romans faught with all sorts of artillery, their strategy when attacking a strong enemy force was to weaken them as much as they could before assulting them. they moved close together but still keeping about 5 feet space betwen each men before slaughter, romans were great tactical fighters, not for nothing they conquered such an empire. Spartans were great soldiers, strong and couragous, but still not better than romans on the battlefield. Spartans would inflict great damage if not out smarted.
@Narciso3322 referring to the story of the 300 spartans, they marched in phalanxes, which meant they were useless if one man would fall on either side. Romans werent the idiots persians were to front asault a 300 man phalanx sitting their safe buts inside a small passage, romans instead would of kept bombarding them with arrows, catapults, ballistas etc. until the spartans if smart would of retreated, which unlikely according to the myth, or counter attack into suicide.
You are all wrong to compare Rome with Old greece. The spartains lived and died a few hundred years befor Rome was Rome. When the greek empire was in its golden age rome was just tribes. And by the time Rome was a nation the Greek empire had fallen apart. Spartains were the most powerful and advanced force in there time. But the Roman Army had tactics and advanced stratagy. In piont, both were the most powerful force for each of their times.
im sorry but spartans can easily kill romans how do you think they killed over 20,000 soldiers with 300 spartans and 10000 foot soldiers? the foot soldiers where not needed and the made 8000 retreat and the remaining spartans and leonitus remained and still killed a lot of them
@222thepunisher Because they were persians, back then the persian army consisted of conscripted farmers and slaves which not only had no training, but also had poor weapons and armor and were under the command of poor generals who were under the impression that numbers are everything, plus the fact that many of them hated their leader.
Romans had the best armor and weapons, some of the smartest generals and were well organised. 300 romans wouldn't beat 300 spartans but 1000 would.

TW series is still as fantastic in 2011 as it was in 2004. Probably the best strategy game since it's release. The Gods (with baby Jesus) introduced sodomy during this period. Hence the zest of the male characters in TW- Rome.

Technically if they made the spartans look like the Armored Hoplites but with red cloaks or what ever it would be fine.... really all they need to do is put a similar helmet to the Armored Hoplites rather than a golden pot and it would be good to go.

Its alright, but in real life, The Spartans would have had a stragety because they dont attack against big numbers. And their shields are wayy bigger meaning they wouldn't really died by the spears.
Fuck the Greeks, Macedonians are way better. There companion cav does wonders for hammer and anvil strikes and all around ravaging light/heavy infantry. :D Plus, they've got some of the biggest phalanxes, which mean on a 1 on 1 phalanx fight, the Macedonians have it made.

@1983davidmurphy You can change the unit size of all batallions in Rome Total war, except Tutorial. Follow these steps: 1. Main Menu - 2. Options 3. - Advanced Settings - 4. Unit Size - 5. Change to HUGE. 6. Enjoy.
try playing very hard you hastati rout as soon as they touch the spears lol well about 10 secs :D the best thing to do against greeks is to use cav and there cav sux
@snipes081 slow and steady keep them stick together and always go for phalanx position if u have cavalry on ur disposal hammer the enemy from back or flanks with ur cavalry while they are bizy in fighting with ur pikemen and hoplites
plz someone help me...im playing as the greeks, so when im defending against romans, if i let the computer fight automatically he always lose, so i try fighting by myself, but after i organize my units and begin the fight they dont engage!
so they make me to just leave the fight and get a draw, and they keep doing this until i pass the turn many times and they decide to engage because(i dont know why) i have much less soldiers than i had before making easier for them!

@SgtBes in the game, theres always a way to beat any army. The spartans are maybe the third best infantry unit on the game, but a cavalry charge to the rear while they are fighting just destroys them faster then you can say :"wow" XD
The Spartans are the second best, the Urbans are the best. I did a test battle with them, the Urban Cohort won. But smashing your cavalry into their rear also damages your cavalry, you might lose 20 horses on large setting in a single charge. The best way, if possible, to defeat them is to shoot at their back until they've been slaughtered, since Spartans are very slow with all the armor and can't hope to catch archers.
@Recruitsoldier yes, archers and cavalry archers rule against falanx, thats why I love Parthia on this game XD
But I consider the spartans to be the third. Of course, the urbans take the gold here, they are awesome XD but the second best infantry, and its only my opinion, its the berserkers. They are a threat to any infantry of the game, and I just love using them for head-on charges while I have someone flanking the battle line XD
Well, Berserkers are different. They don't need any upgrades to tear a unit to shreds, and they can somehow ''miss'' spears when they charge into a pike.
I don't see Red Cape donned Elite Spartans. Replace bronze armor wearing prissy girls representing Sparta above with REAL Spartans in Red and the outcome would have been less obvious. Try it and see ;p
@MrGamergg 300 was unreal it was more like 8000 spartans vs 200000 persian SLAVES, although I love the Greeks the Romans beat the Greeks and created the greatest and largest empire ever.

@1983davidmurphy You can change the unit size of all batallions in Rome Total war, except Tutorial. Follow these steps: 1. Main Menu - 2. Options 3. - Advanced Settings - 4. Unit Size - 5. Change to HUGE. 6. Enjoy.

@crazymoocow300 Well, you'll need use baits to make the pc loose the formation.
Also, hitting 2 or more hastatii units head on with spartans. You'll loose less than you imagined

try playing very hard you hastati rout as soon as they touch the spears lol well about 10 secs :D the best thing to do against greeks is to use cav and there cav sux

@snipes081 slow and steady keep them stick together and always go for phalanx position if u have cavalry on ur disposal hammer the enemy from back or flanks with ur cavalry while they are bizy in fighting with ur pikemen and hoplites

plz someone help me...im playing as the greeks, so when im defending against romans, if i let the computer fight automatically he always lose, so i try fighting by myself, but after i organize my units and begin the fight they dont engage!
so they make me to just leave the fight and get a draw, and they keep doing this until i pass the turn many times and they decide to engage because(i dont know why) i have much less soldiers than i had before making easier for them!
what should i do?

@SgtBes in the game, theres always a way to beat any army. The spartans are maybe the third best infantry unit on the game, but a cavalry charge to the rear while they are fighting just destroys them faster then you can say :"wow" XD

The Spartans are the second best, the Urbans are the best. I did a test battle with them, the Urban Cohort won. But smashing your cavalry into their rear also damages your cavalry, you might lose 20 horses on large setting in a single charge. The best way, if possible, to defeat them is to shoot at their back until they've been slaughtered, since Spartans are very slow with all the armor and can't hope to catch archers.

@Recruitsoldier yes, archers and cavalry archers rule against falanx, thats why I love Parthia on this game XD
But I consider the spartans to be the third. Of course, the urbans take the gold here, they are awesome XD but the second best infantry, and its only my opinion, its the berserkers. They are a threat to any infantry of the game, and I just love using them for head-on charges while I have someone flanking the battle line XD

Well, Berserkers are different. They don't need any upgrades to tear a unit to shreds, and they can somehow ''miss'' spears when they charge into a pike.

I don't see Red Cape donned Elite Spartans. Replace bronze armor wearing prissy girls representing Sparta above with REAL Spartans in Red and the outcome would have been less obvious. Try it and see ;p

why are you all fighting about spartans greeks, macedonians, and romans????? WE ALL KNOW DACIANS RULE!!! lol but the only reason spartans were good against the persian empire is because they had a narrow corridor where only a coulpe troops could attack!!! sparta was weak and always outnumbered...... PLUS THIS IS A GAME! like calm down.... and romans always cheated in battles and never fought them fairly ( its actually true) and macedonians didn't last too long either.
so calm down about it.
