I did this experiment too months ago. I also kept moving the connection closer and closer until I tried it with no neutrals. Then I stuck a thermometer into the water and boom got a nice shock. Also noticed that the water between the plates violently boiled. So clearly the solution is to run a bridge rectifier on it.
