The album version of this was one of those free flexi discs you got with Guitar Player magazine in the the mid 80s. I remember spending hours in my bedroom trying to learn this. I only copped a few bits and bobs as it was way above my ability, but hey if your gonna copy, do it from the best! A fabulous piece of music, hopefully the tide will turn soon and good musicianmanship will be appreciated and pursued by both fans and players!
I've been working on learning the bassline to this song for a few days now, and I've finally got it under my fingers. To me a long time just to wrap my head around the main riff.
1st time I saw SM was the '84 tour for this album, at a club in NYC. I have a clear memory of Rod Morgenstein, Jerry Peek (the original SMB members) and SM hitting the stage and launching into this tune, and my immediate impression of Morse was THIS GUY IS SUPREMELY CONFIDENT, AND LOVES DOING THIS. He was totally in control, his playing precise yet heartfelt. The 3 of them grinned throughout the set, clearly loving what they were doing. And this composition - amazing "Introduction", indeed.
@94saabguy yeah, I remember. Wasn't this a Music Man body with a Telecaster neck? What is he playing here? His own model by Ibanez? Looks like it...... sorry I play the keys, don't know that much about guitars.
@aihoschema His old guitar was a Telecaster body with a Stratocaster neck, and a ton of different modifications. The guitar he's playing here is his model by Music Man.
One of the greatest attributes Mr. Morse has and the one I respect the most given that I'm a musician myself is his commitment to his audience/art. Yeah, rock n roll tales of ribaldry and destruction are fun for the book tours and talk shows. What I want when I go see a performer is exactly that, a performance rife with dedication, musicianship, professionalism, and some raw energy. No pretense here, I love hectic outright emotion too, but no drunk/high asses who can't recall their own music.
@bigtimmy1100 Morse also mixes it up with his fans at every concert. Met him many times after his shows and his genuine desire to please his fans shines through. Signed every damned thing I wanted him to - including my Steve Morse signature guitar and my early 70's Ampeg V-4 that I dragged in (60-70- lb.)!
This guy was formally trained and has practiced honing his technique. Yet, check the concentration for the outro starting at 2:35 . That's a true musician right there, folks. His total respect for the art form is why Steve will always have my respect.
@TheThim51 Jimmy Herring did as well, check out Morse's On The Pipe and then check out Herring's deadon version on youtube that he covered in a college baand wehn he ws like 23. Morse might still be my dead on favorite of the eighties guitar heroes, which would have included Vai , SAtriani, Johnson.
A stunning piece of music. As always, Steve makes this tune look easy (as the creator, of course he should), but if you try to play it yourself, it immeditaely becomes apparent how diabolically difficult it is to play. Subtle chord voicings, flowing arpeggios, massive string skipping, complex timing, and dozens of pickup and effects switches are just a smattering of what's required to pull this song off - and make it sound natural. Look at the Shawn Lane cover and see how he compares.
He is so good for many reasons, one of which is his work ethic. Most people are incapable of understanding how hard this guy works: He practices a few hours per day, plays 150-200 shows per year with Deep Purple (3-4/week for the last 16 years), composes/records/engineers new music, plays more dates with the Steve Morse Band in between, gives guitar clinics (free), has a family, flies his own plane, etc., etc. Mere mortal indeed. He's been working like this his whole career. Amazing fellow!
That's REAL music...with harmony melody and rhythm...something that RAP will never have...I am very biased in that I think commercial music pales sorely compared to Morse
@countrysamurai maybe- because crap rules the airwaves, is what makes for me at least, listening to Steve Morse all that much more special...no one touches steves playing--or compositional skills..never have and never will.
