@pigeonbreathhed Ok, don't wanna argue, I just don't like when somebody insults famous singers :D Of course there could have been better performer for this who could have sung the highs better, but Elton's voice is amazing when he sings his own things like "Candle in the Wind", there his voice really stands out. :D
@pigeonbreathhed Elton has AMAZING voice... If all the performers in the show would have sounded like Freddie Mercury, there would have been nothing special... I love Freddie's voice and he is my musical idol but don't diss other singers, Freddie was more like tenor, while Elton's voice has aged and lowered into nice sounding baritone. What would Freddie and Queen's other members say about a fan who insults their dear friend?
Elton pulled it out his own way and he did it nicely. RIP Mercury
yup! Tony Iommi played on a couple of songs during that show (in no order, The Show Must Go On, Stone Cold Crazy, I Want It All and Hammer To Fall if memory serves me right)
man he beat freddy by far !he sing sclear and strong!freddy u cant call singing he cried with horrible notes!but though he was great!!Elton and michael jackson are the only singers !
Elton John truly did do this song justice. Supposedly he was a close friend with Freddie and was visiting him often at the end. I am sure he has lost many friends to AIDS. This would be a very emotionally charged performance for him. I say BRAVO !!
I love the song, and I think Elton did a great job vocally, but when he sings it he doesn't have an ounce of cool. Freddie always had that special aura of self esteem, on Elton it just looks like he's trying to fake his confidence.
binary - perhaps the reason he looks like he's "trying to fake his confidence" is because a few months before this performance he lost a really good friend....ie, Freddie!
Give the man a break...he did an awesome job! Of course there will never be another Freddie Mercury...but Elton did a great job with this song!
God bless him...the remaining members of Queen...and the rest of Freddie's friends who put on this concert in his honor to raise money for the terrible disease known as AIDS!!!!
Well I know he was a close friend of Freddie, but that doesn't matter. I'm rackin' on his performance on stage, not his voice or how he interprets the song. I'm saying Elton sings this just great, but his presence on stage totally sucks. It's just awkward and stilted. Like a bad actor he's trying to put on Freddies confidence and totally fails. I've seen Elton give WAY better performances than this.
Celine Dion's version can only compared to Freddie. Freddie was the best singer ever had been living on earth.

@pigeonbreathhed And both vocalists, Freddie and Elton have something that other doesn't have, most important is the feeling they make us feel :)

We could clone him, but it still wouldn't be the same. I don't think anything could take the place of the real Freddie.

when was this performance?
tvaughan807 3 years ago
I'm pretty sure that this performance was the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert held in April of 1992.
I say that because I know Elton mentions how Queen had been working for their ass off and because of how thin Elton looks.
Also Brian Deacon is with them and aside from a performance in 1997 with Elton as front, he didn't play with Queen again after the tribute.
It's also night and seeing as The Show Must Go on was very far down the playlist at the tribute I think that's evidence too

you need to take into account that freddy was a high powerful tenor and elton is a strong baritonr with slight retetentive tenor tendencies.

I'm sure that a guy like him used to performing at a piano is probably a bit uncomfortable standing and singing. Still great job though.
