You forget that that for the most part of Its history Christianity has been an over the top affair. Its very symbol, the crucifix, is very melodramatic and emotional. The Reformation tried to make Christianity less theatrical and more cerebral, but it seems that Christianity always reverts back to ostentatious and trite rubbish.
