I don't just think it's her character in this that's supposed to be shy, i legitimately think she's nervous in front of the live audience ... so tell me, is this the fame hungry monster bitch that her little witch of a daughter made her out to be!?
That white oufit she's wearing looks horrible! And she looks horrible wearing it. And I agree about her acting, she seems a bit out of place on this show. But maybe that's the way it was written.
How do people just assume she was drunk? I think her character had a naturally nervous disposition. Joan was an alcoholic in real life though. <3 her.
OMG Joan is adorable here! So little and I love that she "SHOUTS" some of her lines when she's at the table with Lucy and Ethel. Legend. This what a lil' ol speakeasy looks like!!!!!!!!!!! HEAVENLY DAY NO!!!XD!
The irony of a known alcoholic asking for milk, kinda like Tallulah Bankhead's stunned reaction when Batman asked her for milk in the Batman series haha.
For those who say that Joan Crawford was a movie star with no experience in front of a live audience you should know that her career began on Vaudeville and went to Broadway before she ever went to silent films and then talkies. Point being, she began as an actress on the live stage in front of a live audience. The point is, Lucille Ball spent most of her career wanting to be Joan Crawford and she was paying homage to her inviting Joan on her show after 30-plus years of classic performances.
God, Crawford seems drunk in this! I remember watching a documentary about her and one of her co stars said that she had a very small body and a large head. I've never noticed that in her movies but I can see it here. Great fun clip though!
@texasghost That's ridiculous! She played 4 episodes of a soap to fill in for her bratty daughter Christina who was ill in the hospital. Crawford had plenty of money.
She does sound like Bette Davis... when did she get that "squeak" in her voice when she becomes shrill? They sounded very different in Baby Jane.... I don't know why Joan sounds like Bette Davis now.
"Hevenly..Day.. NO!!" LOL. I absolutly Adore Joan but this was certainly not her finest performance. She kinda sounds like Bette Davis Here, what with her Talking slow and all LOL
@TIPTON340 Joan drank on every set she was on for years. And the they call me a bitch line (as in Joan saying and they call me a bitch, when refering to Lucy) is a part of TV history.
I love this scene, she sounds as if she is impersonating Bette Davis......I bloody love Joan Crawford. I dont think she was drunk, because she knew how to handle her drink
@celinetakingchances OMG! she does sound like bette davis here, huh? amazing. she was probably drunk on rehearsals, but not here. she loved acting too much.
It's true, Lucy was a tyrant in the studio, even going back to "I Love Lucy" days. She even treated her friends gruffly: for instance, Jack Benny was her next-door neighbor and was a guest on her show; when Lucy was gruff with him, he turned to the crew and said "Somebody tell her she's already got the job!"
She and Vivian Vance had an on-off friendship; Vivian only appeared on Lucy's shows during the good times.
Yes... she had her issues... but she had a rough life...and she helped her family out in the middle of the depression. Yet... most major studios were run by run by men with iron fists. Harry Cohn of Columbia and Louis B. Mayer at Metro are infamous for they way they ran their studios and their stars. Lucy was the first woman to run a major Hollywood Studio... the former RKO Studios she and her then husband, Desi Arnaz bought and renamed Desilu.
Mr Mooney accidentally makes a gay confession by saying , "Girlfriend!! I will personally lay out the money.. Its Joan Crawford for goodness sake, shes got to have some fine looking young men she can hook me up with.."
i think joan was a good actress. anyone would have to admit she did in awesome turn in mildred pierce and whatever happened to baby jane. (she had to in order to hold her own with the great bette davis). trouble is, when it comes to being a woman, the more you gain, the more u have to give away. joan, bete, lucy were all very unhappy in their personal lives and it eventually caught up to them all in later years. all three were noted alcoholics.
She was a lot better than given credit and I yeild to no one in my admiration for La Davis. But Joan, while being more THE STAR (at MGM no less)gave solid performances and was box office until she was summarily dismissed as Box Office Poison by a bunch of theater owners. Joan took it badly but went on to win an Oscar anyway!
Garbo, Dietrich, Astaire, Hepburn and Crawford had major hits afterwards. It was basically a compalint about the studios making stale films and expecting just the name of the star to sell tickets to them.
Even Crawford-sheep would have to admit that she grew insecure during this era and beyond and it showed in the nervousness of her performances. It was difficult for such an ego to accept bit parts and tv sitcom appearances. Even she said she was humiliated that she had to be directed by Steven Speilberg because he was so young. She was also drinking at this time and I believe the lines about drinking and the obsessive cleaning gags are meant to make light of these facts so as to diffuse them.
Lucy did a fair amount of drinking herself, but probably not as much as Joan or Desi. Crawford is like a fish out of water here. She always seemed tall in films, but here her just over five foot frame shows.

I love both of them, I don't see why it has to be a competition. They were actually very alike, like Bette says in Whatever Happened To Baby Jane? "You mean all this time we could have been friends?" It's too bad rivalry had to get in the way of them getting along.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Joan was out of her league here she was good on screen in the early days of the "Starlet Era" but as time went on her old school acting faded and she looked like a fool with the REAL talents that were loved back then liek Lucy & Vivian and just anyone else who's on Earth or with God that's work is still played and enjoyed by each new generation Joan Crawford is not worthy enough to be called a "TRUE TALENT" she's what you call a "TEXT BOOK' actress!
She would study acting books in order to give the role life a real natural doesn't have to do that Bette Davis never had to do that if she was still alive today she's still be in major roles Joan wouldn't!
joan sounds like Bette Davis here very clipped, and Lucy made her miserable, for everything inc. her dancing, lucy was a very focused person but she too was a heavy drinker, also in the later episodes lucy is always looking over at the Q cards
According to Lucie Arnaz and close friends,Lucy liked to drink but wasn't a drunk. Lucie said her mother was too much of a control freak to let anything or anyone control her, including alcohol. She was entirely focused on her work and her show, every aspect of it, expecting complete professionalism from everyone involved. As with Tallulah Bankhead a decade earlier, when Joan showed up on her set intoxicated, she was furious. But when it came time to shoot at the end of the week, she did fine.
thanks mr. you put that very well, I think I was speaking of later when Lucy had nothing to do - or so it seemed, she sipped is what I have read, one thing , If you believe Crawfords b.date she would have been only 3 years older than Lucy, when I see Joan at this point I don't recognize anything , and I have seen almost all Crawford films from THE BOOB TO TROG

If Lucy was a b like someone here says they said she was, Vivian Vince was an excelent friend because they remained friends for life.
She was tough becuase she had to be as a woman and a leading one, even more than men.
IF she was too mean that is bad but they say it was more she was a perfectionist.
