I used to listen song eons ago....but anyway I always pictured the small blue thing as a marble. But it can be so many things. The lyrics to this song are amazingly well written.

My favorite female singer/songwriter. This is still my 2nd fave song of hers. I had the pleasure of meeting her after a show on her '07 tour and she couldn't have been more friendly and gracious.

@HealingHerbalRemedy I know what you mean, but I'm not sure that's ever really been the case, but maybe a little more talent used to squeeze its' way through back then.
My name is Luka. I don't live on the second floor. I don't live anywhere because the Israeli defence Force demolished my house. Don't play for Apartheid Israel. End the occupation.. Boycott Israel
Oh, boo hoo really. I live in Sderot and now I have no home because terrorists bombarded it from your house!
Tell you leaders to stop using you as live shields and stop blaming us for your faults!! Israel is very very pacient and kind with you terrorists. But some day we WILL have enough!
@MyDanaw My leaders? hahaha, dude, im from Argentina. I think Palestine cause should be everyone cause..but not for you the zionists, the assassins, the baby killers...Free Palestine! Stop the genocide in Gaza. End the Occupation.
Ahh.. Gaza IS free dude... I think you are mistaking the zionists for the Palestinians. Or you're just a liar.
We SAVE babies, and if you'll learn history you're in for such a surprise as for what is REALLY going on here.. but ignorance is bliss. Just stay in your blind hate for the jewish people. We have a country and up yours to every one who hates us :D
I'm not surprised by you. Isn't Argentina a refuge to all nazies who managed to escape??
@MyDanaw ok dude, you have a serious problem, nobody gives a f...about you or your country, we care about Palestinian people, we don't hate you, actually i have a lot of jew friends....but the only difference is that they don't support the occupation.
Hey, first of all good to know you're not just another jewish hater, even though "nobody gives a f..." isn't accurate.
Our enemies do. And if you read history you'll find out all through it we were killed and chassed by the arabs here even before it was Israel. I suggest you go find out who gave this place the name "palestine" in the first pleace and what are the origins of the arabs called "palestinians".
@MyDanaw You know nothing about me so the serious problems are not mine, dude. I'm not religious at all. Just not stupid and know my history.
Every time THEY try to eliminate US, since 48 and before.
We don't have any territories that don't belong to us. Sorry, someone really messed up with your mind about what is going on here. but I'm not surprised as for they have a well oiled lying machine.
Did you know that even though we disconnected from Gaza we still support them with money, electricity' water etc'? and they don't pay us any taxes, believe me. We also take care of sick children in our hospitals. We're such terrible terrorists, really...
and the terrorists we capture can sit in our prisons and get a degree on Israel's expanse, they have privileges like visitations from their families and the red cross and so on, while they wouldn't let anyone visit Gilad Shalit?
You seriously need a reality check out. I'm so tired of all the lies about Israel and our army, really, it's time for you and yours alike to know the truth.
@MyDanaw Is there really any point in posting all this stuff under a YouTube vid? If you're going to take the time and trouble to argue with ignorant people then you might as well do it at a political site, such as that of The Guardian newspaper, here in the UK, where most readers will at least be interested to read what you have to say.
@mkrulz77 I've been in love with her music from her beginnings, the tragic thing is that I am also in love with her since I was about twelve years old and I'm 38 right now...When somebody asks me what kind of celebrity I like my thoughts always go towards Suzanne. She's sweet, blessed with good music, with a voice that can make you reach the stars, and in my opinion, so beautyful.
When I first listened to Suzanne's music, I imediately realized that this woman is not only a musician, she's a poet, too. I "TRY" to write, too. And many times she inspires me to do something artful... to write a poem or a song. And this song in particular. I remember not trying to interpret this song but just feeling it. Difficult to describe. Lonely and in peace with myself? Free? You can put it how you want but her song is just the blade, the warm blood that follows is your own...
She's just too good. She makes me too sad though, because the things she sings about I know are there but I never see them. thats why I cannot listen to her for long
Suzanne constantly amazes me with her introspection and imagery. I've loved her since Tom's Diner, and am very, very grateful that she is still recording. And no, they do NOT make music like this anymore. I'm afraid that introspection and imagery with this generation is an in depth text message with accompanying photo. Pity.
I just recently got the album (good one btw), and this lovely song is the one I like best. The imagery is just wonderful. Nice to see a live version on here.
Suzanne Vega took an apple pie that was cooling on my windowsill. My talking lobster, Hank, saw the whole darn thing. Dont be fooled by the Vega Meister- shes a cold hearted pie thief. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
i think she's comparing herself to a fragile glass marble...but it could apply to our fragile planet just as well...she definitely gets ur imagination going with her soothing voice and awesome poetry.
I had been familiar with "Luka" in 1987and brushed it off as just one more over-played top 40 song. That same year, a college radio station played this song and I sat up and took notice, not knowing who the artist was until the end of the song. The station played several other "deep cuts" off the first album and I have been a loyal fan ever since, but Small Blue Thing was THE song pulled me in. Awesome! (bty - I grew to love "Luka" as well.)
I first heard her name while working in a record store in Louisiana...I really didn't think much of the album...her name was not familiar...but upon hearing it, I realized I had found a rare jewell...an artist I would always follow.
This great tune is about the aggressive side of being a victim. She's singing about how you can get revenge simply by refusing to return love.
Always, she speaks of herself as an object that holds its subject in disdain and finally escapes--"cold against your skin, lost against your fingers, falling down the stairs." And ultimately the subject (the listener) loses this "smooth, curious, unblinking" thing to the sky. Whatever your reading, this is a fan-fucking-tastic tune.
I think most singer-songwriters get it absolutely wrong when they try to write "poetry" and set it to a melody. What makes a good song lyric does not necessarily make for good poetry, and vice versa.
But "Small Blue Thing" is one of several superb Vega songs that works as both powerful poetry on the page and in the tune. It is simple, selective, and haunting in its imagery. This one's a rare beauty.
Finally some good poetry. I HATE bad poetry, but this is really really incredible poetry. And singing is good. So is the guitar playing, that's pretty nice.
Fantastic, amazing, no words to describe the atmosphere created by this absolutely incredible music piece...I remember waking up at 6 a.m to record this performance in a spanish TV channel
this song like effects some great feelings i never had so i never stop listening to it!suzanne we love you and ur voice its so clear and pure continue your talent!!!
