I don't like the way the movie expresses their agenda. I believe that embarrassing people in public, treating them like criminals,or imposing AMERICA's beliefs on them don't work effectively.
The shepherd even when he becomes a gentleman smells of the lamb.
I think what has motivated me is that I feel we could actually win this time. I work all the time on animal and environmental causes without seeing much change. It is discouraging at times. I also love that this work is an amends to Flipper and all the other captured marine animals over the years. I beg everyone to not lose their enthusiasm for this cause. Thank you to all of you who made this.
I wrote about this film from the perspective of the Japanese on AllLookSame, addressing all the concerns and arguments that I came across on the web.
This film's self-righteous and moral stance will only cause both sides to become more infuriated at each other and will guarantee this conflict to last forever. It is very unfortunate.
I Agree with all my heart Sheladzo and i think that for some reason they keep making it seem like its about a Movie. Its about saving our planet and its not fiction. They call it a movie but i was thinking it was a documentary ?Oh and i don't care to get a thank you,my thank you will come when Japan stops the killing and starts to protect like they and america should.
c'est formidable ce que vous avez fait: ce documentaire sauve à la fois les dauphins et les Japonais qui en mangeaient sans savoir qu'ils prenaient une dose de poison en même temps! ce film vaut son OSCAR!
People are not aware that dolphins are intelligent and self-aware. Scientists believe that their intelligenceis equal to that of most humans. Think, you are sharing your world with another intelligent species with whom you can't communicate. You try to help them - which dolphins have done time and time again - and they slaughter you and your children. Now, tell me again about respecting culture and tradition.. And while you're at it, remember that cannibalism was also a culture and tradition...
I ask that you urge the Japanese government to revoke permits that allow Japan's Fisheries Agency to continue this heinous, dangerous and illegal practice.
I also urge American leadership to ensure that the International Whaling Commission includes the proper management of dolphins and porpoises and a comprehensive plan to stop the slaughter of dolphins in Japan.
It's about saving an INCREDIBLY intelligent and self-aware species, and protecting the environment, and it's about governments not protecting their people by allowing contaminated meat into the market (a problem that exists in different forms in many if not all countries)
Japan is a island country and 70% of the land are wild woods and mountains where people can not live so from ancient time we have ate fish as a main source of proteins.
My grandmothers generation had not eaten 4 legs creature like cows before western culture have came. Because they thought it was cruel.
What people should eat or not is depends on the environment they surrounded.
Ahem, Japan didn't eat cows because it was banned and not part of their culture, 1200 years ago emperor Temmu banned the consumption of all meat other then fish, deer, and pork and this was to be eaten very sparingly. More or less Japanese tradition and culture is to be vegetarian.
@masabetty its not only what you eat, but HOW and WHY you kill it. If you watched the documentary it would be a real eye opener for you. Japanese claim that whales (most of them dont eat fish, but krill) and dolphins etc. are "stealing" all the fish from us humans and that they kill these for "vermin control" and not for food. 1st of all, we humans are depleting the fish stocks, with overfishing not them, and 2nd dolphin meat has over a 20 times more mercury than recommended for consumption(!)
People have to know a movie have strong power to brainwash people. If I had made a movie about slaughter of cows with full of splatter scene and shown it to the people who dont eat cows, I would easily can have the big power to stop eating cows. What this movie doing is nothing but violence with little knowledge of other countries and no respect for other cultures. And one thing, most Japanese don't eat dolohin.
Movies also have a strong power to alert people to issues which they were formally ignorant, as I imagine most are to the slaughter of Cetaceans.
I would agree with you about the slaughter of cows being an issue, which is adressed in other movies like Food Inc and books by Eric Schlosser, Michael Pollan and others...but that wasn't the topic of this movie!
If most Japanese don't eat dolphin, than the slaughter of the dolphins can't really be part of the culture! Let's respect that!
PS there have been MANY movies by PETA about the slaughter of cows, an what has changed are codes on humane slaughter. You wouldn't do anything, cows (pretty and all) aren't smart creatures, they unlike dolphins don't have human brain cells.
We are in 2010, a wealthy country like Japan don't need to kill dolphins to survive. What Taiji is doing is not respecting mother nature. Do you think is good to take dolphins from the wild and put them in aquariums?Do you think it's good to kill them brutally?Do you think it is still about respecting culture or traditions?I think it's a matter of respecting LIFE!
The film-makers are not all vegetarians, nor are they hypocrites. Louie eats fish...or at least did until he found out how much mercury they can contain. The message of the this film is not that all killing of animal life is wrong. Nothing of the sort was indicated. The message was that unnecessary, stupidly cruel, rapacious abuse of the natural world is not acceptable, and that each of us need to consider how we might be contributing to such atrocities.
Go OPS!! You are true heros. You have changed this world in an important way... another little nudge to the world towards respect for our fellow creatures and some environmental sanity!!
@temsp I'm pretty sure that the filmmakers would have no control over what is served at the Governor's Ball after the Oscars, thats the Academy's decision. Director Louie Psihoyos is vegetarian.
if they were truly worried about cruelty done to ALL ANIMALS, they could have boycotted the oscar, but they wouldn't have their 15 minutes of fame isnt it? Hypocrites! Are all the movie crew vegetarians?
and this argument that vegetarians can point fingers is moooot - do you know what happens to animals that LOSE THEIR HABITAT because the place where they used to live is now a SOY plantation area? The world is full with hypocrites
If you live and eat ANYTHING in some way or the other YOU'RE HARMING other animals. That's how it works, either accept it or starve to death, then you can point fingers
I actualy want to tank you,Loui,Ric and the rest of the team who remind us that we are people and make us thinking more often abou things we can change and not all the humanity is a disaster on Earth.Your next movie should be for the Elephants killing in the savannah wich is a problem from long time ago and never has been resolved. The people needed this movie.THANK YOU!!!
WHAT A MOMENT IN HISTORY FOR ALL MARINE MAMMALS IN EVERY OCEAN AND THOSE IN CAPTIVE TANKS, TOO! Thank you, OPS, Ric and all those who in any way spread the word, contributed money, prayers, or good thoughts. YOU ALL HAVE CHANGED THE MINDS & HEARTS OF MANY ---- HOORAY FOR OPS, EARTH ISLAND, RIC AND HIS TEAM. KEEP UP THE INCREDIBLE WORK.
Congrats! Saw it Live on TV! Your a giant step in the right direction. Now Make it happen and stop those killings of Dolphins, that will be the real Oscar!
Thank you for you, Louie. You have the dolphins back and millions of us have your back. Until reading your should-have-been Oscar speech, I didn't realize plankton produces half the earth's oxygen.
Congratulations on a well deserved win! I've encouraged everyone I know to educate themselves about the cost of using animals for our entertainment by watching "The Cove." Hopefully, the Oscar will inspire thousands more to watch it and make a change, too.
Bravissimo!! I am thrilled "The Cove" won the Oscar. Everyone involved in this film is so deserving of the award. Very few people truly understand just what the dolphins represent, and how they hold the space for us on this planet. May your message continue to build momentum and inspire. You have touched us all.
It brings tears to my eyes. I am so happy they received the recognition they deserve. It truly is all about the love of our world and the ocean and the beautiful inhabitants of which the dolphins/whales/japanese fishermen and my personal heroes Ric, Louie, the Oceanic Preservation Society..& all those creative and financial talents who brought it all together to move our hearts with this film to help us learn about what is happening and that we can all take a part in helping to change!!!!
Thank you for having the guts and being so daring to exposing this horrible act of murdering beautiful dolphines. This Oscar is truly means something for it is for something bigger than one person...Thank you
