For those who say that Joan Crawford was a movie star with no experience in front of a live audience you should know that her career began on Vaudeville and went to Broadway before she ever went to silent films and then talkies. Point being, she began as an actress on the live stage in front of a live audience. The point is, Lucille Ball spent most of her career wanting to be Joan Crawford and she was paying homage to her inviting Joan on her show after 30-plus years of classic performances.

i think joan was a good actress. anyone would have to admit she did in awesome turn in mildred pierce and whatever happened to baby jane. (she had to in order to hold her own with the great bette davis). trouble is, when it comes to being a woman, the more you gain, the more u have to give away. joan, bete, lucy were all very unhappy in their personal lives and it eventually caught up to them all in later years. all three were noted alcoholics.

But Joan,while being more THE STAR (at MGM no less)gave solid performances and was box office until she was summarily dismissed as Box Office Poison by a bunch of theater owners. Even Crawford-sheep would have to admit that she grew insecure during this era and beyond and it showed in the nervousness of her performances. It was difficult for such an ego to accept bit parts and tv sitcom appearances. Even she said she was humiliated that she had to be directed by Steven Speilberg because he was so young. She was also drinking at this time and I believe the lines about drinking and the obsessive cleaning gags are meant to make light of these facts so as to diffuse them.
