Seriously, I have watched this movie many many times and particularly this scene, but just now I noticed that Jack grabs those peanuts (or whatever they are) at 00:52, I have always thought he makes that drinking move for fun
It's interesting that the Bartender never tries to sell the murder to Jack. The Bartender isn't there to make the pitch, he's there to take care of you - it's ironically the care taker that the hotel uses to try and get Jack (who as a father and husband should take care of his family) to "correct" his own family.
in the movie, in the bar room scene, it shows jack drinking jack daniel's whiskey. hmmmm. jack was drinking jack daniels. i don't recall whether the original novel showed jack drinking jack daniel's whiskey, but i do recall that the original novel said that the real name of jack was john daniel torrance. thus, we have jack daniel drinking jack daniel's whiskey.
One off the finest films ever to be made or ever will, but, the alcoholism is not pushed so much as it is in the book, where in every little scene, there seems to be a bottle of bourbon and a croquet bat awaiting for Jack.
Lloyd is the devil. If you notice earlier in the movie jack says he'd sell his soul for a beer. Guess who shows up? Lloyd the devil. The bar room is suppose to represent hell so when jack goes back he's basically going back to hell. The bartender runs the bar. The devil runs hell. Its just another way to look at hell. Thts how I interpret it.
@xluckyxfingersx Actually Hell was created by God. Matthew 25:41 Jesus is God and He created all things. Heaven/Hell, the Earth, Devils, Angels. Colossians 1:16-17
This flash back scene is suppose to be from 1921 yet the song in the background was recorded in 1932. I love when Hollywood screws up and they think the public won"t notice.
I could see myself living in the overlook hotel, the never ending party, chatting to lloyd forever, becoming mentally unstable and trying to brutally kill my family.
Ah...the 1920s...(Good lord, what came after the 1920s?! Depression, World War, yet more genocide...)
or it may have something to do with English colonialism and/or the Native American genocide.
The conquerors don't care one iota about the conquered. That's what I see here. Yet all appears to be smiles and glamour. Lloyd is quite menacing actually.
@VVillowz the "matter" is revealed moments later by the dead butler Charles Grady who escorts Jack to the washroom to clean him. Jack thinks he knows who Charles Grady is from the newspaper clippings of The Overlooks infamous past but it is actually Mr. Grady who knows who Jack is..
I just realized that Lloyd is Tyrell from the Blade Runner, the god that created the replicants: "The light that burns twice as bright, burns half as long. And you have burned so very, very brightly" . .. "Roy. Commerce is our goal here at Tyrell. "More human than human" is our motto."
Kubrick often used the same actors in his films. Joe Turkel (Lloyd) was one of the WWI French soldiers who was executed by firing squad in "Paths of Glory" and the guy who played Grady was also Malcolm McDowell's father in "A Clockwork Orange."
My favourite is the tequila, have never tried burbon before. Feel tempted to try after watching that movie. Is it that good that Jack has to order it everytime he drinks?
The Lloyd charater is a class act. Professional and old school. A polite man who know's what you're drinking. Nowadays, all you get are big titted whores tending bar....looking for tips and giving lousy service. (At least in the places I go ....lol)
@Univermag so true its nice when you get a bartender who knows how to make a drink if I have to explain to one more college girl what a rusty nail on the rocks is im gunna hop over and start making em myself, with a nice tip of course.
When done right, subtly creepy stuff is much better than overtly creepy stuff. Case in point: Jack never met any of these people, he has no idea how they got there, but he's talking to Lloyd like he's a friend of the family.
@thickterranarmor I think he did meet them in a past life, when he was the caretaker who chopped up his wife and kid, as Delbert Grady explains to him in the bathroom scene. So the gold room scene is a flashback to that past life. That's made even more clear in the last scene, that shows a close-up of the photo of that same 4th of July party in 1921, with Jack's same image in the past. That's the thing that makes this movie so creepy, in a subtle way. I love that scene, and the movie.
@0FindGlory Note how the bartender 'offers' him that drink free. He's wearing a blood red jacket. Diabolically untasteful, you might say. Kubrick loves to drop these things in all the time.
I second that emotion! The late great Ray was one of the co-writers of one of my all time favorite romantic ballads: "The Very Thought of You". THANKS for your comment !!!
Other continuity errors: position of the olives in the martini glass to Jack's right and the amount of light on the back wall. I never notice these things until I do comparison captures.
No my mom was an extra in this scene that took 3 days to shoot...I always remember she told me that the director's asst. said don't 'nod' your heads to confirm a yes or no...just pretend you are chatting..
strange to notice the people passing by behind torrance.... camera on torrance: some guests walking...camera on Lloyd....camera on torrance again to reply....and the same people as before right in the background, juste like time freezed when Lloyd was talking lol
that really isn't a continuity error. Kubrick does this sort of thing all the way through the movie - showerheads dissappear, typewriters change colours, windows dissappear. It's because the hotel has a mind of its own.
This is the best scene from The Shining in my opinion, I love the way he walks down to the bar whilst all of the ghosts drink and smoke, pure genius and Jack Nicholson is by far the greatest actor who has ever lived and Stanley Kubrick is the great director!
This is my favorite scene from "The Shining". Joe Turkel is SUCH an amazing character actor. An underated powerful screen presence. He & Jack Nicholson are simply SUPERB here. Thanks a LOT for sharing this with us! :)

Unfortunately, the sometimes extreme number of takes Kubrick insisted upon made complete coherence in certain aspects, such as the level of liquid in a given glass, quite impossible.
