did suit this role in temperament and voice... Sally should stick to Suzanna - it's far more in her character and vocal limits.
OK. I did listen to Susan's version. I did like that vey much too. I think you are a bit hard on Sally. She does have a style similar o Kiri's. You can always find someone else to compare her with. like Cecelia or Leontyne. These are very high benchmarks. As you say, the role does rather suit a mezzo.
Absolutely great singing. On the recording as it was live. I hear no air in the sound other than some dullness due to the sound of the recording, not of the singer!
This Amsterdam theatre is a big theatre with some acoustic difficulties. So I am curious how you envision Miss Bartoli sing this role here. With a microphone up her bra?
I cannot believe this voice, and in this century! Sally will be the next Kiri, if she keeps this up! She also can produce the power of singers like Angela Gheorghiu, and not make it sound fake and forced like Anna Netrebko.
I'm sorry, but Sally Matthews was a colleague of mine at music college, and I'm shocked at how much her voice has deteriorated over the years. It's as if she's been encouraged to enhance the breathiness in her sound. No matter what she's won, or that she was one of the first to be taken on by the ROH Young Artists, I can't see any real improvement in her sound. You talk rubbish - I'm no fan of Netrebko (always sharp for a start), but both she and Gheorghiu woulld sing her off the stage live.
@zuperzoprano You say there has been no improvement to her sound. that is most likely to be due to the teachers at your music college ruining her technique. I'm currently being taught by her first teacher, who gave her exactly the technique she needed. Most music colleges charge vast sums of money to ruin your voice, which is likely to be the case with Sally.
I find her rendition of Come Scoglio one of the most satisfactory among the dozens I've listened to. It's almost hard to believe this was a live performance; she's flawless, really.
this produciton is a mess.pretty blooming good singing from both though, dora and fior xx what have they got her wearing? she looks like a bag lady poor girl she is a bit of a looker in real life too xx
since I cant delete my comment I have changed my mind...she IS one of the best fiordiligi's out there..her voice is a bit of an aquired taste i guess!!
