  • This video is gold! Do you have any of him showing Bukai? Im pretty sure my sensei has trained with him at some point. My sensei was was at Yoyogi dojo from 1973 to 1987, every grade given was Morio himself, until he was appointed cheif technical advisor for Australia. He now has his own association the T.O.G.K.A. By luck (for me) he came back to england for 5 years for other reasons and I have trained with him since his return.

  • @gojuryudan Check out my other kata done by Chinen Sensei in my play list. I keep the bunkai video as my own present from Sensei.

  • All these videos of Chinen Sensei doing kata is a wonderful find .... i no longer train in goju ryu as life choices took me away from the opportunity although when i did it was in Newcastle NSW Australia and Chinen Sensei was head of the organisation and was visiting our dojo. I have started training in Karate again but goju is not available so it is a style similar to kyokushin. I continue to practice the goju kata i learned and these videos are a great help. OSU

  • @rapture18 Good luck in your training!

  • I would like to say that most Okinawan teachers do not want to be video taped, because their performance can be misunderstood, and can be taken out of context. Performing kata under various circumstances is a key towards excellence. Those still unware of the myriad ways of training, value that performance as obsolute, and has led to various comments such as the ones written here. Slow motion is mandatory training in order to accentuate tiny spec of detail. Katherine Loukopoulos

  • @LoukopoulouK So true. that is why I treasure this series that he did for me.

  • I'd like to say great kata, but to be honest I don't feel it's my place to even compliment someone of such great standing as Chinen sensei (especially considering this was filmed during the year of my birth). I would just like to say something to everyone that has nothing to say but criticism; someone once told me that practice will never make perfect, but it does make a good practitioner. So keep on practising... and perhaps your outlook on Karate will mature.

  • @TheNishido Besides being tournament masters, their lack of etiquette amazes me. I would not walk into their dojo and say the things that they have about their teachers. There has been a few exceptions ;-)

They should become more aware of Goju ryu besides touting their own accolades. Because they are small pebbles in the world of karate-do!

  • the disrespect shown on this page to Chinen Sensei is sad...to say the least...no one can just enjoy the way the kata looks anymore...they all want to put in their two cents...and everyone is hanshi these days... :(

  • @brasshandmartialarts Thank you for the courtesy. There are way too many "kata champions" in this world that have no understanding what real karate is all about. If you want to see Chinen perform a full speed kata look at the "Part 3 Chinen Kata" where he performs his favorite kata, Kururunfa, full speed. Very cool. Bethany says below that she has "mastered" her tournament kata. Hell I no longer do kata and after 38 years of training am trying to get my bow & seiken tsuki correct !!

  • @NewEnglandBudo

Chinen Sensei is a masters master, in my opinion...Bethany, is more or so like a 'youtube veteran'...

I been doing Kata for maybe 15 years, I am still trying to focus on menske..haha

  • @NewEnglandBudo: Hi, Sensei, I see that 1992gdog has made some ignorant comments. Respectfully, try to be patient and forgive him. He's a child, and as such his behavior is much like when a child wets his or her own pants in public; it's best not to stare or make much fuss. Eventually the discomfort caused will teach the child not to do so, hopefully before too many outfits are ruined :) .

  • @NMCK69 LOL, I checked out bethanyc333 page to see her Seyunchin that won her a first place in a tournament. So Sad.

  • What Jim (NewEnglandBudo) said. This is a training video, meant to show form and suggest bunkai. It's not a performance video.

Speaking as someone who has trained in goju-ryu for over 30 years, Chinen's form was superb. I say this even though I do a different version of seipai.

  • I did not like this kata at all. There was no pacing what-so-ever. Where are the killing blows? It was missing so much. Very unimpressed.

  • thank you I agree, even though i was told to google this guy it doesnt make a difference its a bad kata

  • If you have to google "this guy"...you already show where you are in Goju-Ryu or Karate in general.

  • maybe hes just known for goju ryu have i never heard of this guy at all so you can shove it.

  • What you are seeing is Chinen performing the kata at a slow speed so that we could use it as a reference while we were transitioning to his association. Bethany, I watched your version of Seyunchin on your page and could readily point out dozens of errors.

  • Oh please do! I love criticism. If I lose - or come even in second place - with Seyunchin ever, I'll let you know.

  • Someone obviously doesn't understand Okinawan Karate, meaning, form, purpose, etc...Let me know when you come in 2nd place in the street and I'll send flowers. You simply do not understand what you are looking at, the real purpose of or original reason for what you do for plastic trophies.

  • AS I can tell by your back ground that you are fat and old you should not talk. I also hope you dont put on tournaments because what u said to Bethany is bullshit. IF, you have put on a tournament then you have supported the fact that we should compete for karate. You fat and old give it up. I do believe that in a street fight you would come in second place for sure. You just not fit enough. Ive already have a box of flowers for you.

  • I wonder what your sensei would think about the way you have acted on this page? Between the 3 folks that have tried to educate you in Okinawan Goju we have almost 100 years of practice by some of the best Goju ryu karate Sensei in the world.

Sadly, your lackluster performance of Seyunchin on your page and your "1st place" is only as good as those u compete against. Once again, your lack of reigi or etiquette tends to show your lack of practice and belies you age.

  • yawn boring

  • I thought the purpose of competing was to demonstrate your knowledge of the movements in the kata. To show that you have mastered them, and can successfully complete the forms when it comes to an "under pressure" situation. I've won all over North America with my katas, and my sparring matches. I'd like to give your slow ass a go.

  • @bethanyc333 are you joking? I have seen your kata video and you are not even in the same universe as Chinen! You really should have looked up who he is before making this comment...you just made yourself look very, very stupid! O and if you are winning tournaments with that effort, I could come over their and clean up!

  • @bethanyc333 - "I'd like to give your slow ass a go." LOL!!! If you were referring to Chinen Sensei as "slow ass", you were sinfully mistaking. You are a joke. LOL!!! Such ignorance.

  • ok i will do

  • not very good

  • In who's world? Chinen is one of the major Goju Ryu teachers in the world. Perhaps you are not used to seeing this kata done slowly with the proper timing and focus. I also see that your age may be clouding your judgment!

  • Ok I am sorry if I offended you but I see some mayor stances that in my eyes are wrong. When you do your horse stance your butt does not pass your knees it is wrong if you do. My age has nothing to do with the art itself. I do practice sepia in different speed, I just see someone that could perfect their kata even more. So in my eyes this is not good kata because stances are key to a good kata. I think you are judging me on my age but I do have a lot of experience thank you.

  • I can see that you are a young person that has not been taught the difference traditional Okinawan kata and today's tournament kata. When you lower your stance in the double downward strike he is showing the bunkai application. Do some background on him and you will be surprised by how highly thought of he is in the Goju Ryu community.

  • ok will do

  • Thank U:-). Movements excelently defined!

  • Movements are very clearly.

  • respect.

  • Wow. I love the way Sensei flows in his kata. The Muchimi aspect is so very strong in the kata from this linage. Thank you for sharing this!

  • Yes, this is the true version of Okinawa Seipai
