I was at this concert! The Central Michigan University Jazz Band played on college night in 1979. I played Bari Sax in the band. I sat in the section to Ella's left. Basie's band was hot and swingin, Ella was smokin' and together they were a five alarm fire!

I absolutely ADORE Ella's voice...I had the blessing of performing one of her renditions of thie very song on tour with the Spelman College Glee club last summer..and though I was coined "lil Ella" everytime I hear her sing...especially in her later years I am reminded that I am NOWHERE near deservant of such a name..and it makes me smile!!!! She is the BEST!

Ella will always be The Queen Of Scat Singing....The First Lady Of Song. I love this lady and her impeccable sensibilities. Frankly, I don't think there's a singer alive today who can match her mastery of true vocal musicality. She is truly one of a kind.
