  • Seriously, I have watched this movie many many times and particularly this scene, but just now I noticed that Jack grabs those peanuts (or whatever they are) at 00:52, I have always thought he makes that drinking move for fun

  • It's interesting that the Bartender never tries to sell the murder to Jack. The Bartender isn't there to make the pitch, he's there to take care of you - it's ironically the care taker that the hotel uses to try and get Jack (who as a father and husband should take care of his family) to "correct" his own family.

  • Lloyd is so polite.

  • great acting again ...^^..pros at work ^^

  • If heaven does really exist, I want it to be a place like this.

  • Lloyd is one creepy dude. Cool though, but who'se buying the drinks? LOL

  • your moneys no good here...ONLY YOUR BLOOD! haha

  • One off the finest films ever to be made or ever will, but, the alcoholism is not pushed so much as it is in the book, where in every little scene, there seems to be a bottle of bourbon and a croquet bat awaiting for Jack.

  • jacks the man

  • This is the best scene ever!

  • Dr. Tyrell at the beginning of his great career.

  • hey wait JD isn't from bourbon =D

  • Lloyd is the devil. If you notice earlier in the movie jack says he'd sell his soul for a beer. Guess who shows up? Lloyd the devil. The bar room is suppose to represent hell so when jack goes back he's basically going back to hell. The bartender runs the bar. The devil runs hell. Its just another way to look at hell. Thts how I interpret it.

  • @xluckyxfingersx Not a bad interpretation.

  • @xluckyxfingersx Actually Hell was created by God. Matthew 25:41 Jesus is God and He created all things. Heaven/Hell, the Earth, Devils, Angels. Colossians 1:16-17

  • This flash back scene is suppose to be from 1921 yet the song in the background was recorded in 1932. I love when Hollywood screws up and they think the public won"t notice.

  • that music is eerie but i like it

  • The bartenders smile crepps me out lol. But I love this movie.:)

  • @a916LEX Its the lighting. The director loved that fluorescent lighting facing upwards.

  • That creepy bartender ain't gettin no tip!

  • in the book he also drank martinis, he called them martians, he never ordered a bourban on the rocks

  • @jeremxy

You know what else was never in the book? Subtlety.

  • hair of the dog tht bit me. never in the book

  • Lloyd and Delbert Grady are the 2 creepiest characters in this movie, hands down.

  • I could see myself living in the overlook hotel, the never ending party, chatting to lloyd forever, becoming mentally unstable and trying to brutally kill my family.

  • @alanmullery Um, yeah, how are those meds workin' for ya, hot shot...

  • Anyone notice that Lloyd never blinks?

  • What ghosts are all about...

Ah...the 1920s...(Good lord, what came after the 1920s?! Depression, World War, yet more genocide...)

or it may have something to do with English colonialism and/or the Native American genocide.

The conquerors don't care one iota about the conquered. That's what I see here. Yet all appears to be smiles and glamour. Lloyd is quite menacing actually.

  • I love the Gold Room Occupied.

  • What does Lloyd mean when he says, "It's not a matter that concerns you Mr Torrence, at least not at this point"??

  • @VVillowz the "matter" is revealed moments later by the dead butler Charles Grady who escorts Jack to the washroom to clean him. Jack thinks he knows who Charles Grady is from the newspaper clippings of The Overlooks infamous past but it is actually Mr. Grady who knows who Jack is..

  • I just realized that Lloyd is Tyrell from the Blade Runner, the god that created the replicants: "The light that burns twice as bright, burns half as long. And you have burned so very, very brightly" . .. "Roy. Commerce is our goal here at Tyrell. "More human than human" is our motto."

  • @Leona10037 I'm guessing that this is also the line that inspired the White Zombie song,"More Human Than Human."

  • @2bin You know I think he is playing the exact same character here which makes a weird connection between both movies.

  • I always tell my home town bartender that, been away, but now I'm back.

  • Anything you say Lloyd, anything you say. Something I would tell my bartender.

  • i cannot watch this film

  • Comment removed

  • @clazza01 It is a heavy film, very heavy -- once you understand it somewhat.

  • EXACTLY what i've been fucking looking for! I have the DVD but i'd rather kill myself than look for it. So thank you sir. And good evening.

  • This my favorite scene , i tried it myself at home, played also the bartender Lloyd added the same music under it and background sound.

see it on: mikesfantasies the shining awards

    Kind regards Mike

  • the bar tenders the fucking devil anyone else agree? Thing about it

  • @QAndJMovies2 Nah, Jack Nicholson IS the fucking devil.

  • Kubrick often used the same actors in his films. Joe Turkel (Lloyd) was one of the WWI French soldiers who was executed by firing squad in "Paths of Glory" and the guy who played Grady was also Malcolm McDowell's father in "A Clockwork Orange."

  • My favourite is the tequila, have never tried burbon before. Feel tempted to try after watching that movie. Is it that good that Jack has to order it everytime he drinks?

  • The Lloyd charater is a class act. Professional and old school. A polite man who know's what you're drinking. Nowadays, all you get are big titted whores tending bar....looking for tips and giving lousy service. (At least in the places I go ....lol)

  • @Univermag I think I'll take the big-titted whores, thanks.

  • @raleighman3000 Don't get me wrong....I like big tited whores too. They serve a purpose......but tending bar is not one of 'em.

  • @Univermag so true its nice when you get a bartender who knows how to make a drink if I have to explain to one more college girl what a rusty nail on the rocks is im gunna hop over and start making em myself, with a nice tip of course.

  • @Univermag are they at least wearing red or black?

  • When done right, subtly creepy stuff is much better than overtly creepy stuff. Case in point: Jack never met any of these people, he has no idea how they got there, but he's talking to Lloyd like he's a friend of the family.

  • @thickterranarmor I think he did meet them in a past life, when he was the caretaker who chopped up his wife and kid, as Delbert Grady explains to him in the bathroom scene. So the gold room scene is a flashback to that past life. That's made even more clear in the last scene, that shows a close-up of the photo of that same 4th of July party in 1921, with Jack's same image in the past. That's the thing that makes this movie so creepy, in a subtle way. I love that scene, and the movie.

  • why cant i have orders from the house when i go drinking

  • @olvi256 Because you're not Jack Torrance............

  • Watch the glass in 1:14than again in 1:20 LOOL

  • Man, drinks were cheap back then. Jack takes out a $1 bill to pay.

  • I wish all bartenders were badasses like Lloyd

  • I love the subtext in this scene and the other visual subtexts which are everywhere.

'Your money's no good here' / Orders from the house' / Drink up'.

  • @0FindGlory Note how the bartender 'offers' him that drink free. He's wearing a blood red jacket. Diabolically untasteful, you might say. Kubrick loves to drop these things in all the time.

  • If I walked in to a scene like that, I'd belly up to the bar and have a few as well.

  • anything you say lloyd - anything you say))))

    great movie

  • Oh ray noble where were you when all thoses stupid music came out. i can die happy with ray noble playing in the back of my head

  • @spyguy122

I second that emotion! The late great Ray was one of the co-writers of one of my all time favorite romantic ballads: "The Very Thought of You". THANKS for your comment !!!

  • Yes, Lloyd, anything you say! Except on Friday, Saturday, and Wednesday nights!!! (lol, lol, lol, lol)

  • This is suppose all in his head, my dad & I love this scene and talk about it all the time.

  • look at 1:01 - 1:08 at the cup. then look at the cup at 1:21 - 1:28. strange how jus more bourbon jus magically appeared

  • @bobbylee1557 ...i think the ice melts!

  • @bobbylee1557 uh ... the ice melted

  • @touchogrey but look at 1:32 the extra bourbon jus disappears

  • @bobbylee1557 and Kubrick did not make mistakes. I'm sure this is intentional...

  • Other continuity errors: position of the olives in the martini glass to Jack's right and the amount of light on the back wall. I never notice these things until I do comparison captures.

  • No my mom was an extra in this scene that took 3 days to shoot...I always remember she told me that the director's asst. said don't 'nod' your heads to confirm a yes or no...just pretend you are chatting..

  • I would sell my soul... for a racing car!

  • strange to notice the people passing by behind torrance.... camera on torrance: some guests walking...camera on Lloyd....camera on torrance again to reply....and the same people as before right in the background, juste like time freezed when Lloyd was talking lol

  • I wish all bartenders were like lloyd

  • Is he dreaming this or is the booze going down smoothly?

  • joe turkel was brilliant as lloyd. calm, friendly and very creepy. awesome! well and Jack ? amazing as usual ;)

  • @Cosmic86x

You are SO right! Jack & Joe were both excellent in their respective roles !!!

  • I bet my money is no good at that bar either.

(I know where I'm going this Friday night.)

  • ANYTHING U SAY LLOYED , ANYTHING U SAY!!!!!

  • Lloiyd is Moe

  • "Hair of the dog that bit me!"

  • @h2opolodan11 haha thats probally the best line in the film, along with "you've had your whole fucking life to think things over!" hahaha

  • The song is " Midnight with the stars and You" Words & Music by Jimmy Campbell, Reg Connelly & Harry Woods.

  • there is an icecube, then not, then yes, then no!!! great eye!!!!

  • Look at the glas of borboun @ 1:15 - 1:32 Epic-fail xD

  • @Ockula

that really isn't a continuity error. Kubrick does this sort of thing all the way through the movie - showerheads dissappear, typewriters change colours, windows dissappear. It's because the hotel has a mind of its own.

  • @31193JaH Seriously? That's is just awesome! That's worth to check out :) I will try do google a bit. Thx for the info mate :)

  • @Ockula Kubrick probably shot that scene so many times the ice melted

  • what song is that playing on the background?

  • This is the best scene from The Shining in my opinion, I love the way he walks down to the bar whilst all of the ghosts drink and smoke, pure genius and Jack Nicholson is by far the greatest actor who has ever lived and Stanley Kubrick is the great director!

  • Classic cinema - just superb!!!!!

  • Hair of the dawg that bit me

  • this part scares the shit outa me. all the ghost just in the bacground seems like there half there and half in jacks mind

  • Lloyd doesnt blink. :P

  • @CaptainPommby Shit dude your right :O O_O

  • BEST

  • Anything you say Lloyd, anything you say , Joe Turkel, from da BRONX! Holler! He was terrific in Blade Runner too!

  • O fuckkkkkkkkkkkkk thats rightttt wow good eye dude..Hes the creator with the crazy glasses right wow i would have never picked that up...

  • "Orders from the House"

    H-E-L-L!!!!!

  • ''-Your money's no good here, Mr Torrance.''

-Joe Turkel wins any Staring Contest !

  • god idd love to have a hotel full of ghosts from the 20s 30s and 40s, cause those are my favorite times, haha

  • @redfan45x

    Are you actually that old?

  • brilliant music. midnight and the stars and you. great piece

  • drink up mr torrence

  • Anything you say Lloyd! Anything you say!

  • From 0:17 to 0:27 you can see Kubrick's daughter sitting on the far right side of the couch (the one closest to the bar).

  • @SadHead17 .... And how would you know this?

  • This is my favorite scene from "The Shining". Joe Turkel is SUCH an amazing character actor. An underated powerful screen presence. He & Jack Nicholson are simply SUPERB here. Thanks a LOT for sharing this with us! :)

  • @JubalCalif this is mine as well...

  • @CaduPurta

You obviously are a person of good taste & rare refinement !!!

  • @JubalCalif Nothing beats the bathroom scene though. :D

  • Great scene, great music.

  • @hurtgrudge5 great movie

  • troppo bella sta scena!

  • remids me much of the Tower of Terror

  • same here.

  • no charge, where's this bar!!!

  • Probably my favourite part of the movie, watch how the volume of whiskey in the glass changes throughout the conversation

  • I am suprised that escaped the editing room. I thought Kubrick was a nazi for detail, especially in regards to authenticity and editing.

  • no, the shining is full of hidden messages. If the amount of bourbon changed, it was meant to.

  • Did Stanley tell you that before he died? LMAO

  • "Yes" It was all done on purpose as a "Psychological" type of Horror film, And Kubrick was a master at that. "The book was just as suspensful as the movie. This was'nt your everyday made horror film. For Instance in this scene we see Jack reaching for hi's wallet to pay for hi's drinks. In the second scene, We see he has no money in hi's wallet!

    Coincedence "or" What?

  • yeah, there's a possibility that that whiskey isn't even real.

  • Unfortunately, the sometimes extreme number of takes Kubrick insisted upon made complete coherence in certain aspects, such as the level of liquid in a given glass, quite impossible.

  • Absolutely! The music, the faces of the interpreters, the hall, the atmosphere (complitely changed in a paceful sense here), .. everything is perfect.

    The best part!

  • I hate to tell you this Lloyd, but, that's not Bourbon.

  • The song is "Midnight, The Stars and You." It was recorded by the Ray Noble Orchestra. That's Al Bowlly on the vocal. A truly wonderful song for Noble and Bowlly.

  • My old friend Lloyd....Your money is no good here, orders from the house! Thanks

ifyouaskmee blogspot - The Jersey Lilly-Outlaws and Miscreants

  • what's the name of that music?

  • wow.....this is one of my best scene of shining!!!loyd and jack!!!
