Yeah, make sure you get your BSI out during a sniper attack. You may take a round to your scunion, but at least you'll be in uniform with the FOBBIT medics, because that's what matters. You can tell a POG medic, or MedO saying crap like that.
@hadsao We do have Self-Aid / Buddy Aid, for first line Hemorrhage control and things of that nature as well. It's a basic soldier skill to know how to apply a tourniquet and pressure dressing.
another question. i'm only 5'9 and 140 lbs. is that gunna cut it? i could put on about 20 lbs of muscle if i wanted but if i have to carry a 180 pound grunt by myself or something. i don't know am i too wimpy for this mos?
what kind of weapon can a medic carry... and i heard only RN's in civy world are allowed to be flight medics... how does that work? would a lesser educated recruit just stay at the base or on the ground with a patoon?
could someone clarify im thinking about joining for this mos. and i'm in LPN school.
yea but they dont go by it unless the white arm band with a red cross is on them then they cant shoot but thats war for you..sad but true..i hope i dont get shot as a combat medic
You have to have a slightly funny mind set to be a Medic. My grandfathers units priced them so highly during the second world war they would not shoot at the German and Italian ones. They also didn’t expect their Medics to do any of the fighting. Despite the fact that they had qualified as Marine commandoes the same as the rest of them.
@tina6581 Uhmm... actually no. Sorry to correct you, but they actually couldn't shoot at medics because it was against the Geneva Convention and therefore it was a war crime to kill a medic. Jus sayin....
While technically true, in the current theatres the enemy doesn't give a shit. Their goal is not to win a war, but to kill everyone of us. We're fucked doubly if they see our cross. If we can do it, we take actually take a weapon with us some times, because the enemy doesn't care if we're a medic or not.
@ender4978 Oh yeah, I know that. Medics are combatants so they're allowed to carry a weapon. And last time I heard, nowadays, medics don't really wear medic insignia anymore. Correct me if i'm wrong, though....
headed to basic 1 Oct and the AIT for 68W I am excited but I want to know will I get to see enough action as a medic because I would truly like to. I am also going to Airborne school and have my ranger school stamp on my file some real HooaH HooaH stuff. By doing this will I lead myself into a more"eventfull" carrer? Please send me a message with any answers you may have.
I always keep extra gloves in my pants pocket..it only takes a few seconds to grab them & put them on. My dad lost his leg in Vietnam, & when he got blood (donated by a well-intentoned soldier) he got Hepatitis C from it. Yes, when there is a lot of blood, it will get all over, but it will not get on my hands where I may have a small cut or dried cracked area for pathogens to enter. Medic, Corpsman, Doc, WHATEVER, we are all on the same team under the same flag.

tazmanjf--"BSI for my buddy and I" is the first thing a medic learns, but in the real world you can either take a few seconds to fumble around putting on gloves, or you can use those seconds to stop the bleeding which can cost the soldier his life. The go pray you didn't catch some blood borne pathogen. As you can see they washed their hands as best as possible later.
yea thats tru espesialy if your in battle and you need to get the wounded soldier out of the area rapidly, i have a ruptured ear drum i was woundering if that would not allow me to join will it matter?
the problem is not you getting a blood borne pathogen, don't forget that the wounded solider could get them as well from your dirty hands, actually he is weaker than you and he could get an infection easier from you, cause you didn't use your gloves. But still, you're right, I guess
Even as a medic, your first concern is still yourself. Then, your buddies and last the casualty. The casualty will be pumped full of anti-biotics at the next level of care before any infection or contamination can start to get stronger. He is already contaminated and will most likely develop an infection from the penetrating wound. The medic on the other hand, will have to stay behind and cover his own ass with hand washing. If he didn't act on time to prevent hemorrhage the soldier will die.

I have a wife that I came back to and a life to live, and I would not put myself at undue risk by exposing myself to HEP C or HIV.
It was too easy to have several pairs of gloves on me for myself and the Soldier assisting me.
@usarmycaptainamerica i just joined and got the 68w mos..i have a question, i asked for something non-combative, 25,35,68,74, or 94 series mos, and they gave me 68w...how safe am i going to be over seas? i am the only son, and i had to fight my mom to get her to let me join...i dont wanna dissapoint her.. :( i see where you can be in a hospital or base setting, or possibly be on the frontlines..how often were you on the frontlines?
tommyvercetti17-- I am an only son myself and have to tell you that makes no difference.
If you are active duty you may have a better chance to avoid a deployment I was active for 3 years and could not deploy even when I volunteered, as my unit was not willing to give up one of their Medics.
Your use of the word "spelt" is improper. Spelt is an ancient grain that traces its heritage back long before many wheat hybrids. The correct word you are wanting to use is "spelled" there skippy.

tommyvercetti17-- I am an only son myself and have to tell you that makes no difference.
If you are active duty you may have a better chance to avoid a deployment I was active for 3 years and could not deploy even when I volunteered, as my unit was not willing to give up one of their Medics.

@hadsao
Your use of the word "spelt" is improper. Spelt is an ancient grain that traces its heritage back long before many wheat hybrids. The correct word you are wanting to use is "spelled" there skippy.
