Fuck Castro-he dissed Ngugi before the race. Ngugi had always beaten Castro in their cross-country encounters, but now the Portuguese turned to him and said, “You, you only know how to run in the bush."I am going to beat you thoroughly on this track.” Ngugi, understandably, was angry. “This annoyed me. In fact, it haunted me throughout the race. John Velzian told me to start the race and just go,” he says.
everybody remembers Coe, Ovett and Cram but right through the 80s Britain had Olympic-class runners through all the middle-distance and long-distance events. compared to todays shower of shite itlooks a damn special era. I doubt whether britain will have ANY runners in the finals of 800 up to 10,000 (would not bet against Mo farrah being injured when the time comes). We'll probably have 1 no-hoper in the marathon.
Ngugi told all the traditionalists who crawl 4200m and race 800m to shove it up their asses, and they did.
"Let's see you run a kicker's race in 13:11" he said, and they didn't know what to do. It wasn't in the script. Only Castro had the balls to try to catch him.
I've always remembered this race as Ngugi, Castro and a bunch of losers. They may have stole 2nd and 3rd from Castro, but nobody remembers them. I remember Castro chasing Ngugi.
@kozmon0t "Stole"? you mean, ran smart enough to actually get the medals?!? Baumann and Kunze? They were FIERCE competitors, with strength and withering kicks to match.
@VirenKickedPresAss They weren't fierce enough to go for the gold like Castro did. And hoping they would catch him from 20-30 back wasn't a good strategy. They were lucky.
What if Lasse Viren had gone for the bronze? Would anyone remember him? What would he have done at 3000m with Ngugi 50m ahead?
@kozmon0t I was fortunate to know Kunze, Baumann and Castro. Luck plays a part in every race and runner, but I know both of them Kunze and Baumann) are also calculating. I spoke with Kunze last week, and talked about this race- he said (and Baumann felt the same) with 600 to go, they knew they were going to catch Castro. Prior to that, they were racing for bronze. Going for gold is noble, but in the end, racing smart is also necessary- Castro and Pre would rather have the medal, I am sure...
@prporter1 Pat Porter was winning national XC titles when I was 16 or 17, so he must be older than 42. On the other hand I don't know why anyone would impersonate him... no offense...
If you're Pat Porter then you must have raced Ngugi at XC worlds at some point
@kozmon0t Yes, the first time was in Switzerland at World XC- No one even knew who he was- he just took off, and we gained on him, and then he hit it hard, and went on to win. He was amazing to watch- you never would have believed he was a great runner by watching him- but he sure could put it down!
@prporter1 You were in 6th and John Easker was 10th. There's a wikipedia page all about it.
You'd be more likely to be Pat Porter if you've seen a man wielding a giant insect at least occasionally. I think the real Pat Porter would know this. And it would be hard for an impostor to cheat.
@kozmon0t Good call- the announcer had it wrong. He said Bick was 10th. Lol.. I don't know anything about an insect. I must have been in race mode, or too exhausted at the end to really care...Anyway, do you what WR's I (Pat Porter) held..?
@kozmon0t Ok, but that's only one out of three :) Only born there- my mom went into labor passing through MN! Ok, and why did my mom go onto labor early...? Now, very, very few people will know this- only my immediate family, and me-
@prporter1 I'm not claiming to be someone from your immediate family or to know all your world records.
I didn't know whether Pat Porter grew up in Wadena or not, which is too bad, because if he had you could have proven you were him by identifying the statue of St Urho not far from there.
@kozmon0t Nope, born there, but left about a week after. Let me know if you find the other two WR's.....! If Wikipedia is the source of your information, well..... you know Wikipedia.
@kozmon0t Nope, born there, but left about a week after. Let me know if you find the other two WR's.....! If Wikipedia is the source of your information, well..... you know Wikipedia. WOuld you like a current pic of me and Hansjoerg Kunze..?
@VirenKickedPresAss Not me, I remember Castro. I don't even remember which one got silver, Kunze or Baumann. Silver and bronze are just two different versions of not-gold. If not for Castro, I wouldn't remember either of them except for Baumann's win in 92. Just like I can't say who medaled behind Aouita in 84, without looking it up.
Shorter was un-officially disqualified of his Silver medal, due to high level of Caffiene in 1976 Montreal Olympic. gold medal winner was un-officially stripped of the gold due to banned chemicals. Hence its possible 1976 Montreal Medals are: Lismont of Belguim, Kardon of USA and Viren of Finland.
poor castro, i really feel for the little guy. he showed so much guts in trying to go with ngugi, he tried so hard. it seems almost an injustice that he got no medal. the great Ron Clarke said when commentatinf "They shouldnt allow that, castro at least deserved a bronze." something like that is the stuff that happens in nightmares. really feel for him, he deserved much better.
John Ngugi raced one of the most perfect tactical Olympic finals of all time.Right up there with the memorable victory of Kip Keino in the 1500m in 1968.These guys are not robots. They can think on their feet and adapt to the situation at hand.Pure racing.Wow.Memories for life.Thank you. P.s. He also won 5 World Cross Country Chamionships over 12km.

This is the greatest 5000 ever in an Olympics
Ngugi told all the traditionalists who crawl 4200m and race 800m to shove it up their asses, and they did.

@prporter1 Castro didn't get the silver or bronze, but he won glory - he tried to win. Nobody else tried to win.
I think both Prefontaine and Viren would have tried to catch Ngugi too.
I thought you might be Pat Porter, but according to your profile you're a bit young to be him.

At the time that Viren competed blood doping was not actually against the rules.

@woodskier get your facts strait. shorter was clean. viren was my hero but he admits now and then of blood doping.
brianpcurran 2 years ago
Viren NEVER admitted to blood doping; it's a BS statement that nobody can ever prove, not the least of which includes yourself.
YiftertheShifter1 2 years ago
I think Viren was 5th, not fourth.

@woodskier I am pretty sure you can't be unofficially disqualified or stripped of medals either it's official or it didn't happen.

Ngugi ran his 59 to 60-second laps early
enough to make the other runners feel that
he would fade later. Either they lacked the
fitness or the courage needed to win.
I'm sorry for Castro who lost his "certain"
silver medal in the final 10 to 20 metres
and even lost the bronze medal. Baumann showed his fierce final kick
that helped him to win this distance in
1992. Kunze rarely ran well after this race.
Maree and Buckner ran mediocrely.
