Thanks a lot. I did Mimi in my highschool-days (and even Juliette), but in the Jerusalem-Music-Academy my vocal-teacher directed me to coloratura-singing. I didn't forget those aria, though, and hope to sing them again.
It wasn't sung in a recitative way. I know it is Bellini, and the legato is in the phrases themselves! Just look at the notes, the pauses between the phrases, and the meanings of the words, which are emotional. I was thought to express them as well.
Come to think of it - maybe today I would do it in another way (I'm still a student - it depends also on the vocal-teacher's influence), but you must admit that this ARIETTA is on the borderline between Aria and Lied.
I think that cantatore11 was referring to the lack of legato due to the frequent breathing eg if you listen to jose carreras in the opening phrase you will note that there are no breathing pauses whereas you breath four times.
