Well, in case you havent been watching, the KHL is stealing a lot of the Russian and European players back to USSR. IMO, that's fine because I like the NHL better when it was more Canadian/French/ USA players. Hopefully someday there will be a KHL/NHL game played. I think that there is a lot of confusions on the dates here. I thought that this game happened in January of 1976? And BTW if it did happen in 1978, its wrong because the New England Whalers of the WHA beat the Russians the year before
1972 Summit Series! Who won? The NHL is the best league in the world. How would things turn out if they had to play an 82 game schedule and then go through the grind of the playoffs. The Stanley Cup is the hardest trophy to win in all sports. When i see more Russians coming over and captaining some of these teams to win that trophy, I'll be impressed. Not these individual exhibition games using their top players. Now the NHL excluded. Still, how many Medals does Canada have in hockey?
As far as I know, Winnipeg never faced "Czechoslovakian national team", only a Czech club team called Poldi Kladno. Those jerseys seen in the vid definately aren't the ones their national team used.
But I guess the truth matters only when it suits the Jets. Sorry, but I don't like hype & misinformation.
Jets/Bobby Hull-fan, I presume? Well, you always seem to like these half-truths, don't you? Are you one of those people who think that the Jets was a better team than the Habs (which is of course a total joke to anyone who knows anything about hockey).
Yeah, everything is explained in that video, just not very informatively. Okay, Czechoslovakian ntl team and the Jets (billed as "Canada") played in the Izvestia tournament in '76 and the Jets lost. Please tell this idiot when they beat them.
some WHA teams could of beat the habs and contend for the cup, when the WHA formed with the NHL, they made a rule of bringing in only a couple of players. Gretzky said that the NHL was scared of the WHA's sucess. John Ferguson wanted an exebition game with the Jets vs the Habs because he thought they could beat them, but the NHL said n because they were scared. Maybe the NHL jets weren't very strong but think about what the WHA Jets were capable of.
They may have called them 'The Czechoslovakian National Team' in North America, but it was still a club team called Poldi Kladno (if we are talking about the game played in December 12, 1976). Check out Arthur Chidlovski's "Summit series 1974" site for information. I'm pretty sure about this.
@FischerFan OMG, I remember that game, I was there too. Awesome game the way Winnipeg fought back after a 4-0 score. Those Czechs were damn good players.
No no. Calgary and Edmonton beat the Soviet national team in '82-'83; the scores were 3-2 and 4-3, respectively. And I think Quebec Nordiques beat them also circa 1977. I don't know the Soviets' line-ups in those games, though. In this Winnipeg game, Sidelnikov, not Tretiak, was the starting goalie. And as already mentioned here, they had beaten Jets 3times previously.
However, The Hot line was certainly hot in this game, Hull got 3 goals and Nilsson 2.
Calgary or Edmonton may have beat CSKA moscow or the Soviet wings. these are both club teams not the national team. the jets are the only club team to beat the USSR National team.
The acquistion of Hedberg and Nilsson provided Hull with some players who would
really skate, instead of the typical "dump it in the corner" NHL player. Thus, this
Winnipeg team was quite different than most from North America.

"As far as I know, Winnipeg never faced "Czechoslovakian national team", only a Czech club team called Poldi Kladno."
Actually, this is incorrect. The Czechoslavakian National team toured the WHA in 1976-77.
In the game in Winnipeg, Czechoslavakia took a 4-0 lead in the 2nd period; but the Jets rallied like never before, and won the game 6-5.
I remember it well; because it was the very first hockey game I ever saw in person.

The Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames beat the Soviet National Team in the 1983 NHL Super Series. So the Jets are not the only team to to that.

Cccp was greatest national team at the moment. If this was any other game but pointles show-match they would beat jets once again.

the jets were an average club team at the time with maybe one good scoring line and playing against the soviet union national team.....not to shabby

What they don't tell you here is that the Soviet team beat the Jets 3 times in a row a few weeks earlier.
