The better "musician" here is the upright bass player, Andy -- a former orchestra leader who just prefers to play at Jackson Square, since the '80's; and still does today in year 2012.
perhaps the guys at your high school blowed the likes of Miles Davis....who said its no such thing as wrong notes...wrong rhythm yes...and new orleans style is sloppy ,funky, and known the world over for that...if you culturally dont dig it.....turn back to bill, carl, and andy and do you.... in new orleans this is real jazz.....rhythmic and deliberate....Big Sam...Trombone Shorty...Fred Wesley and other greats employ this style often
this guy is a street performer hack. you want to hear real jazz trombonists, frank rosolino, carl fontana, andy martin, and bill watrous..to just name a few. google them
@eabof311 Music is interpreted differently by different people you say this guy is a performer hack and I say he is a Black Jazz musician unlike the white ones you named who if you listen to them put you to sleep
this isnt jazz... im not saying that because its not a saxophone, because trombones can play pretty good jazz. but it sounds more like hes doodling around on it. its alright, i guess. live and learn, ppl.
@deathbytrombone not rich, but i am definitely white. if you went to high school band with me, you would agree with me. trombone players at my old school played shit like this just to blow in their instrument
how cann ppl diss him, if u can say he doesnt sound good yu obviouslyy dont appreciate real jazz. hes not supposed to be refined or proper its meant to sound like that
His name is Keith "Wolf" Anderson and he is one of the best. He is/was a member of the Hot 8 Brass Band. He is also seen on Spike Lee's "When the Levees Broke," Act III (they are performing in New York).
I live in memphis and go to beale street all the time, one time I saw an outstanding trombonist and was wondering why his slide didnt match the notes he was playing, well 5 min later a recorded audio tape falls out and the guy gets booed of stage.
jazz, no jazz, academic or not academic, there are literally thousands of amazing trombone players who could trump this guy in THIS STYLE any day. Hes just some street artist.... and no im not comparing him to Jack Teagarden , Bob Havens, Trummy Young etc... or stacking him up against some impossible odds. In fact I know local trombonists who can play New Orleans Hot Jazz at a way higher level technically and musically than this guy could on his best day probably.
Fuck u guys, this guy is fucking great, I love it, and thats real! This is the real deal. Not that polished shit we hear today! This is real, in the moment. This, is JAZZ!
First off, I was not talking about classical music ASSHOLE! Second, I was talking about some of the top jazz bands and performers of today. The approach of most music these days (especially music taught in some public institutions) is very academic, and consequently, the music is a reflection of that. Third, classical music wasn't always played like it is today. In many cases it was more like jazz. That "polished shit" that i'm referring to is the academic sound of playing music "correct".
I play at my middle school jazz band and I am proud to watch this video. I would give them all 10000$ if I could. It was realy funny to watch this.Wish me luck tomarrow for band practice!
I don't know what this is? somebody help me. It's chappelle show meets a practice room at a local junior high. Sorry guys I don't feel it. I don't need you to listen for applause.
@LOVEMESEXY111 New Orleans jazz is way different compared to any jazz played anywhere else in the world. New Orleans is the birth place of jazz. I agree with pianoandtrombone123, this man is playing jazz sloppy..that's the only way you can play it. I'm not judging you, but perhaps you don't have enough experience to actually tell what good jazz is? I don't know. But as far as this goes, it was pretty good.
@pianoandtrombone123 Its sayings like that give jazz music a bad name, and why people often dont have the respect for it that it deserves. Playing good jazz comes from being able to communicate what you want on coherent level that has polished vocab. that you've worked out in the wood shed.... not blowing random sloppy nonsense over some tune and then saying "Oh well I play with soul".
These guys don't just play for fun. These guys play for life, love and happiness. Years ago right where these guys are playing I am sure there were men just like these not able to read but could blow a tune that spoke 1,000 words. Artists that know nothing more than to play from the heart. That's good enough for me anyday.
hey if you guys like this check out the "Hot 8 Brass Band" they are out of New Orleans as well they are incredible, but if you follow New Orleans jazz you have prob heard of them already haha
Absolutely amazing. The man did not miss a note...it's called ghosting people. The guy has one of the brightest tones I've ever heard from a trombone player but it sounds nearly flawless in the setting. Favorited.
Interesting story. The guy in this video also plays with the Hot 8 Brass Band. I used to live in Austin, Texas. One night I saw the Canadian Brass and then later this guy playing with the Hot 8, and I decided that this trombone player was more entertaining than the $50 I paid to see the Canadian Brass.
Anyone criticizing this video doesn't know what music means. music isn't about getting a "real job", it's about just expression etc. new orleans jazz displays this better than i think any other type of genre, no music being read, just improv and letting loose. now, for those who say he's sharp, perhaps it's uh.. hot outside? seeing as how the song is summertime. also, sure, he misses some notes, don't we all? but the range is fantastic. i play trombone. i should know.
simply kold dope and live ...i lolike him and he's good.. please stop hating, and please learn how to spell disgrace before you try and use it in a grammattic sentence structure...besides you can probably learn a lot from him.. he's been playing trombone since before you were born and in fact to be clear with you, he's probably forgot more trombone than you currently use in the cornerstone of your practice..so drink a coffee cup of be quiet. thankyou
not putting air into your horn causes bad tone. his tone is fine at times a little sharp but at least he blows. before you criticize other trombone players put up a fucking video

People who leave comments with like "why dont they get a job?!" these guys dont NEED jobs. Back in the 20's when jazz was starting to arrive.. It was african americans who brought it to us. And they did exactly what those guys were just doing. Sitting on the side walk, playing some good ol improv jazz. Plus you make alot more money then you think just doing that. Great stuff.
maybe they just like playing and producing wonderful music. is it against the law to play and instrument for people? now go stick that trombone up ur ass untill i see the slide coming out of your mouth.

Well, If he played with rebirth he has to be good.
@shoegazer666: Not rude or anything, but if you think that sounded bad, you don't understand new orleans jazz. He played what he was feeling.
And I think the first part he played was from a song that rebirth plays.

That's Keith "Wolf" Anderson on trombone. He used to play in the Rebirth Brass Band. He plays with Doreen Ketchens and the Hot 8 Brass Band. He's a great trombone player.
