I love you Hilary as a great Violonist and a uncomperable Musician and the way you express your Soul in Music,i can only say that it ´s just the deepest cosmological Interpretation of Music,i love you as you are.
Absolutely, stunningly, advanced. Amazing understanding of this music. at her age. The sound of her violin is just divine. Well, her deep understanding not just applies to this music but extends to everything from the colour balance to the space. She is one of those people the god has chosen to let us understand the meaning of everything and life. I feel very lucky to be alive and breath on this planet where she is now and share this moment with her.
Yes, 15 years old. Most young girls at that age struggle with school and their homework. And of course wants to meet boys and party.... Nothing wrong with that.
Hilary Hahn is only 15 years old -and is performing one of the most demanding pieces written for the violin ever!
And she does it in wonderful style! It is a truly great performance!
BRAVO!!
Critics of her performance should get their best work on youtube! I know it would "make my day"!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Completely lousy playing. I think she should play in the orchestra. There is no emotion at all. The fifth note of the soloist always makes or breaks it. She breaks it. I cannot imagine how anybody can appreciate her playing. Awful.
@jayadsilva67 I find bitter twisted souls of thy sort lurk all over the Tube... always keen to disrespect what they could never do themselves... HH is gifted beyond measure.
@jayadsilva67 Are you completely stupid or are you just completely jealous?!? Hilary Hahn's playing offers perfect technicality, musicality and expression and just because she isn't going completely overboard with drama like that clown Vengerov it doesn't mean she isn't an amazing player. Think of one of the most accomplished pianists of the 20th century - Rubinstein - when was the last time he was twisting his face as if he had been stabbed in the back?
@1023george I don't care about 'faces' when I listen--I care more about FINGERS! And soul! I don't hear Vengerov's face when I'm listening to my vinyl records...
Idk, this is actually my favorite interperetation. Nobody plays it quite like her, I love how she lingers on each seventh in the latter part of the movement, and I really actually like her choice of violin, and she just really has one of the most beautiful ways of playing.... My teacher tells me that this violin concerto is really perfect for me as far as mood and expression, but I probably won't play it until my first year in college, if not later...
Hahn is too young to have experienced the ups and downs of life which are at the root this VC. Ferras had the right psyche, if one can call severe depression a blessing, but arts almost require suffering of some sort.
You are not right at all, evgeny kissin's tchaikovsky piano concerto, the one he played with karajan, is one of the greatest of all times, and we all know that tchaikovsky demands "the right psyche"
@ydraki I first knew this v.c. via Christian Ferras' recording, but the presumption that life experience is the key to the interpretation is a misguided generalisation imho. Youth has the advantage it has not quenched inspiration with cynicism and fatigue.
Granted, Hilary Hahn is one of the most gifted violinists of her generation. Precocious gift, too. But what is truly remarkable about this version is that she plays the correct rhythm in the middle section!!! This is worth listening to.
this is one of the most sweet and tragic second slow movement of classical violin repertoire all time and when I think that she's only 14 years old ..ops...it makes me shudder ...the music is truly a gift given by a superior spirit...brava Hilary
(I speak very little French, but from what I understood of your comment, I wholeheartedly agree.)
in terms of talent im sorry to put an end to the debate but christian ferras absolutely makes the most out of the interpertation of the piece! especially sibelius )being from finland the #1 suicide capital of the world and all) lol ferras makes the most depressing and real interpretation of the piece that ive heard yet and if you watch ferras' bach you will know he is an absolute technical master of the violin
Probably because Ferras indeed was very depressed and committed suicide in the end..
I agree with you, although I really like this interpretation as well. It's very close, though. And she is still so young! Probably her best is yet to come..
Nods. Her version is solid and she's a treasure no doubt, but Ferras' sound and spirit lives every time I hear this piece. His vibrato and intensity is so controlled but still so human it makes me shudder every time I hear it.
what a talented violonist !!! she is wonderful !!! honestly this is the best performance of the 'sibelius violin concerto' that i ever heard !!!! perfection and excellent interpretation !! keep it up hilary !!!
Although I like Hilary in other pieces, I think she may have been too young to play this one with enough emotional gravitas. I'm glad she has not burned out though, and she'll continue to improve.
i love people like you XD, who just slap emotion on people, oh, that didn't have emotion, that did, hilary hahn plays this better now than a lot of your precious violin legends that frankly are quite unimpressive. Over exaggerated vibrato and ballooning dynamics does NOT equal emotion, sorry to tell you, so please get off your pedestal and do not spread you false words of how young people do not play with emotion, because it is all mathematical, no matter how much you rationalize it.
Actually, I quite dislike overexaggerated vibrato and ballooning dynamics. Also, I'm not criticizing her at all, just saying that she has improved in interpretation since this young age, and that is a wonderful thing. I actually refrain from saying whether someone did or did not have emotion in playing, and this is my first time I even mentioned emotion, because I thought it was justified to note how far Hilary Hahn has come. Also, I highly disagree with music being ALL mathematical.
you can't disagree with fact, everything is a serious of numbers computed in your head, your emotion is by choice, but is your brain calculating what will sound the absolute best at a certain time with a certain sound.
This perfornance for a 19 yaers old I think is pretty good, you can't be so critical asking for maturity or great musicality....when life is just starting....
her technique hide her lack of musicality in this movement and in the whole concerto, you try to search for some motives behind the notes but you only find cold references about bow speed and fingering, guess she's different now
Some people prefer violinists who hide their inability to play technically accurately by thrashing about and shoving their bow awkwardly. I prefer violinists who can actually play the violin and make it resonate. And there's no arguing that Hilary can do that better than almost anybody out there, past or present.
Kogan, what you call "lack of musicality" I call lack of very unmusical theatrics and melodramatic playing. And what you dislike about her bow speed is what gives her a cleaner, purer tone than anybody else. Who do you think has musicality and warm playing? Kogan?
Ufff, mrmatt24 absolutely...!!!, Hilary is just a dark and little shadow of Kogan...!! and she play this marvelous concert like a robot without musicality, without nothing, No color, no passion, no phrases, NOTHING, cold.Toooooo young for play Sibelius..go and listen Ferras or Oistrakh just for example...in thouse versions you will fine EVERYTHING and above all, MUSIC.
Ferras and Oistrakh are great choices, as well. They do some things differently than Hahn, for sure. But she has a distinct tone and ability to make the violin sing that is different from theirs. Sounds like you've got the "emotional deficiency" badstringer was talking about. This is music, not musical theater.
mrmatt24, violista2266 and filarmonia30 are the same people. She blundered a couple of weeks ago by logging into her other account and commenting with her other youtube handle.
Some of the "emotinally deficient" are in fact trouble makers who are persuing a vendetta against Hahn - probably Hahn's competitors or family members of her competitors.
I see now why Hahn doesn't post her own videos. Valentina Lisitsa, her accompaniest, is dealing with similar idiots.
I agree. Although there are some moments where I can kind of "feel" her emotion, this is nothing more than a performance of technique and left-hand/right-hand mastery.
I agree, mrmatt24. Some of you have a serious emotional deficiency. Theatrics, other types histrionic behavior shouldn't be necessary to find emotional satisfaction out of a piece of music. Your ears and brain have somehow been desensitized. Too much telivision??
Well I for one am amazed by her playing here even if it isn't what I would expect from her now and find it refreshing that she didn't peak at 15 or 16 as some of her contemporaries did.
I think that HH shouldn't even bother recording slow movements of concertos. It's like you can tell she'd rather be playing the last movement at 500 mph like she always does.

I love Hilary Hahn but I just do not care for her interpretation of this concerto. She seems a bit too rigid throughout the whole thing. I am still of fan of Perlman and Sonnenberg`s recordings of this concerto. If you really want to hear passion and a heart wrenching performance that will leave you speechless, listen to Sonnenberg.
Sonnenberg has teh best recording for sure, I havnt heard Perlmans. Nadjas recording is so good just becasue of her emotion, not to mention her technical skill
Oh yes this is definitely Sonnenberg`s concerto. Perlman is my favorite violinist, but even Nadja has him beat on this one. Perlman`s is definitely worth listening to though.
For some reason, I like the exactness and the consistency of her sound on this concerto. There is integrity in her sound, especially since she is such a young girl here. It's intense and balanced. And feminine. I do also believe she understands the darkness of Sibelius very well.
omg im frozen its so beautiful!! just unbelievable that such a young person can have such a great expression!! shes so great!! - does nobody know the conductor??
