Wow, my first NES game, I remember this game for its awesome music mainly, 20 years on and it still measures up to the test of time superbly. Astonishing what they managed to get out of the ol' 8-bit
to be honest... my generation were spoiled when it comes to music in games..
todays kids dont get good music like this in games :(
when i hear this, i actually get a tear in my eye when i hear this ... reminds me of a time that never will come back, and also that i have grown up with this ^^ NES forever... forever gamer <3
This is one of my *all time* favorite NES games. God I loved this. Once you got the controls and general rhythm down, this game was fantastic. Such incredible music...such incredible memories...
@vjnctn So true..but LJN was better..LOL..just playin..haha..sunsoft kicked ass..oh man the memories..being a kid..there are to many games to mention!
even while Genesis was out, certain composers were still doing amazing things with the NES's sound chip, and bringing in some tricks C64's sound chip popularized. but the Gen basically has the NES's sound chip onboard alongside the metallic Yamaha chip. the best-sounding games combined both chips for music. like in Gunstar Heroes, a lot of the soundtrack's instruments use the NES-type chip for really wild things, added to the newer Yamaha tones.
Exactly. The license was given to Bethesda Softworks who were actually behind every game based on the first Terminator movie. It was a shame that Sunsoft their license and if they haven't this was going to be popular video game, along with the first Batman game on NES. Not to mention, the Sunsoft games on the NES were generally hit or miss.
And the same thing happened with Sunsoft and the license for Superman, and as a result we have a not-released-but-fully-done prototype of Sunman and a horrible Superman game for the NES done by Kemco.
Sunsoft had a talent for making the old NES sound good. The hilarious thing is that even with the NES's audio capabilities falling fall short of the Genesis, this game made a lot of the 16 bit stuff at the time sound pathetic. I just wish that other companies thought about the sound in their games like Sunsoft did. With games like Silius, Batman, Batman return of the Joker etc, that company showed that the old 8-bit console could rock hard if it was allowed to.
@JoelJW a LOT of 8bit games give the genesis sound chip a run for it's money. it could synthesize better but everything on the Genesis had that really gross "metallic"y sound.
Man i remember this game, My brother and i have been into video games since we were about 3 and 4 yrs old, and i remember when we were moving we had about 78 cartridges in a box and 2 systems, and we left it out for a few minutes, and someone stole it. :(
I actually find this game easier now than I did when I was a kid. Just replayed it last year and completed it on my first try, without the extra continues code.
The badass soundtrack alone was motivation enough to run through it again.
Count me as one of the unlucky people who never had a chance to play this game. Looks awesome.
I can see the similarities with the Terminator series. It's crazy to think that the NES Terminator games might have actually been awesome instead of the crap games that they are.
this was supposed to be the original terminator game but the rights were revoked at the last minute because the game was too good. They had to drastically alter the plot to sell it but the similarities to the movie are still there if you know to look.
Do it. It could be one of THE MOST under rated games on the NES. It was originally supposed to be a Terminator game. You can tell. Just listen to the break in the song at 1:02.
This has one of the best game music tracks I've ever heard. I hate that my NES and this game is gone! What a classic. Wish they could make it a CD (even today it would be good!!).
When I got this game for Christmas, I thought I was stuck in time. LOL I didn't get up but only to go to the bathroom sometimes. The music was spooky as hell! Great music though. I beat the game too by the way. One of my favorite all time games along with Kung Fu.
man sunsoft always had the best music, not always the best games persay but they really knew how to get a tune stuck in your head despite 8-bit limitations :)
hmm, why does the main character look completely different in this vid compared to my version. where there different characters in the japanese, european and us version?
this game was suppose to be a movie based game...the movie was terminator. they got stripped of their license and had to make a shit story for it. they did this because they wanted to capitalize on the new terminator movie coming out and didnt want people spending time on past projects. so if you listen to the part snus666 gets chills from its got the same terminator sound.
Oh btw i just rememberd, Press B 33 times and then Start at the title screen.
A sound test option will be available. A good thing if you just want to listen to the tracks, and that cheat also gives you nine continues when you later start the game :)
Sunsoft their own very distinct feel to their music. Batman, U*four*ia, Fester's Quest and this. There is something very similar. It's like Lou Reed, who says he can pick out Sterling Morrisons guitar among a thousand samples. Capcom also has their feel, but I think Sunsoft's is more obvious. Somewhat dystopian, with that trademark high pitched vibrato, and then there IS something with that bass and drums!
Best NES game ever! Best game soundtrack ever! I actually tried to contact the composer once just to tell him how impressed I was with the Silius music, but the closest I could get was some co-worker or something. I hope the guy got my message though. Hehe.
I have never heard of this game, but i gotta say i am super impressed by the soundtrack. This is especially impressive since this game is over 20 years old and it still sounds great. I am going to seriously look into finding this gem for my collection. I hope it plays well too!
It does and I spent so much time playing the shit out of it. If a game had good music and sound effects, I could almost overlook anything else that might be wrong.
I love this game! Thanks to Happy Videogame Nerd who told me this was a great game.
I also see you are playing the PAL version of the game: The game character has his helmet on. This music is the best ever! Love the music from the second level (2:37 in the movie).
I dont know how they got that bass sound, but thats signature Sunsoft, almost all of their games had something like this for audio. blaster master anyone?
@xenocore01 That bass sound was Sunsoft's clever way of using the NES's DPCM channel. I dunno man, that's a pretty hard claim to make. There's some amazing composers from both platforms. I've got a few C64 tunes on my own channel and really I didn't discover the C64 until recently (in the last five years) so I'm not going from a nostalgic perspective.
