You know, I came here expecting to hear something that was above and beyond what is happening at the state honor band level in this day and age. I'm very familiar with Nelhybel's Trittico and what I am hearing is an incredible performance that is definitely worthy of the Texas Honor Band name, but I think one of the top bands in Texas like Duncanville or Marcus could top this performance today.
# 2 - This was 1969....after 41 years, let's hope music education has improved and upped the level of musicianship, but its doubtful that the current level is much higher this...
Duncanville's TMEA performance in 2008 and Langham Creek's performance in 2006 are at a higher quality of musicianship than this. Not by much, but it's noticeable.
Great performance! I was in a pretty good wind ensemble (1st bassoon) that played this piece in high school in the late 70's... it is a challenge to play well and as intended (as in trumpets going for that high note in the 2nd movement). My only gripe is with your director, I thought the tempo for the 3rd movement was a hair too fast (yes, it should feel rushed but not overly so as to affect phrasing). Excellent job!
Wow! He was definitely an amazing director. He conducted a Region XIV-(Corpus) band in the late 90's and I was lucky enough to be the top clarinet player in the group. Great recording here. Crazy how there are no groups nowhere near this good in South Texas. Sad.
...and 16 All State / Orchestra members. The following year the band had 51 All Region members and 10 All State. Mr Snavely went on to a distinguished career at the University of Mississippi and was Director of Bands at Notre Dame from 1987-1999.
They had 57 All-Region that year but couldn't remember the All state count. Thanks for the clarification. There can't be too many Band programs with over 50 All Region members 2 years running. I was in 7th Grade at Lincoln with Ronald Smith at the time.
WOW.

@takigan Well what's more important is reality.

Haven't heard Duncanville but Langham Creek's was slow, unexciting, and wimpy, and those are the bright spots....

Mike Olson was the assistant to Dr. Snavely.

Yes, that's correct. - along with Smith, Bolls, and Ratley, who were at the junior highs. What a great team and band program that was!

WOW! This might possibly be the best performance of Trittico that I have ever heard, and from a high school band. BRAVO!

When I listen to this, I can still see Mr. Snavely directing us. What a great memory!
