BTW.... if he tried to show his grace on technique by playing Fantasy genre just like Hanon-exercises(sometimes even those could be performed more interesting)...I found many errors...I'm not even like to argue about dynamics..they are simply doesn't exists!
I'm sorry ! here is the explanation of that expression from documentary about RICHTER "ENIGMA" "I did not found the key to MOZART"... I don't want to believe you going to think that RICHTER was talking about his keys at / for garage door...were the old Goldenveizer version of Mozart Sonatas was stored..!?
I understood what you were trying to say, but Richter was talking about his personal search for Mozart and it is not automatically applicable to Sofronitsky here.
Where did you find "panic instead of Fantasy"? This is an absurd! And BTW, KGB stuff doesn't apply here either...
Absurd....is when ADAGIO performs faster then allegretto..WITHOUT even SOSTENUTO..& sometimes even presto. You doesn't like my social version of criticizing. OK I'll be more real. This version of K396 is awful to me,& you are right about RICHTER...Sofronitsky can not be compared with RICHTER..he is ONE & ONLY.Simply good,Perfect & GENIUS are totally different values..!
@sam0xin This is a fantasy. You should be able to notice that the rules have always been pretty loose when it comes to interpreting fantasies! Mozart would have no problem with the tempo in the performance, or I wouldn't suspect he would mind.
With that said, Mozart would probably dislike the intonation, occasional rubato, and "salon-like" layer of sentimentality attached to his works.
@Lukecash12 I PERFECTLY know this masterpiece... & I know is not from Czerni's op.299...but URTEXT (original) marked by MOZART....in dimension of ADAGIO ... Even if NOT ! performing of this work in this LEVEL of PANIC...& loosing ALL possible ideas on HUGE range of characters...AS FAST AS POSSIBLE !? It is JUST WRONG ! & out of logic...
@sam0xin No, it is his interpretation. That is like saying Rostropovich didn't play Bach right. Music is heavily interpretative. Sofronitsky simply interpreted a fantasy by ingraining the dramatic, sonorous effects of the Russian school of piano performance.
Also, it must be what it must be. If you find it to be panicky, and not tragic enough, you simply haven't been versed in the context from which he derives his interpretations. His playing is WHITE HOT PASSION. That is his perspective.
He did NOT found "the key" for K396...I found rather THE PANIC instead of FANTASY. 1950's were horrible period in history of USSR. Every one, had a fear...To be tortured in KGB's pantries... FOR NO REASON ! I
I rather think Sofronitsky's touch is perfect here, and the mood he set is very personal and nostalgic. Mozart's music is not always "light and bouncing". He suffered too.
This is in my opinion a brilliant performance! His playing reminds me at Pogorelich but I don't know why. Please dear users ,even if you don't agree with me,be nice and don't start hate me,it is o n l y an opinion...
I might be wrong, but I truly believe Sofronitsky has the best recordings ever.
Everytime I hear one of his recordings I feel like it is pure orginality, like the composer himself is reading and interpretating his own composition.
great recording thanx 4 upload love this peice and love this performer!

@Lukecash12 p.s. simply it MUST be in tragic moods ....not as a menueTTO...genre .

This piece wasn't completed, right? How much was composed by Mozart?

beautifull!!!
It is surprising how very different one can interpret mozart!!

Yes, I agree! Beautiful performance- I like the detail...

Love his pure and beautiful tone so badly, but like many Russian pianists, his touch is still not light and bouncing enough to interpret Mozart.
Am I with wrong idea of the Mozart's pieces?

I agree, this fantasia has a rather dark mood, especially in the middle section, and I like his touch ^^

Depends/varies widely, of course. You are not with the wrong idea with liking a different touch, but don't "hate" the other side...

great performance. isnt this the wrong K number though? i thought 475 was the larger one that typically precedes the c min sonata.

Mia culpa!
You are absolutely right!
I simply copied from the file and didn't remember that K 475 is C-moll sonata.
Thank you for catching it!
