@187ichiban I totally agree... even if just ever so slightly. Caruso surely has some recordings that are better when it comes to Italian opera (not this one!). After all, they're too different to really tell.
@187ichiban: No doubt that Fritz was a great tenor and almost as great as Bjorling. I say ALMOST because I've never heard anything by Fritz that eclipses Bjorling's 'O holy night' and a few other popular pieces.
Also listen to Caruso's 1904 versions of 'Una furtiva lagrima' - 'E lucevan le stelle' - 'Recondita armonia' before declaring that Fritz can outdo Caruso. No tenor was as complex as Caruso and nobody bared his soul better. Caruso even soared above the tinny recordings of his day.
Ahh!!! such a nice voice, how sad he left us so soon!!!!. Very charming and warm man; we meet him at the end of 1959 at Düsseldorf. He was young and florishing, even if we heard him sang most of his repertoire in german, he does it very well indeed in italian!!! Bravooo Wunderlich,Bravooo Kentoo48!!!!!
well rhythmically it may not have matched up but it might have been his own interpretation of what happened in the scene. sometimes things like that are a little frantic and unexpected.

The Questa was on an LP with La donna e Mobile and other arias from Italian opera that I bought in the 60's in Chicago, long out of print now but maybe re issued on CD.

@forallyouknow Well, this comment is a year late but if you are still interested, Wunderlich did sing "Questa o quella", and although it's in German (and I don't even understand German) it really is a remarkable rendition. I think they put in the album "Fritz Wunderlich - Der große deutsche Tenor".
dedico esto a Sor Flaminia, Padre Higinio Paoli, Sor Luz , Sor Teresa Brisuela, Sor Maria Carlo, Sor Irene Mejias, Sor Enriqueta, Padre Felipe de la Cruz sacerdotes y monjas italianas/os y españoles que surcaron la juventud cubana.

I'm late to find this excellent upload. I really must pay attention to what's going on elsewhere. CraigFrancisSoto always sums up Fritz's attributes as expertly as anyone. I'm always grateful to him and to you Kentoo for your work.
Che bella voce! His beautiful timbre, coupled with his great technique, seamless legato, and wonderful way he places his vowels(in front),would have made him a natural for the Italian repertoire. What a great shame he died just weeks before his scheduled debut at the Met.Without a doubt,he would have been a BIG success. One of the great lyric tenors of any era.Bravissimo Fritz!
For myself, until recently my favorite tenor was Beniamino Gigli, although I consider Enrico Caruso the best singer. Thanks to you tube I recently heard Fritz Wunderlich and I find his voice as good as they get. Mario Lanza, Nicolai Gedda, Jussi Bjorling, and Beniamino Gigli, all at one time were my favorite singers.I listen to Fritz more than the others now because up until two months ago I had not heard him. The Cadenza in this particular recording is as good as it gets
I think Fritz might even have ever so slightly better control than Lanza... at least, comparing their recordings of this aria... but Lanza's voice is more powerful and full. I too was not familar with Wunderlich until relatively recently, I first heard him on a local classical music station and new I had to hear more.
I cannot take anything away from Mario's quality of voice.... it is one of the most beautiful that I have heard. His control I found to be lacking as is demonstrated in la donna e mobile. I have wondered why he never recorded the most difficult aria to sing"Il mio tesoro" from Mozart's Don Giovanni. Fritz by the way has one of the better renditions that I have heard. In my opinion John McCormack's is the best
I agree his control was not exeptional. (at least not on this aria) His strengths far outweigh his weaknesses though IMO. There are many things I wish he would have recorded, but since he died at 38 who knows what he would have recorded. He could have had at least another 5-10 years of prime singing if his health hadn't declined.
The article about him on Wikipedia has been significantly updated (finally) and includes a wonderful shot of him talking to Richard Tucker. Cool.
Mario has given us probably some of the finest operettas recorded in English. His vocal performance in the Student Prince has never been surpassed, in my opinion. As is the case of Fritz Wunderlich the world lost an angels voice just as it was coming into full bloom. It may be quite some time before the world hears voices such as these, again.
I agree. Incidentally I wish Wunderlich had recorded more in Italian. Do you knw of any others besides this? His pronunciation seems fine to me... it's nice to hear the standard arias in German but most of them sound better in their original languages (in my opinion.)
Fritz has recorded Funiculi Funicula, Tiritomba, and Mattinata in Italian. All are on Youtube. there are others but i dont know what they are. I agree that we become accustomed to hearing these arias in a specific language... for instance Fritz performed The Barber of Saville with Herman Prey and sang it in German.I first heard it in German and the original Italian seemed a bit off when I listened to an I Italian rendition recently
The only foreign tenor who can sing this in Italian.
