  • turn it to 11....

  • This mans talent for writing songs and as a musician, are innate. This is not talent that you pick up here and there along the way. He is a man of brilliance and integrity.

  • Just might be the best version of this song-great guitar!

  • And this is how you turn a country band into something resembling metal - give them to Neil Young.

  • That's my friend Anthony Crawford on Neil's left playing guitar and singing backup... So Cool!!!

  • <3 this song

  • He was the bomb back in the day & till this day no one has sounded like him.The words to his songs are so pure and simple but at the same time they make you think. Wonderful music.Neil Young fan forever!

  • Wow.

  • 9 minutes and 28 seconds of pure bliss. Fluid is the word that comes to mind.

  • genious guitar playing to plug into such cosmic soulfulness bluesy wear-your- heart-on-your sleeve. paired with cyrstal clear high tenor voice tone-

this is why I can't listen to stuff on fm today

  • Such a great Neil song!

  • Now I understand , Thank You!

  • wonderfully sad song about Heroin. Burned the gooves out of Everyone knows This Is Nowhere album. One of my top 10 albums. Had the old Koss headphones full tilt.

  • COWGIRL IN THE SAND! hahah yeah

  • Im 16 and the first part of the (studio version) of the solo is one of the greatest things ever recorded

  • @henryfuckingrollins Cool, man! Glad you are liking some of the classic stuff. If you like that solo, check out Cowgirl in the Sand...Neil is a very underrated guitarist.

  • een wonder

  • Me encantan, recuerdo mis viejos tiempos, veanlos tocar e interpretar esta canción en el año 1009, una nota como siempre.

  • @vmse24 Enmiendo: 2009

  • yes..

  • at 2:18 -- Neil: "Why am I using this stupid flanger effect?"

  • Totally awesome!!! Pretty rude to run the credits through a jam session like this one :(

  • got chills at 720

  • Brother is where its at, u cant stop a freight train from comin back

  • this sounds like pink floyd, it's awesome.. neil young was so young :')

  • I LIVE BY THE RIVER

  • You ever heard how some people "ain't ready" for something? This song here is a good example. It was not ahead of its time. It was right n time. Like ol No.9 rollin' in.Consistently slays me.Unrequited love. All one song...

  • buttonbarb. OK. Stand corrected. He's good.

  • That's Anthony Crawford on rhythm guitar. He played on the "Old Ways" LP, and toured with Neil in the International Harvesters, mid-eighties.

  • What about the rhythm guitarist Joel Bernstein? Steady as a rock throughout. Plays some really beautiful chords, particularly from 6.20 on. Leads Young into a lovely crescendo at 7.20 and then eases it back out again. Beautiful stuff.

  • There isn't a bad version of this song.

  • Piano, cool!

  • Im 15 years old, when I get pissed at my parents i turn this up to 11, plug in my epiphone and rock out like there's no tommorow.

  • @andturim I'm 61 years old and if I were one of your parents I'd plug in my Les Paul and play along with you.

  • @DocGalvin I'm 52 and I would love to plug in my Paul and join you guys!

  • @andturim i'm not even born yet and i do that

  • One of the greatest songs ever created by Mr.. Young...thank you for sharing your creativity with the world. Our lives are richer for you having done so...

  • Endangered Gibson LP. Beware the wood police are everywhere!

  • I saw him do this at the Electric Factory in Philly, maybe '69. Opening act: Rod Stewart! Crazy Horse was using a wall of blond Fender Bassman amps and I've never heard guitar sound so good. I liked Marshall's up until that night. A legend...

  • 0 dislikes exactly

  • class act

  • Just found a DVD of this 1984 Austin City Limits concert online for $12 and free shipping. Count me in on that deal.

  • Neil's voice and guitar style are perfectly matched. Neither is much to talk about, technically speaking, but both are always evocative, original, and interesting.

Johnny Cash was kind of the same way. Both men are limited vocally, but both are great artists that you never get tired of listening to. They have a magic quality that's hard to quantify (could it be honesty?) -- RIP Johnny, long live Neil !

  • This is the best version of this song I have ever heard. I love it. He absolutely rocks it and his vocals are great.

  • Now boys & girls, this is Rock n' Roll!!!

  • WHER WAS THIS CONCERT AT??

  • @dehartconnections It looks a lot like the Austin City Limits stage.

  • It looks like the Austin City Limits stage, and this is the International Harvesters band.

  • That C to B minor change has dragged me over the rainbow since I was a wee lad.

  • What a song. What a gifted artist. I grew up listening to the amazing music this man created. He deserves alot of respect. Not only for the fact, he is one of the pioneers of Rock, as we know it today, his longevity in this biz and the quality of his music, but he remained true to himself throughout. My husband took me to see Neil Young/Pearl Jam, in the late 90's, for my B-day. A day I won't ever forget. My husband since passed, so Neil Young holds an extra special memory for me.

  • What a great tune looks like The International Harvesters . May be wrong

  • i fuckin love neil young

  • Amazing.. He plays so many "wrong" notes, but it still sounds perfect

  • em 7 and a chord i think

  • This is music. So sad what Rolling Stone writers have to talk about today... nothing. Take notes Lady Ga-Garbage, this is how its done.

  • Love that chunky tone on the Gibson.

  • the chord is muted semi

  • This is sheer BLISS !

  • jesus christ.. so much swag its unbelievable..

  • jesus christ

  • Wow...I don't think this is the best Down By The River from Neil but this version is FUNKY and my man Neil is certainly in the groove...hell this up with the best no doubt.

  • @BarstoolBlues33 Funky as fuck, you're right! I think at the start of the solo he kicks his amp and twists all the knobs on his guitar trying to sort his tone out, can't quite get the sound he's looking for, so just improvises with a solo not really of the character we're used to. A player like the Young lad, however, is playing on what he feels and makes what he can of a situation; giving this performance some awesome STANK!

  • @slimirishguy he just switched to the neck pickup for the thick bluesy tone...before he did move his bigsby tremelo arm out of the way too...and adjust the tone on that neck pickup...as for the kick, lol dunno there, looks like not one of his standard old tube amps, he would never kick those antiques....

  • I can't figure out what chord he's playing at 3:15 please help me someone. Oh and this is awesome!!!

  • @MarcBeckK He is playing the notes g and b, with g on the base, so he's playing e minor but he isn't playing the entire chord. I hope you understand me, and sorry for the bad english, but i'm doing my best, i'm spanish :)

  • @ellyug It was pretty clear, thank you!

  • @ellyug actually the way I played it was e minor 7 but that just didn't sound exactly alike, anyways your help is much appreciated. cheers!

  • @ellyug i dont know anything bout music, so if it doesnt make sense from a musical standpoint i wouldnt know, but from a language point of view this makes perfect sense.

  • @ellyug Thank you, I understand you perfectly; your English is fine.

  • He seems to me it's E>X A>X D>5 G>7 B>0 E>7

  • He seems to me it's E>X A>X D>5 G>7 B>0 E>7

  • He seems to me it's E>X A>X D>5 G>7 B>0 E>7

  • I play it in (progression) Em7, A -- C, Bm -- G, D -- G,D,A. As you try this, u will here the progression as it was written.

  • @jaywylesable Em7 to A7 is the actual sheet music

  • @jaywylesable The verse is EM7, not Em7

  • @MarcBeckK Looked at another way, he's playing what I like to call the Secret Jimi Hendrix Purple Haze Chord.

It's an open bottom E, then a three-note E7 chord: 7th fret A, 6th fret D, 7th fret G--then an extra minor 3rd with 8th fret on the B string, and let the high E ring open. It takes all four fingers to fret the chord, but it's really useful, it's like a major-key E7 chord with a clashing minor 3rd added. Have fun!

  • @MarcBeckK . .yeah, what he said . .Neil does stuff like that alot . .(don't we all??) f'rinstance, on old man he does that "d" structure up a bit, etc. .

  • @MarcBeckK looks like g6th

  • What a musician, what a song: perfectly perfect!

    Exciting version!

  • HA this is ACL, they rolled the credits 2/3 of the way thru, but Neil being Neil, didn't play by the rules

  • stupendo! tutto!

  • Wow. In the zone on this night or what! What DVD is this?

  • @kvnbrn Never mind. I just Googled it.

  • @kvnbrn this looks to be ACL, but don't know if a official release is out

  • Thums up if your smoking a dubbie right now. ThumsUp

  • @3hartford You mean "Thumbs up if you're smoking a doobie, right?

  • @deweypug Rite!

  • Respond to this video... DOObie/yea

  • @3hartford i dont know about the rest of 18....but i actually am so thumbs up !

  • @3hartford ahahaha thats funny but yes i am

  • @3hartford SMOKE EM BIG

  • excellent version indeed, my favorite

  • I think my favorite version of the classic.

    thanks for the post

  • Neil was funky before funky was cool. And for the idiot who wrote the last comment, were you even born yet when when Neil was rockin' onstage with Crosby Stills & Nash at Woodstock in 1969? People like Neil Young & Bob Dylan set the bar back then; We owe part of our musical heritage to them!

  • @jbmccaskill yep 1984

  • And ah so imperfectly, perfect.

  • I love Neil Young, he's so perfectly imperfect.

  • @Xelanderthomas he's just perfect why imperfect ?

  • @zemzamiimad Chill, it's a compliment. Perfect sucks.

  • @Xelanderthomas

That is the best description of Neil Young EVER!

  • @Xelanderthomas fantastic comment!!!

  • The best

  • this is what i was looking for. great post. LOVE NEIL!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • OMG, awesome ,, is this show available on dvd

  • Such an awesome song!

  • the best way to download this mp3 from youtube is to google mp3iffy.

  • One of the few cover songs I looked forward to playing. Tried to take it and make it my own.

  • I learned to play guitar from this concert. I can play this song exactly note for note. Taught me everything I needed to know to get going on the guitar road. Played it over and over and over till I could play it all. Still love it, even after listening to it probably 100,000 times.

  • can anyone tell me please what materials do i need to have a similar sound on a jackson guitar, anyone ?

  • @zemzamiimad A nice Fender Delux or similar tube amp with alot of reverb and a light chorus effect pedal. Have the guitar tuned up and set up for 11 guage strings, that will give it a beefier sound. Unfortunatly, there is never really any way to make a Jackson sound like a 53' Les Paul. But you can get close enough.

  • @BallsCapone thank you my friend =)

  • @zemzamiimad buy yourself a true guitar buddy, a gibson or a fender...even an epiphone will do...just throw away your jackson

  • @zemzamiimad Sorry, but I don't think you could ever coax THAT sound from a Jackson. Jacksons are set up specifically for that scooped-midrange crappy metal sound, and Neil's tone is almost all midrange. at the very least, you could rip out the pickups and put a P-90 in the neck and a Mini-humbucker in the bridge, which would require extra routing AND leave holes in your guitar. I would say to start over. Get an epi with P-90s like the Casino, get a Gibson, a Gretsch. Jackson will never cut it.

  • ran right out and bought everybody knows this is nowhere as soon as I could!

  • I have the entire concert on CD and a stereo re-broadcast from the 1990's on DVD. I just cannot get tired of hearing this music. The album Old Ways did not do the songs on it justice, apart from California Sunset, which was taken from this concert. I also have a TV show with Neil singing Are You Ready for the Country with Waylon... golden stuff!

  • thanks for the awsome post, I too have this on VHS (somewhere)- think this was about the time he also had a country album with Waylon Jennings & Willie Nelson on a few songs- almost makes me wanna call up PBS and send in some $- that's where I saw it-

  • I remember this show years ago, great version. Too bad more people haven`t viewed it.

  • Gotta love the big guy with the fiddle

  • @gevvv That's the late Rufus Thibideau.

  • I have this entire show on an old vhs somewhere. Great to see it again!

  • Great song! great version! just jammin!!!

    thanks for posting! :D
