  • I heard somewhere that butterflies can't see their own wings. This means they have no idea how beautiful they truly are.

  • 'lepidoptera is the most beloved order of insects'....... hmmmmm, i wander what charlieissocoolike would have to say about this.......

  • impressive prose, hank. today you have john a run for his money.

  • I was really enjoying it until all the butterflies died. At first I was sad, but thought, "Wow, even the dead butterflies floating in the water are so beautiful. They look like flowers." And then I saw a hornet EATING ONE. Good feelings gone.

    Although, Lemon! <3

  • How did you get so smart :(

  • ...Real trippy, Hank. :p

  • "Sometimes things don't need to be rational" needs to be t-shirt or something... i would purchase it :)

  • I have a weird fear of Butterflies and Moths. First Vlogbrothers video I've ever skipped 3 seconds in.

  • The butterflies kill the cabbages though. I'd rather kill them then let them kill the cabbage.

  • ORNITHOPTER

  • I laughed so hard with the MTG reference...

  • I hate all bugs, butterfly's..ladybugs ALL OF THEM :(

  • gosh i did not want to see that !

  • I suffer from Lepidopterophobia :( it sounds weird and ridiculous but butterflies scar the shit out of me. I get panic attacks because of butterflies ;___;

  • @ewmimsi I have Coccinellidaephobia... Ladybugs. Freakin' ladybugs. I feel your pain.

  • 8( so many butterflies dead

why hank why did you film the bee

  • haha +1 for Magic The Gathering reference

  • koalas are beautiful!

  • Hahaha,Direct quote " That's crazy". It might be right, except the small problem that Carl von Linné was from Sweden :D

  • @villew1 Perhaps it said "Det är galet!" and Hank just translated?

  • I'm actually terrified of butterflies... seeing all those dead ones did not help. Thanks for that one :/

  • the scales are for escaping from spider webs. they dust them so the web isnt sticky anymore and they simply bounce off (so long as they dont get wraped up first :P )

  • @geewizer33 You've got to be kidding, they die if they lose their scales.

  • Is that a doll of you in the background?

  • E=mc^2 Where Energy = mass times the speed of light squared. Which is most likely no longer a usable equation because of neutrinos :) :) :)

  • "Butterflies have scales!" I loved the way you said that. XD

  • smart tobuscus you are

  • @Vlogbrothers

Hank, please donate your rain to a fetish site or something. It's not intimidating, it's freaking attractive.

  • Yay The Oatmeal,2:28 so sad ....but kinda pretty.

  • Comment removed

  • I stopped being smart. My arm still hurts.

  • I hate butterflies more than anything. I just went to a Butterfly ... habitat.... thing... and I was so freaked out that in the fake jungle habitat heat I was hiding in my giant sweater.

My giant, over-sized sweater that is too warm to wear outside.

  • I love butterflies :D

  • I love both nerdfighting and The Oatmeal. But now that they love each other...... My life is complete.

  • Hahahahahaa i like the teddys on the shelf! :D

  • You guys are always making jokes about how ridiculously wild and small Montana is, but whenever you show footage like this, I think of my home in British Columbia, Canada. I live in a huge city in BC, but I do see a lot of beautiful nature regardless. Montana always looks so mountainous and natural -- it seems like a place I might want to visit someday.

  • I really want a "Lotta Butterfly Genitalia" shirt ha

  • Hank...Your brain is beautiful.

  • I don't know why, but I love this video :D

  • i will never stop being smart!

  • Put the bugs on me!!! LOL, damn.

  • as a student of entomology lepidoptera are very anoying to spread for your collection because if you touch the wihg their scales fall off.

There is an easy way to differentiate beacuse they are all in the same family, past that however, they are hard to distinguish beacuse there is much variation within the same species

  • LEMON! :D

  • My nerd side squealed when the MTG reference came up.

  • YES! I’ve done it! This is the first vlogbrothers video I ever saw (thank you charlie) , after watching a few more videos I decided that they were awesome, I then went back to the first ever vlogbrother video and have been watching through every video, I have now completed that, and I am a happy and total Nerdfighter :)

  • o-o My dad's a lepidopterist...it's not his job though, it's his hobby...

  • 3:44

    BEAUTIFUL!!!

    <3

  • This is a beautiful video

    Like if you agree

  • I tried telling my friend that too, that they will die if you touch them (pretty much) he pretty much just rejected me. um no they're not. then walked away.

  • PUT DAH BUGS ON MEH!!!!

    lol

  • wooooaaah hank got flow

  • this was actually incredibly depressing

  • its the motherfuking pterodactyl!

  • Change the music and a lot of that footage could pass for horror. Especially if you add a back-story about a gypsy curse that turns unsuspecting people into...

  • Ah, Hank, you had a poetic John moment there at the end. That makes me happy. :)

  • WOOT! Dr. Hovind! WOOT!

  • Butterflies are so awesome. I feel really calm in butterfly houses, even if it is FREAKIN' hot!!! Im doing a YTO challenge, please view this with your eyeballs :)

  • At 0:22 you had a tobuscus moment - heheh.

  • pterodactyl has a silent P, like in pteropod.

    good video

  • @JJandSrev He was kidding about the pterodactyl, don't worry. Hank knows how to pronounce dinosaur names.

  • those bees are wasps

  • The Magic reference....just made my day. Thank you.

  • Aw. I love how John inspired Hank to be poetic.

  • This was both very sad and disturbing >.<

  • this gradually became somewhat disturbing.

  • I just used your "not rational" quote in an exam for school (the essay I wrote even had to do with butterflies).

  • i might have cried a bit.

  • I have that magic card.

  • up until the butterfly grave yard that was very beautifal. but im still afriad of butterflies :D yes im afriad of EVERY bug. butter fly and lady bug.

  • Nature transform energy into elegance and beauty.

Life transform energy into capability of perception, while bring down its own entropy.

Entropy can be caused by perception of beauty.

    Just wondering...

  • 0:49 and also the guy that has a lot of dandruff

  • ornithopter....me and that card go back a long ways....that thing has won me so many games

  • I'M SORRY I'M HEARING EVERYTHING AWESOME YOU'RE SAYING ABOUT BUTTERFLIES BUT I'M ALSO SLIGHTLY FOCUSED ON THE SERENITY MAP ON YOUR WALL.

    EEEK.

(PLEASE EXCUSE THE CAPSLOCK I NEEDED A MOMENT TO FANGIRL)

  • PUT THE BUGS ON MEEE

  • "nature hates a surplus."--The Omnivore's Dilemma

  • Dune reference

  • That wasn't a bee! It was a wasp!!! and you didn't even need to look at her genitalia to know that!

  • Aaaah. This video is beautiful and interesting, but the one thing that turns my stomach more than anything else is bugs eating other bugs. Excuse me while I flail around and hide in a corner for a moment.

  • Yay Serenity! And YAY OATMEAL!!!! (Look at the source for the homepage. It's an mfin ascii pterodactyl.)

  • THATS CRAZY!

    Stop being smart! :D

  • Am I the only one who got so happy at 0:35 because he showed a Magic the Gathering card? OTL

  • this video is freaky because of how the butterflies drowned and had it's wings ripped off and are eaten by squirrels

  • hes so smart 0.0

  • PUT DA BUGSHZ ON MEEEEEE

  • I do not think that there is an inherent meaning to life, it's whatever meaning we imprint on the world... So if for you, if only for a slight moment, it's converting energy into beauty, then why not? If it makes your life more meaningful, more happy, then even if it's an illusion, then it's a beautiful illusion that perhaps could help illuminate greater truths that could not be found without that illusion of beauty...

Or maybe I'm just full of it. Very possible.

  • This was beautiful.

  • This is both the most beautiful, yet incredibly horribly creepiest video I've ever seen.

  • Ornithopter reference made me SO HAPPY.

  • Beautiful!!!!! Too much beauty!!!!!!!

  • That wasn't a bee it was a wasp. Bees drink nectar, wasps eat carrion and kill other insects like butterflies.

  • Actually I think "so too do" isn't gramatically correct; it should just be "so too...". GRAMMAR NERDS RULE!!!

  • EXCEPT LADYBUGS

  • You should do a nature documentary. This is the closest thing you did to one... I think.

  • Thumbs up if you were stalking Charlie's likes and it brought you here.

  • Browncoats represent!!!!! Epic poster. :)

  • Some days it seems to me like the purpose of life is to convert energy into beauty. And I know that that's not true, I know that that's not rationally true, but some days it's ok for things to not be rationally true. - Hank Green

    NEW. FAVORITE. QUOTE.

  • I once told some of my friends in second grade the fact that the sun in actually closer to the Earth during winter. They put an ice pack down my shirt in response...

Why must the young and fact-loving be punished?

  • @snorlax42 dude, thats so cool that you knew that in second grade. at any rate, its a sad world. just tell your kid that its alright to be like that and if everyone does that, the young and the fact-loving wont have to be punished. :)

  • I like philosophical hank

  • But... I'm Lepidopterophobic. Im afraid of the whole family of moths and butterflies.. O.O

  • according to my mom butterflies are the symbol of death at the hospital.. happy video slightly more depressing

  • The fact that you threw up a Ornithopter makes me love you even more, Hank. We should play Magic sometime.

  • That wasn't a bee, it was a wasp.

  • Makes me wonder if a lepidopterous has watched this video and rolled their eyes like 'o god butterfly genetlia - tell me about it!'

  • it may seem stupid, but i have a slight fear of butterflies. i can see them from a distance, but when they get close, or i see them on tv, i freak. Thanks, spongebob.

  • Black and burnt orange (at around 3:47) - is that a question mark? Polygonia interrogationis?

  • omg! firefly serenity poster behind! ahhh

didnt notice till now, unless it wasnt there before

  • i was revolted that you would even make a video about that. but once u started to talk about the energy, i smiled. and realized that its all for the better. so thank you hank. just thank you.

  • You've made science so poetic.

  • Oh god I hate it when there's a message at the end of a video. It's like watching Scrubs. *sad piano*

  • I wonder why so many butterflies died. Obviously there was an over population. Did they just die from nature taking it's course, and the over population had grown so large that they are just everywhere? Weird. I wonder what caused the over population. I grow up in a small town in the mountains of Colorado. Most of my family hunts, so animal populations are important. Considering I got a lot of my food growing up from them. Not from butterflies of course. :D

  • Butterflys creep me out...

  • SERNITY POSTER IS BEUTIFULL!!!

  • AAH! HANK! YOU USED "IT'S" IN THE VIDEO DESCRIPTION WHEN YOU SHOULD HAVE USED "IT'S"! D:

  • @timothy22597 YOU USED IT'S IN YOUR COMMENT WHEN YOU SHOULD'VE USED ITS!!!! :OOOOOO

  • IDEA: can you write a song about the taxonomic system of naming species? I feel like it has the potential to be a super awesome, SUPER NERDY song.

  • ok, that's it. I'm subscribing.

    you are awesome.

  • @TheSteini96

it took you this long? xD welcome to nerdfighteria <3

  • @staytuned2L337 haha, thanks :D

no, this was actually only the 5th or 6th video I saw

  • Charlie sent me here!

  • PUT ZE BUGS ON ME!

    XD

  • Hank Green,

    That was beautiful.

  • Though seldom, yes. That is true.

  • Those shots of the stream covered over by butterflies are tremendously beautiful.

  • @effgeeveeree

Even death can be beautiful eh?

  • Since watching this, I now tell everyone that butterflies have scales. Thought I'd let you know.

  • wow this guy just made me relize that im fucking dumb

  • My sister hates butterflies...she hates all bugs.

  • hank this made my day :)

    thank you

  • WHY are the beautiful butterflies dead?!

That kind of genocide would have ruined the trip for me. Such a disturbing and ghastly sight it is.

  • @AntimonyInSushi Everything has it's time, even the beautiful butterflies!

  • @Lisaasaurus ...I suppose you're right. It's fine if their time came and they died. But if something/someone killed them -- that's unacceptable to me.

I still don't know which it is in this video.

  • That was not a bee, it was a WASP!

  • "some days, it's okay for things to not be rationally true."

  • @sophie33star

I just made this my FB status, lol.

Seriously beautiful video all around, Hank. Luff you guys.

  • :D i actually knew they had scales!

kinda proud of my intimidating smartness right now.

also the dead butterflies were... beautiful. unfortunate, but incredibly pretty.

  • Unbelievably beautiful.

  • We don't get a lot of butterflies where we live in Virginia, only Moths. But i'm alright with Moths. =D

  • @Mondomeep102 do you have moth-man maybe hmmmm

  • LOL @ 0:26 "except ladybugs"

  • that looks awful - and disturbing

  • I would have been terrified if there were dead butterflies everywhere.

  • I haven't been able to watch videos for about a week. Dang, I missed you guys.

  • you reminded me of carl sagan somehow. maybe it was the beautiful speech at the end lol

  • the end of that video almost made me cry.

  • Ohmygod this is really cool! I didn't know butterflywings are made out of scales. And it's so sad to see all the dead butterflies there in the river ):

  • Rational truth isn't the only type of truth; nobody should feel ashamed for recognising truth outside of mathematically/philosophically/scientifically rigorous schemes. : )

  • Very poetically hilarious

  • love the oatmeal pterodactyl

  • @alexnackerud *bearodactyl

  • "Stop being smart!" baff

  • Magic the Gathering card! Teehee

  • Thats a wasp eating that butterfly not a bee.

  • At first I thought, "This is somewhat boring." then I relized how funny it was that he was vloging about dead buterfilys. Nice monologue!

  • Why wouldn't that be rational? I've spent a lot of time wondering about why we exist and I find myself considering this. That the world exists for the creation of beauty. Even in struggle and death there can be beauty and there is certainly beauty in what you witnessed today.

  • @eeli1 "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"

    /watch?v=dlRXV-WTZ2E (The Twilight Zone, 2002)

I suppose that there is no beauty, unless there is someone to perceive it.

  • Awww, my mom associates me with the butterfly and this video was incredible! I'm really glad you posted this.

  • -sigh.- I'm deathly scared of butterflies. Like literally I will scream in cry if I see it through the computer. THE THINGS I WILL DO FOR A VLOGBROTHERS VIDEO.

  • Is that a SERENITY poster behind you?

    Firefly FTW!

  • I think it's quite rational. What better purpose would we be serving?

  • @LoveGreenGaia

he means life has no evolved to be beautiful, it is not there to be beautiful. the purpose of life is simply to live.

  • Very nice ornithopter reference. That'll do pig, that'll do.

  • I would be so scared about stepping on one of those butterflies

  • This video was very Circle of Life of you.

  • OMG. You guys are hilariously awesome. Dammit. I need and uber smart brother that talks really fast like that.

  • Butterflies are my worst fear O_O

  • Most people beg to be covered with butterflies but my friend is actually terrified of them. xD

  • Leave it to Hank to see one of natures most beloved creatures dead and think something profound and beautiful.
