  • 30 FUCKING YEARS AGO.

  • Oh gosh he is so perfect.

  • that Don Lane is a hottie

  • he is one of our best exports

  • tom started smoking again while filming a scene w/ iggy pop in the jaramesh film "coffee and cigarettes"

  • @MrROBCRUSOE He started smoking again before then because he can be seen smoking in the John Lurie docu/show Fishing with John from 1991.

  • when is Tom coming back to Australia,,please

  • @yiyo2008monte hopefully he'll tour bad as me. or play the blues and roots festival.

  • i wasnt that bad.the whatchamacallit of dr parnassus terry gilmore fucked by the actor dying and the attempts to do a good final edit. edit without al his scenes completed

  • @markmarktarmann it was a pretty damn good film to say the main actor died part way through. Plus it's directed by Terry Gilliam, who can do no wrong in my eyes. Three of some of my favourite people, Tom Waits, Johnny Depp, Terry Gilliam. Can't be bad.

  • @SufferinSuccotash89 i love just about everything gilliam's done. great cast, director, scri......well, they had to throw out the script for the last part i'm fairly sure. maybe you can explain it to me. cuz i couldn't follow it. gilliam's movies are great but they aren't THAT deep or

difficult to understand. the first half was good. the rest , a mess.

  • @markmarktarmann Nah I do see what you mean, the ending was got pretty sketchy. In a way I forgave that for the great visuals. I'm not sure if I can explain the end to you. I don't whether that's because I haven't seen it in ages or because I didn't get it in the first place.

  • where the fuck did he get those shoes for $14.99......

  • wow this interview is uncomfortable

  • looks calm, natural.

  • the best part of these interviews is to watch the hosts squirm and fake their way through interviews they are completely ill prepared and over their heads in..so many of these interviewers are seen for the dolts they are when they interview a genius such as waits...the genius mind surpasses them, is more calm and relaxed, more self assured

  • @bluesintheblood

I was actually embarrassed by the "friendly" clap on the cheek. Couldn't agree more about Tom's mind.

  • @bluesintheblood At that age Mr. Waits had some real issues, it isn't that he's calm he's nervous as hell here.

  • I guess that 1 dislike is from New Zealand

  • as cool as it gets

  • If anyone can find me his shoes I will give you a HAPPY FACE :)

  • @drgdrf ass

  • g'day, would love to find Meatloaf interview on Don Lane late 70s tour (Melb) performed heaven can wait. please help thanx.

  • tom looked like gigen from Lupin the third for a second there, and Don Lane looks kind of like John Kerry.

  • @muzicsalesman Tom is MASSIVE in Australia, but he doesn't come here either. When my girlfriend moved here she couldn't believe how many people loved Tom's music. I guess touring lost it's allure...

  • Comment removed

  • he didn't. he just rarely plays in america anymore cause we are idiots and don't appreciate good music. Tom is HUGE in japan.

  • It's hard to believe that once there was something of this quality on Australian TV. I only wish I'd been old enough to make it to a Tom Waits show when he still toured...

  • @apaenitentia Since when did he quit touring?

  • anyone ever been to Waitsfest?

  • at 2:28 when everyone laughing, it looks like tom thinks 'why are you laughing, that wasnt suppose to be funny', i think it is wierd that the crowd is laughing so much, and dosent really take him serious.

  • Everytime i watch this, i fall more and more in love with this man! He is wunderfull!

  • he looks akward lol its funny but i love this man! hes so amazing!!!

  • I feel like one part of him is playing to the crowd and another part of him wants to be taken seriously and really listened to.

  • Better than the first Don Lane show, that's for sure. This time neither Lane nor Waits are the worst, the audience is. STOP LAUGHING AT EVERY UTTERING!!!!!

  • Those are some sweet shoes

  • ..god he was skinny

  • As well as being a complete musical genius Tom Waits is one of the funniest men alive

  • he says unusual style at the beginning. I don't think its unusual. Its called being original and a cool motherfucker. I've just being getting into rain dogs, I'm thirty and consider myself quite musically savvy but I don't know why I've waited this long to get into this man, better late than never.

  • @itslikeframingapear Better late than never. I'm 17 and even though I've been listening to him since I was a child, I still find new facets to him. He truly is an incredible man.

  • Man, Don lane was fucking tall.

  • & it's too cute how Tom gets this huge smirk on his face when he gets caught by Don Lane! "You weren't on anything though, that was just you." *looks away with giant grin* LOL!

  • Aw he started smoking again?! Lame! Did he finally just quit altogether?! I hate that for him, I hope he kicked the habit for good. I don't see him smoking in new interviews, but I don't know.

  • He sounds like Heath Ledger's Joker. Or should I say, Heath's Joker sounds like Tom.

  • lane was a hack who loved paranormal crap

  • Tom waits came back! Great! :D

  • david17divad17; Don Lane brought the Johnny Carson style of tonight show to Australia - he copied Carson as did Letterman, O'Brien...all of them. Carson did the 'sitting behind a desk thing' changing the presenting style thjat Ed Sullivan did...the standing in front of the camera style.

If anyone copied Letterman blatantly it was Steve Vizard...anyone remember his pathetic show??? identical format even down to the 'joking with the musical director' bit.

  • tommm ! <3

  • didnt Tom start smoking again afterwards though???? cause i'm sure i've seen him with a cigarette post Swordfishtrombones..

    cheers!

  • He did.

While on his 1999 tour, he mentions about trying to light a cigarette from some kid's lighter.

  • I thought so..Hard to imagine the brilliance of Tom Waits without a cigarette :)

and to quote one of my favorite lyrics from Nighthawks:

"Trying hard to deal rationaly with my disconcerted precarious emotional situation"

    peace.

  • @Jostoc

Apparently when they were filming for Jim Jarmusch's Coffee and Cigarettes in 1993, both Waits and Iggy Pop were really unhappy with Jarmusch about having to smoke as they had both given up

  • @Jostoc check out his segment in the film "Coffee and Cigarettes" for his thoughts on what quitting cigarettes really means...

  • Check out the 'Coffee and Cigarettes' scene with Iggy Pop. They muse on the topic.. it's pretty funny.

  • thanks mistermattypies, i know the coffee and cigarettes scene..total classic :) .....and impossibly funny

i find myself quoting parts of that scene many times.

  • @jazzmanEE he was smoking thru that whole (forgettable) fantasy movie he recently made.

  • Tom is 'bout 100 times funnier than this guy.

  • the interviewers a prick.....seems like letterman took his inspiration from this guy.....talentless motherfucker with a pathetic sense of humour assuming an air of condescension.

  • Why is it that people seem to think that Don Lane is being condescending towards Tom Waits. He is obviously enamoured with him and is happy to see him again. The interplay between the two seems quite genuine especially at the end when Don says over the din of the crowd, "We'll be back in a minute Tome Waits is going to sing..." and then with almost sadness that the audience doesn't really get it, "...you'll see."

No condescension present from what I can tell.

  • I like when he's talking about how he met 14 yr. old island girl and saved her from an active volcano. "he's one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet." haha. It either took a while or the audience didn't get it...including Don.

  • I don't get it either, please explain:P

  • @aragornkid helllllz nah

  • what the..?

  • Wait, you're serious?

  • I don't get the joke, I can barely understand what he mumbles:P Please tell me, I want inXD

  • I think by "He's one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet." he is referring to the volcano. As if he spoke to the volcano and saved the girl that way.

  • I remember this so well - thousands of people phoned Channel Nine after the show to complain that Mr Waits was stoned during the interview and Lane said on the following weeks show that Waits was simply being himself.

  • This you Suz? He's acting more shy than stoned - he was fantastic in Short Cuts - not too shy to act, then!

  • sclogse1, What you say certainly has some substance; there has been a paedo ring operating in SA for decades and involved are many top lawyers, politicians, police and celebrities which is why it has never been smashed. And probably never will be. Many young men and boys have disappeared in that state...

I'm not saying Lane was involved but the activities are well known in top circles believe me! Ex-Premier Don Dunstan...enough said.

  • can you speak english?

  • I just did my research on Don and found nothing relating to your pedo comment. Your kike comment is pathetic. So much for that ambassador job.....

  • Tom Waits. Don Lane. Who knew?

  • Don Lane died today,

Poor old chap, what a legend!

  • Wow, I had no idea. Thanks for informing.

  • Tom Waits normally have few words for interviews because he spares the best ones and his voice for the absolutely great, charming music he put in our hearts... Live long for us, Tom!

  • Great interview. Don Lane loved him so much last time I think that he seems rather nervous this time around. I think he wanted to have great interview and everyone to enjoy him or maybe he was hoping for Waits to open up or something. He seemed much more reticent this time around than last time. Interesting.

  • I think Tom played Don...liked him...but wasn't a big interview on tv kinda guy. These days Tom is very open on interviews...unless you make some of the lame comments Jon Stewart did....like wanting to get drunk with him and lay in the gutter...

  • Tom Waits just a very cool artist and very sympathetic.

    Thanks for that..

  • god i wanna jump his bones

  • I'd rather engage his mind.

  • If theres one person I'd like to sit down with, and destroy a bottle of whiskey, it would be this man.

  • @itslikeframingapear More like three or four bottles of whiskey.

  • I could hope only to be half as true to myself in my life. I draw a lot of courage from this man.

  • Me too sir, me too. Just a real human, warts n all and so. fucking. cool.

  • christ he is fucking stunning in this

  • "yeah... i really give it to them.."

  • Being "low key" makes every little thing he says a hundred times more intense

  • Coolest motherfucker on the planet, hands down.

  • Thank you so much for this! Your video's

    are wonderful!

    joanie

  • "It's like giving up food."

yeah, hit that one spot on

  • Thank you. That was incredible.

  • thank you for this man, seriously

  • FANTASTICALLY awesome indeed.

  • i agree to you sir.

  • quite awesome
