spain conquer the philippines for 325 years and the americans occupy the P.I for 77 years. how i know this cause my family told me. i am an american/filipino.
I also would advise visitors to the Philippines to go to the Tagaytay Highlands. The view of Lake Taal and the volcano is very beautiful. There are a lot of nice shops in town and some very good bakeries. Be prepared for the malls to be very large in Manila, especially the Mall of Asia. Also, go to Baguio City if you can. It's in the mountains and the weather is a lot cooler.
I stayed at the Shangri La resort in Cebu. If you can afford it, I definitely would tell you to stay there. It's a 5 star resort with tons of great restaurants and a nice beach and swimming pools
@mybigbearron moreover, mindanao has never been a spanish territory (except zamboanga) so no, sir, conquer was not the right word. the revolution was going stronger when the americans came. they won the war by "default" so to speak.
@mybigbearron nice vid you have here. quite informative and i'm glad you like my country. on a side note, i was born in the island of mindanao and spent the frist 16 years of my life there before moving out to go to college. i just want to share some corrections, as you've said you're not a historian or journalist, TAGALOG is not a modification of the spanish language. tagalog is more related to a malay language just like what salG0217 said. and yes, occupied is more appropriate than conquer.
Hey I have been thinking of moving to the Philippines as a way of retiring extremely extremely early. I planned on using my GI bill (I'm military) and going to one of the better schools for 3-6 years while trying to find a nice cheap place to live. I guess my question is after my 6 years of living the good life is up what amount would set me for a very long time before i would need to work. Long time = +10 years... I have tons more questions but i thought that would be a good start.
@CharlesNauck that would depend on what school you want to go to and where in particular you want to stay. do you plan to stay within or outside metro manila? are you going alone or are you bringing your family with you? just some questions you need to consider. standard of living within metro manila is more expensive compared with that of the provinces. oh well, bet you know that already. good luck to you :)
I understand that. I am looking more for a range. I was thinking of starting off in Manila because of the University of Manila (which seems like a very good secular school). My GI bill will give me about 1400 a month for 36-48 months. After i finished i planned to move to a sleepy city close enough to fun but far away from expensive cities. I would be happy with a small bar/home as my source of income. If it was much bigger i would rent out.
@CharlesNauck didn't see your other post while writing my reply earlier. may i ask what you want to study? is it for a degree course or just short courses? if you want to finish early then might consider schools offering courses on a tri-semestral mode. i believe you wont have a prob looking for a city not too close nor too far from manila. try looking at the cavite or laguna areas (southern area). nice places and not too expensive. hope that helped.
Oh i have a buddy that looked into my plan and got extremely excited and wants to do the same so i may have a co-owner depending on whether or not he follows through. But no wife or kids... I figured i get them in the RP.
@CharlesNauck sounds like you have it worked out already. have you picked out a school already? usually, classes here start every june for the 1st sem and nov. for the 2nd sem. might as well choose the school earlier so you could make arrangements. glad you have a friend who might go with you. best of luck to you both and hope you find yourself a lovely wife :)
Thanks for introducing Philippines to the world. I'm an English teacher here in South Korea but I'm hundred percent Filipino. Soon I'm going to be a Korean and totally give up my citizenship. Thus, the spirit of being a Filipino will remain in me forever despite how poor Philippines is.
Big Bear, I enjoyed your video and I'm jealous of your living there. I've been there three times, once to Zamboanga and twice to Sorsogon City. The Filipino's are the most beautiful people I have ever encountered. Modest, humble which you also seem to fit perfectly. I hope to God my wife and I can eventually retire there and if and when that happens I will try to look you up. You seem like a great guy and thanks for your vid.
This is the basic response to you from my Filipino wife born and raised in Sorsogon City, arrived in U.S. in 2002. "TAGALOG" IS the main language of the Philippines!! Next, What takes place before occupation? Duhh!!! Governmentally speaking the U.S. occupation did have a strategic purpose. However, for General MacArthur it was a personal undertaking for love of the Filipino's!! THAT is what Fil's are greatful for!! What is your purpose for your comments anyway?
I have read that in liberating Cuba from the Spanish, Then U.S. president McKinley was manipulated by some over zealous men like Theodore Roosevelt, Henry Cabot and others to keep on going and boot the Spanish out of the Philippines as well. The U.S. occupation should have been short lived however, it was extended to protect American interests in the region. From what I remember, both business and political. That's what I remember from the book..'In Our Image" By Stanley Karnow. It's a good one.
@salG0217 The author of the video was just trying to point out that the Filipinos never really saw the Ameicans as invaders and they never really built up any hostility. The hostility you see now from Filipinos is from the Communists and Muslims. Filipno buddies of mine have confided to me that they wished they just stayed a territory just like Puerto Rico.
Philippines is good for visit, but make sure you have a native with you to prevent any untoward incident. do research first before going there so you can utilize the best of your 21 day vacation wisely.
hey big bear, how do you find the relationship between the Christians and Muslims in the Phillipines? im new to your vids, gonna c/o your channel right now, but good job
Honestly, I've spent most of my time in Luzon, and I can't say that I've witnessed anything that would enlighten me about it all. At various ports in the West Visayans regions I saw government signs prohibiting pork products, but that's as close to the dividing line as I've been, and it really didn't give me much with which to answer your question.
@1jedimonk1 My suggestion: stay away from Muslim areas like Zamboanga , most parts of Mindanao except for Cagayan De Oro, Davao or Bukidnon. Muslims there are like Muslims everywhere, they're tame until they get to be about 10% of the population and then they start imposing Sharia, etc.
I wish I would have heard this before 2001. I took my first trip to Zamboanga in 2001, ended up stopped at a military checkpoint at 10:30pm in which I became the sole focus for more than 30 minutes. They conducted their debates in their language which seemed to be comprised of disagreements and arguing amongst them. I know today I am probably lucky to be here as that was close to the same time of the Burnhams kidnapping. Much to be said for common sense which I have lacked.
And yes, English as well as Tagalog is the official language of the country. Spanish was dropped from the constitution in 1986 by then President Corazon Aquino to save money .....
The Philippines is a country that could have been. It has great potential, but the nation is gripped politically by the powerful Catholic church. It pretty much has to approve all government laws passed behind closed doors. There is rampant out of control population explosion that has the blessing of the Church despite government attempts to control it. Only an official declaration of SECULARISM can the country survive. Puritanical ideologies must be adopted while dropping Catholic work ethics
What is the banking system like in the philippines, and can i open an account in the philippines? With so many people out of work, there must be a lot of crime. Is it safe for a foreigner, and have you ever been mugged, or beaten up in the philippines? I am from Great Britain.
Only legal residents can open banks accts. I've never been mugged, robbed, nor beaten up in the Philippines. Common sense has served me well, and I've many friends who look out after me.
Generally, foreigners are not allowed to work there. Given that unemployment there is over 50%, that makes sense. However if an employer has invited you there to work, then it makes sense that it would take care of the red tape for you.
My USA passport allows my stay in the country to last 21 days. I can extend my visit to total 59 days (including the first 21) through an immigrations office/officer by completing required forms, submitting a copy of the page of my passport with the current admission stamp, and paying the required fee.
After that, I can extend for 59 more days by repeating the application/fee process.
I can keep doing that indefinitely provided that I leave the country (to any other country) for at least 24 hours. Then, repeat the entire process.
A lot of people do that by the way.
I recommend seeking an immigrations office in a province rather than a large city like Manila. As your gf to locate one. I know there is one on Borocay beach.
so,you went to the peens to fuck young boys, right??????????????????????,,die dirty cunt,,and it's pronounced,,,tagalo,,thick yanky twat,,how long you been there man??

Hi Ron and Lil bear. Thanks for your informative videos. What is the health care system like for citizens? Is there a universal coverage or private health insurance? Is treatment expensive if you have to pay out of pocket? How will that work out for you Ron when you retire there?
@infjcub THere is public healthcare which is horrible. There are private hospitals and private doctors who are excellent. The same in all countries that make the mistake of socializing their medicine. If you're a foreigner and get sick ... go home. If you need routine help .. just get out some cash.
Christianity and Islam are dominate. Lots of Catholics and Church of Christ. Smaller numbers of Baptists, Pentecostals, Mormans, Jehovah Witnesses, International Church of God, etc.

I have an international rate with AT&T...16 cents per minute. Besides that, we make use of the internet and text messaging. Using his sim card, he can call me at about 20 cents a minute.
