  • Is it me or when Smerch's name comes up in the title credits, the camera vaguely resembles Wheatley??? o.O

  • the world doesnt have to cater to the yanks,if you dont get it thats TOUGH

  • @waddlesarmy i think its money and opening markets thats foremost on there minds raher than making a point to the yankees.

  • Who's Clive Owen? It's Clive Warren

  • @SoflesViolence what would have really made this christmas special is an appearance by rebecca de mornay. her and clive warren have some serious chemistry onscreen.

  • Let's stop the whole UK vs US thing... the US is so fundamentally flawed as a country and the UK so brilliant that it seems pointless to argue.

  • @ukulazy

    damn. hypocritical much?

though personally I think the U.S. has a very good foundation, it's just all the layers above that that suck. severe cultural decay, corruption, etc.

  • @waldoman7 It was a joke. You missed the irony, which is not surprising.

  • @ukulazy

...more joking? you have a very odd sense of humor. anger and ignorance being the norm here, I didn't expect it.

  • @CTrace fuck off.

  • I want a ricky gervais doll :3 lol

  • a few year ago my friend davis he write to the jim will fix it program, he wish to become the astonut but they say to him they can no fix this thing but they say if he wish he can learn to do the morris dance-ing or he can meet the sue pollard, davis he does not wish to do either of these thing so when they send the car to pick him up he say he has the billious belly ;-)

  • @marshalllucky this

  • I wish it were a real comedy.

  • i love the overlooked joke with the agent, where barry is trying to get dog muck out of his shoe, and darren says its from 'next door's great dane' - so barry stayed over last night? it's the attention to detail, and the layered and clever writing that makes ricky and steve two of the best writers of today.

  • clive warren was awesome

  • clive warren

  • EVERYONE BEWARE THAT PART 6 IS MISSING!!!

  • @BiznizTrademark no it's not?

  • @BiznizTrademark Its back now (:

  • i wouldnt kick maggie outta bed.

  • @Bennos01 Actually, he treats her like crap in this very episode. ;)

  • Clive Warren , where is Rebecca Demorney ?

  • Clive Owen.. karl pilkington reference.. I also think maggy is karl in actor form..

  • @ddstar hmm nah

  • what are the differences between the uk and us versions?

  • @Dangriff679 uk versions good, us versions crap

  • @tgerule shut up mate im British have watched em both and there are only very minute pop culture tweaks different between the 2 versions, stop trying to instigate a UK USA argument

  • @lickstickly no

  • @tgerule inspire response mate

  • @lickstickly yep thought might cut it short cause cba to argue bye :)

  • @tgerule no probs peace bruv

  • the first skit he does, i thought it was peter griffin.

  • There's a US version because Extras has been a co-production all along with an American company - HBO.

  • jade goody lol

  • Gah! i lovee ittt!!!! <3

  • 10 people are having a laugh

  • Poor Maggie didn't get any food at the set.

  • To be honest, I think it's time America grew their own brains. They've copied most of the English tv programmes.

  • @mollybannister Couldn't agree more hun!

  • am sure he's avin a dig at peter kay, with all the catchphrases an doctor who appearance

  • He had to have based that character on Reg Holdsworth from Corrie...

  • "...hard boiled eggs to a dog...it's mad."

  • what? little fat ugly thing? paTHETic? no? lmao

  • I WANT MORE EXTRAS!!!

But Ricky is right: It's the quality not the quantity ( like he said at an award show- comparing the UK office to the US office)

But still: I want more. I'm so greedy and there's no good comedy in Germany! They all suck really bad!!!

  • *pushes past all the silly people argueing" Thanks for the uploads pal x

  • I love Stephen Merchant. He is absolutely hilarious.

  • Clive Owen? Don't she mean Clive Warren?

  • @wil3333 And Peep Show.

  • when the whistle blows is so stupid it is funny

  • I have this DVD, on the original, the line is "I will get my money back. i have ordered 10,000 Scissor Sister Dolls"..... here it is "Same Difference Dolls". Oh well, I think the lawyers have been at work.

  • hahahah 'i may as well send barry' and then his laugh! such quality

  • Richard the Manager was in 28 Days later.

  • most depressing comedy ever

  • the US version of this has a kramer doll instead of a jade goody. what a liberty. much prefer the jade line!

  • Hard boiled eggs to a dog, It's mad....

  • "thank god for the exploitaion of ten year old children!"

"absolutely" stephen merchant you are the best thing to happen to britain!!!! <3

  • that jade goody doll is amazing hahaha

  • Was about to turn off about about 30 seconds- actually thought it was Big Brother garbage. Thanks for uploading

  • after this I think I'm going to have to watch The Office... it's like when I watch The Office, after the Christmas special I need to watch Extras. It's contagious

  • the 10 people who disliked this video are pedos

  • @logix2010 i agree, that or suicidal lol

  • haha day 7 all the house mates are in the pool

  • You know what i find weird? Why make a different version for America? Imagine someone saying "we need a different version for Australia, or Canada". We pander too much to one country.

  • @AlexisCapri The perfect example is top gear.

In Australia we have our own version which while funny is almost unwatchable for me because the original series is so bloody good.

  • @AlexisCapri Haha! It's nothing to do with pandering to the USA, you big loon!

It's simply that the US has the biggest market and fanbase. Do you understand the rules of supply and demand?

  • @AlexisCapri read your comment about why we should do one programme for the UK and another for the US. It's because Extras is produced by BBC and HBO (a company from the UK, and another from the US.) Canada and Australia had no input into the making of Extras.

  • @Racehazard your a hazard to logic

  • @newarchrk huh? ("you're" not "your" btw. I'm resisting the temptation to call you a hazard to spelling/grammar.) Nothing about what I said was illogical.

  • @AlexisCapri All I know is that we Brits never remake anything American, whilst Americans always remake British comedy...bigger size doesn't give you bigger talent.

  • @malmo66 Not true mate, i can only think of one at the moment but Mean Machine was a british remake of The Longest Yard. The newest one with Adam Sandler in was even a remake of the original with Burt Reynolds, who actually appears in the Adam Sandler one.

The football team (or safe rugby as i call it) in the original film is was called Mean Machine i think, i know they are in the newest version.

  • @VerbalGraffitti Well obviously there will be a few. I have not heard of any of your examples. Lets face it, Americans remake much more of our comedy than we do of theirs.

  • @malmo66 I'm not having a go or anything mate, you did say in your first post though that WE, as in British never remake American films. Just thought i'd point out that film as an example.

Like you said though, you've never heard of it so you're not going to know really are you, lol.

  • @VerbalGraffitti No I wasn't talking about films. I was talking about TV comedies like Extras. I think you misunderstood me.

  • @malmo66 Apparently so, lol. Fair enough. I can't think of anything either actually.

  • @AlexisCapri that's what happens when you LOSE a war: we get the spoils mate'

  • @tedwilli9 which war is it your referring to there.

  • @tedwilli9 *Cough*Vietnam*Cough*

  • @AlexisCapri well their thick as fuck mate thats why

  • @AlexisCapri Extras pandered to America because it was shown on BBC America

  • @AlexisCapri That's a good point, but you have to remember that tons of jokes in Extras (for example, many celebrity references) wouldn't be understood by Americans. I'm American, but i'm pretty well-versed in English culture. Some of the jokes even go over my head. E.g. most Americans wouldn't know the joke of having a Jane Goody doll or the "Brad Pitt or Sir Trevor McDonald" bit. In this episode they mention The X Factor and Jimmy Carr. So stuff like that is replaced to make it understandable.

  • @renthead24 ok but why make it understandable to Americans but not any other country, since they won't know who those people are either

  • @DommesTemp because america is one of the largest markets........ next question

  • @miamiscifi largest market of idiots who are lazy to appreciate the humour and culture of others? needing to remake a great work like "let the right one in" because the masses aren't capable of reading subtitles and watching the film at the same time?

  • @AlexisCapri oh yeah and there's a version for America because this was a co-production between HBO and the BBC.

  • Comment removed

  • @AlexisCapri for obvious reason imo

  • @AlexisCapri if there is pandering theyre actually "pandering" to the UK, with a different version.. the us market is bigger, in the USA *most* brit stars mentioned, including the catch phrases, are nOT known in the US. Thus changes are made for effect and clarity.

  • @miamiscifi Fuck the Americans. Why pander to the bastards? They can look up the people if they don't know them. They'll learn something then get the joke.

  • @bootymanager Wonder if u guys thought that in ww2 roflmao. america is the largest consumer of entertainment, thats why...

  • @AlexisCapri except there are like 6 other different versions of the show in different countries, so what you're saying doesn't make sense. why did a second series of the office come out in america? because ricky gervais and steve merchant wanted to get filthy fucking rich, thats why. canada and australia don't have enough population to get their own show, plain and simple. the world is much larger than brittain and not everyone 'gets' the culture. as goes with every country to another.

  • @AlexisCapri I'm an American and I agree with you. I really don't understand the favoritism.

  • @AlexisCapri I think it's just so the references like Jade Goody etc are changed to more familiar people-who Canada and Australia would also recognise

  • @AlexisCapri Humour changes with cultures.

  • The jealousy and resentment in his character just builds up over time and he becomes such an arse in this episode!

  • 0:48 - the words "steve merchant" came up with the cctv camera, was that on purpose to take the piss out of his goggly eyes

  • anyone notice how andy's old agent offers him the same exact shows as the new "better" agent does later on in the episode? dr. who, hotel babylon, and celebrity big brother

  • That "I don't get it" bloke should go on a date with Maggie D:

  • I love 'Barry''s laugh at about 8:03! Hahaha!

  • I love Ricky Gervais, but it really irritates me how dismissive he is of Doctor Who and sci-fi and fantasy in general. He's clearly made his mind up and nothing will change it.

  • does anyone know the name of the music in the background while they looking at the andy dolls?

  • @alltoohuman17 too true bud made me laugh thanx mate

  • @alltoohuman17

    Harsh but true.

  • @alltoohuman17 thats a terrible thing to say, the only People who slagged Her off were goverment led puppets

  • The Jade Goody doll is awesome, I want one.

  • hes a genius...and the best kind..the one who doesnt know it

  • I can't help but feel that this is what Gervais really feels inside watching Extras... In a way, I feel for the guy. He is great though, a credit to our country for sure.

  • I looked that up and read it. Very very silly. Invention of Lying stolen from a work done in 1666? What are the chances that within 400 years someone just might come up with the same idea? Either way it's the concept that's borrowed, I see no story nor similar narrative in either of these.

  • Saying Extras copied Curb Your Enthusiasm is like saying Curb Your Enthusiasm is a copy of Arrested Development. It just isn't.

Has whoever written it watched either show?

Apart from similar cinematography the shows are worlds apart. Not to mention Ricky Gervais interviewed Larry David and they both talked about their respective shows, neither of whom accused each other of plagiarism.

Ghost Town a copy of A Christmas Carol? How many retellings/adaptations of this story have there been?

  • @acountddd Everyone has influences, but none of his material since The Office is er. . . his material.

    Too many co-incidences

  • ahhh, pre recession...

  • Why isnt he still firends with jonothan ross in this?

  • And it's a tuuuuuuuuuuuunnnnnnnneeeeeeeeee

  • Extras the series was pretty good, i'd say as good as the office at least. There are many shows i think are better than those two, however.... I still believe THIS is the greatest bit of TV i've ever seen, this special is beyond words.... If you don't cry at the end then you're in-human....

  • shilpur poppadom, shilpur fuckalar

  • I can't decide whether to set those Jade Goody dolls on fire or just piss on them. Or maybe I could set them alight, then put out the fire with my urine. It's a mind field.

  • @TheConciseStatement "Mind field"?

    Shut the FUCK up.

  • :( don't slag off dr. who

  • they're not really, dr who is camp and not classy, that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with enjoying it.

    I <3 extras and dr who :)

  • I don't think camp is the right word, and it's classy.........enough.

Still it didn't portray it as the fantastic show it is and i wouldn't be thrilled if i got comments about a tv program which i had created, laughing at yourself is great but not at the expense of another show.

  • dr who is shit like your mum in bed!

  • Don't slag 'em off it's their opinion

  • That song they play over Maggie's sad period near the end of the special nearly ruined it for me. Gervais' taste in music is usually excellent, but that song is sappy and makes my skin crawl -- and it makes me laugh a little. Is it a Brit song, or something I should know? I'd love to hear I wasn't the only one put off by it.

  • Aww poor Maggie

  • its very sad , but i wish there was such a show as when the whistle blows... i think i need help.. gervaises face is a classic..

  • I actually liked it too. The problem is that when Ricky and Steve set out to make a show that epitomises all that's wrong with cheap, uninspired, run of the mill comedies, they do it so cleverly that it's still funny despite itself.

  • @mmorpgrules92474607 You might wanna look into shows from the 70s like "Are You Being Served" and "Fawlty Towers", which are accessible comedies (but are actually good!)

  • What's the music playing over the credits?

  • It's the Troika piece from Lieutenant Kije by Sergei Prokofiev

  • 'Oh, no-one could think that you don't know what you're doing, that you're a total waste of space and that you shouldn't be in the industry'

'Well thanks mate, but you'd be surprised.'

  • Words cannot describe how amazing the first 3.5 minutes are.

...or the whole thing. This should have been released in cinemas.

  • Anyone else think When the Whistle Blows is actually funny than some BBC sitcoms- thinking Green Green Grass?

  • No its not...but he looks similar.

  • you'd neva see that jade doll bit on tv agen lol

  • i think When the Whistle blows is oddly funny-how sad am i?

  • @cam230723 Are you 'avin a laugh? Is he 'avain a laugh?

  • @cam230723

It kind of reminds me of Keeping Up Appearances or an extended Benny Hill sketch.

  • @cam230723 not very two and a half men is about the same funny

  • i think she is funny..she gives a nice change up from Gervais whos always "On" She most always says the wrong thing at thee worst time..lol

  • those noises ricky makes at the start r just comedy gold

  • Comment removed

  • didn't he get an audition for a robert de niro film at the end of the second season...?

  • no he just wanted to meet him

  • why?

  • i dont get u dude if u watched extra's you would know that Robert De Niro was the reason Andy wanted to become an actor so of course he wanted to meet him, who wouldn't want to RDN? the mans a legend

  • if you watched extras you would realise that "When the Whistle Blows" is NOT the kind of programme that Robert de Niro would typically enjoy (taking into account the man's film track record), so my question was 'WHY WOULD RDN WANT TO MEET ANDY MILLMAN?' - not the other way round!

The only reason I could think is if he was impressed by Millman's acting, and wanted to offer him some kind of acting role....

I'm not an idiot, I just can't remember it being explained in the show.

  • i know that ukulazy but De Niro did it as a favour to Johnathan Woss and im sorry what audition did Andy go to for the the Robert De Niro film?? this was the last episode of the series apart from the christmas specials and the only audition he goes on is the sequel to the byron film that Greg is in so sorry dude but im kinda lost here

  • It's not literally an audition, like he has for Sir Ian Mckellen, but his agent tells Andy that De Niro is interested in having Andy being part of his new film, which is why Andy goes to meet him. But in the show, Andy never actually meets him because he goes to visit the sick kid instead. Then he gets a phone call saying RDN still wants to meet him, so they go for drinks in a bar later I think, but this isn't actually shown on the episode.

So it's strange that it isn't mentioned in the xmas ep

  • I remember this scene very clearly too.
