I loved that show and my father hated it - one of the few TV shows we disagreed on. Reminds me of those days long gone by when we'd watch Chet Huntley and David Brinkley after dinner each evening.
Wow, this video sure does bring back memories. I grew up watching television shows like this one with my frozen Swanson's TV Dinner and Jiffy Pop Popcorn. The shows today are so very different. In the past, the shows were a means of escape, now they are in your face real. I prefer the escape from reality.
Doris Day was a Beautiful woman. Not like these bare legged Pudgy Pachyderms muffin topping over their jeans sporting tattoos and flip flops you see today.Yeeech!!
@Bubsy812 Agreed. But that is a product of a very permissive "i'm okay you're okay everyone is beautiful and wonderful and smart" society that exists today. I am actually talking about tv mainly.
I love this beginning! Like Archie said to Mrs. Jefferson on that "All in the Family: "What did you think of the Julia show last night?" and she replied to Archie: "Fine...how was Doris Day?" In my Mom's house, both Julia AND Doris Day played! I loved (was obsessed) with those 3 FAST AS HELL zooms on Doris' angelic face! That spiral staircase was amazing; I'd never seen anything like it when I was 5. Being a San Fran suburbs child in 1970, I did, however, know that Golden Gate!
@RichHartley1966 I loved the "Julia" show, too, and wanted a Julia doll so much! (I was not-quite-white & was sick of the blonde blue eyed dolls) I loved all those sitcoms & the Doris Day theme song brings a lot back! Lucky you, in SF. I was marooned in Ohio. :)

Doris herself had a hand in "revamping" the series, 'silver'. She really didn't want the setting to be "the family farm" after the first season, and gradually "fine-tuned" it to the point where, by 1971, "Doris Martin" was a single woman living in a "chic" San Francisco apartment {"if Mary Tyler Moore can do it, so can I!"}- and a "clothes horse". The brief "fashion show" at :40, during the opening credits, stressed Doris' intentions of being as glamorous as she looked in her feature films.
I know some people liked the earlier seasons, but at that time CBS was going thru a makeover getting rid of all the "rural shows" I read somewhere thats why they needed to retool this show , after all this was the time Mary Tyler Moore's show came out as well as All In The Family , so CBS was headed in a different direction.
From a male perspective, it's never talked about just how insanely sexy she was - and I'm talking at the age she was right here in this opening ... and, I'll go on to say I think she was even sexier here than in all her previous films... good lord, were she dressed in that red had or that ski-outfit (the last on with the white top and belt) I'd have chased her all over that apartment - up and down those stairs.
I agree, Doris Day was at her sexiest and most appealing in her forties (not unlike Angie Dickinson), and she looks great in that ski ensemble --proving that there were some good fashions in the 1970s after all!
I just wish someone would upload Doris posing in that yellow-and-white bikini from the Season 5 "Hospital Benefit" episode. She had a gorgeous body and she was nearly 50 then.
HEAR-HEAR!! I saw only a picture/image online of her in that bikini and OMG!!! Somebody - ANYBODY, please - donate to the perv-obssessed!!! Just that one scene is all I ask!!!
Well, it's pretty hard to make San Francisco look ugly -- except when you see all those fat, out-of-shape people walking around half naked at the Folsom Street Fair!
I remember this show. I loved her apartment in San Fran and wanted one just like it when I grew up. I'm sure an apartment like it would be 5 grand a month in SF now.
I loved the Doris Day Show...Bought seasons 1, 2, and 3 on DVD! But S4 & S5 weren't my favorites....I missed her family, Rose Marie, McLean and Mr. Harvey. Season 4 & 5 were okay but S1, 2 and 3 were great!!!!

As good as Maclean Stevenson was as Doris's boss John Dehner was a great replacement for him.
