Yes a Covenant is a Promise and there is nothing wrong with Covenant - As a matter of fact every Covenant that God made with man - he did not break - however man broke most his covenant's he made with God - Yes he paid for sin - a debt he did not owe but we did and he paid it in full - because of the debt being paid we can now stand before him and receive all he has for us - If we are in Christ God doesn't see sin he sees Jesus - you see God could not and cannot look upon sin

In the old testament under the old covenant - the Jews had to go up once a year to get their sins forgiven - the blood that was used was the blood of bulls and goats ( But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year For it is impossible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins) Hebrews 10:3,4 - the blood of bulls and goats could only atone or cover - JESUS BLOOD IS MUCH MORE POWERFUL THAN THE BLOOD OF bulls and goats - It is powerful enough to take it away!

Atone means to make amends for something, or atonement would be a compensation for something. i.e. Jesus' blood being the compensation(or atonement) for the wrong doing of sin.
