  • KOMPARE!!!

  • All time fav.

  • deadly...really similar to rappers delight

  • Attention School Children: "The term Old School was overheard in the late 1940's when an Italian-American Gangster was explaining a certain Sicilian back in The Old Country (Italy) to a few other Italian-American Gangsters." That term goes back before any of the Run DMC Crew were even born...yes, even Russell.

  • THIS IS THE BEAT OF THE YEAR!

  • the days of block partys and have fun what happen

  • remember this the first time it came out

  • It was something so smooth about the early rap artists in the early 80s lol

  • When anybody ask you what Hip Hop is don't try to explain, just knock this.

  • Best stuff ever, old skol

  • whys everyone hatin on rappers from today? in 10 years all those guys gonna be old school too

  • @SuperFunkDoctor The new rappers are hated because they fuckin suck! The have no sense of style or originality. For them biting is the norm. Plus they highly influenced by homosexaul and stereotypical mannerisms. They are so removed from Hip-Hop Culture that they would think this Spoonie Gee classic isn't good. New rappers are mostly faggotts making music for 14 year old suburban white girls.

  • @SuperFunkDoctor You're an idiot. The term ''old school'' only applies to rappers before 1997.

  • @PopCulture20 wtf??ß you calling me an idoit? dude...you dont even know what old school means so better stfu...ok?

  • @PopCulture20 Why 1997? The term "new school" was used by Run DMC in 1983 for the first time for their style rendering everything before 1984 as an "old school". Since 1984 just every rapper was influenced by the techniques of the new school. So, to be as strict as you are, there is no old school rapper since 1984. Or what do you mean under the term "old/new school"? From more natural point of view - if 50cent is a new school, are the Beastie Boys also new school? I don't think so...

  • i heard this song when i was visiting alabama. there's a radio station that on Saturdays they play the olskool songs & this song came out. I liked it.

  • moby's sample for bodyrock is at: 5:28

  • Spoonie Gee was the Jay-Z of his era! LL Cool J has sighted in the past that Spoonie was an inspiration to him.

  • Spoonie G, somebody has been diggin' in dat crate :-D

  • shit is so chill

  • This has got to be one of the most sampled tracks ever! That beat/congo/bongo is hot!!

  • By the time most recent artists have done a few verses singing, Dragged out a few words and then repeated the chorus 10 times. The amount of words in this one track would have been enough to complete their whole album. And even then one verse from this would be better than anything on the album.

    Pay attention LIL 50 MAYNE.

  • @bobdigi88 Lil 50 Mayne? :-l

  • wow nice flow

  • Kool Moe Dee, Special K, LA Sunshine and Spoonie Gee. Thank you for this post!

  • i know SPOONIE GEE"s line by heart. thats y i rap 2day bcuz of him.

  • Ahh, 1980. The year of Ronald Reagan's win in the Presidential Election on Nov 4th, releases of movies like Friday the 13th, Empire Strikes Back, and Ordinary People, the win of the US Hockey team against the USSR, and the tragic murder of Jon Lennon; anyway, old school rap is awesome.

  • Comment removed

  • Old school beats crap out off today`s rap

  • @Europe1993 nothing like this anymore

    but theres always underground rap

  • Spoonie G: This muthafucka was hot as hell back in tha days. His rhymes were sick muthafuckas like Busy B was biting shit from Spoonie thats how hot he was. Spoonie G and the Treacherous 3 classic hip hop shitREAL TALK

  • hey i met him today! lol

  • Pumpkin was the 1st Hip Hop Supa Producer....

  • He was one of the best, but don't forget Arthur Baker. If it was not for him Planet Rock would have never been produced as well as a whole bunch of other old school jams.

  • @kyssdaskye Pumpkin did kill this beat tho'...I love this beat ('n Spoonie flow is like the River Nile)!!!

  • Spoonie, you tell it like it is. These wack commercial rappers could learn a thing or two from you on what a real emcee is!

  • WHat a classic!

  • This cut was dope for so many reasons. Use to love mixing the intro break back and forth and it was dope to mc to. Every crew use to spit their dopest routines to Love Rap. The flip side was dope too with the Treacherous 3 Fast rhyming. Big up to the T-connection, Stardust, Valley (Haffin)Park, Disco Fever, Harlem World, Broadway Intl, Boys club on Hoe Av, Bronx River, Extacy Garage, Savoy Manor, Gun hill PJs, Edenwald PJs, Co-op City!!! a true classic

  • kinda sounda like ol skool gogo.

  • This is when cats used to rap to live drummers in studios.

  • Back then, there was no need for a chorus or hook...It was all about rhyming skills and the continuous beat. This is one of the all time greatest hip songs ever created.

  • How Dare you? that's because you were never allowed to hang with the big boys. This song is a classic!

  • 371 e 165st..between teller and clay

  • when i read this it makes me laugh.,.u guys must b young..excuse me..wasnt around when this shit or all the ole shit was out..but u know what u all will keep it alive..peace yall..keep it going

  • Word up.LOL!!! I still have song on 8 track cassete. No where to play it. LOL!

  • It's the Godfather of Rap!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Spoonie Gee. This fellow is rappin for 5 straight minutes. Yes Yes Yall

  • The Ladies Man Spoonie Gee!!!

  • Classic BBoy shit!! Love it!!

  • The beat is cool. I haven't read it anywhere, but I'm guessing the drummer based it on Tower of Power's Squib Cakes. Too bad rap music switched over to drum machines from live bands in the early 80s. Big mistake.

  • I dunno, there's some great 80s rap produced on drum machines. `Planet rock' and `The message' to name but two. Personally, I like drum machines so long as they're not programmed to sound like `real' drummers.

  • This wasn't a drum machine, it was Pumpkin on the drums and Spoonies bro on the congas! classic beats and rhymes right there.

  • " cause I'm gonna do it , til the day I die..."

  • I'd love if Mos Def did a tribute cover of this song....

  • the purest rap of all time!!!!!, just 5 plus minutes of MCing!!!! No Chorus, No annoying hooks, just a cool cat rappin!!!!!!

  • Well said.

This beat is Ill and his voice is pure NYC smooth.

  • GREAT HIT FOR 1980!

  • Damn... I had this song on eight track cassete.

  • "From the south to the west to the east to the north..." They cover all areas.

  • okay bx-6 checking in....had a giant ass panasonic boombox with 10 batteries. Carried it everywhere 'til i got robbed!! Got my British Walkers on wit my al paka sweater. got my devil jeans with my big letter belt buckle...my kango flipped to the back and my cazal glasses...gonna' get dirty later that night near yankee station in the tunnell yards taggin' trains wit my friends...fumes are toxic. you remember? huh? do you? guess not...good ole days. peace nyc1979

  • Oh yesss!!! I remember those days well... Overlap Pants and Mock neck sweater shirts. Gray Flannel cologne. Pro Ked Royals...Goin waaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy Back!!! LOL

  • Shoot, I didn't wear Gray Flannel, I put on Brut!

  • Damn...Forgot about BRUT by Faberge. That shit would last all day...Soap on a rope too. Skin would be mad dry afterwards. LOL!!!

  • mad track

  • Wow this is brought me back some nice memories, I was a kid when this came out. Spoonie Gee's cousin Larry was the one who gave me my nickname Giggles. This is when rap was real and not that junk that is out 2day. Spoonie Gee is a true pioneer in rap music just to mention a few of the real rappers from NYC.

  • oh really giggles, you never told me that girl :)

  • dam joint is still hot=that true old school

  • REAL RAP!

  • House parties, blockparties, discos, bars, some people rode septa, some people rode in cars. It's a Philly thing to the punk rock disco boogie and swing!

  • the most recognized beat in all of hip hop

    Spoony G

  • the best drum beat ever in rap!!!!!

  • No Hook....Original Undaground classic!

  • You like that "no Hook" aspect to this song, right? Just 5 mins of rappin'! I love it!

  • That's it. Stuff nowadays is playin' out the hook way too much. i reckon it been like that for the past five years or more. i always liked this style the best. The Hook becomes formulaic.

  • yea i agree its like rap is goin to the set path of a chorus and a bridge and all the stuff that screws it up

repetition just takes up time but this is straight up new material for all 6 minutes

  • Used to drop lyrics on this beat like crazy. Crazy ups to my partner R.I.P Grand Tone of the Ghetto Rock MC's. Shouts to all the Philly DJ's and MC's from the Chilly Iceman!

  • What this is the bomb Sponnie 'Gee.... WestPhilly Girl block Party, Donkey Rope and Dope Earrings, fresh lee jeans, Fat sneakes and fat shoe laces.....Peace

  • dollar parties, pvs speakers & gemini mixers, strobe lights. name belt with the playboy sign, colored lee jeans with the permanent crease, old english 800and wild irish rose. pocket full of paint markers. philly style....

  • Colored Mock Neck shirts, Pro-Keds with 2 different color laces, Tale Lord Jeans, Devils Jeans let's not forget Sergio Valente. Silver Buddah Medalion with the Ruby jewel. Man, those were the days!!! New Ro,NY, Money Earnin' Mt.V, Boogie Down Stand Up!!!

  • you so right man!!!

don't forget those Jordache and Sassoon jeans either...
