  • This game had pretty good Co-op multiplayer for the SNES era. If you had the controller, you had a hobbit to play. It was damn hard to hit those fast moving wolves with tiny, little daggers though.

  • i actually played this game a lot way back when, i got to moria but couldn't figure out anything past that, plus i dont think legolas can actually fire any arrows or attack, or i didn't figure out how.

    derp

  • It was about 7 years ago when I came across an SNES emulator, found this game again, and recorded all the music. Where was the youtube link, back then. LOL. Thanks for posting. After all these years, I still have every note and change memorized...

  • ooo i LOVE this game. its not as bad as people said. I waited for years for volume 2 to come out but it never did.. I have loved Lord of the Rings since i was a kid, this game and the books started it.. im 24 now... still love it :) such a familar little tune. makes me smile

  • I knew about this game!!!!! We had it, and the music was the best game music I've ever heard, in some cases. To this very day I still frequently play those songs on my irish whistle.

  • they should of opened up the first movie with this song!!

  • I loved playing this game because of the music and because of the HUGE areas. I remember when I went into Moria, I thought I would never come out again.

  • This was an awesome game, besides the glitches and passwords randomly not working, but all around it was worth beating I have at least 4 or 5 times

  • I remember playing this game as a kid it wasn't as great as secret of mana but I still loved it also I'm not a fan of lord of the rings my father bought this for me and I still like it, even though its way to hard but I do recall once I did beat this game or I think I got near to the end.

my most memorable part of this game is proberly with thoose dark knights if I remember correctly they kill you in one hit and the caves used to scare the shit out of me.

  • @xRocketzFighterx lol they did, you never knew what to expect, like if youve already been to the area before or if a troll is gonna pop out randomly!

  • @kickthejamz

lol thoose trolls always scared the hell out of me especialy if I was low on health because no one could get revived if someone dies they stay dead *gulp*

  • Game sucked from start to finish, was nothing more than aimless wandering around vaguely Tolkien-esque environments with terribly stupid AI comrades. There, what, 5 enemies in the game? First wolves, then bats, then Barrow-wights, then orcs, and finally a few trolls. And the Balrog, which also sucked. And then the game ended. There was something about collecting all the gems too. I tried as a kid but it was honestly just a struggle to escape the Shire.

  • @gyromancy2

actually no, I didn't! Nowadays I would have used gamefaqs.com to plow through it quickly, but when I played this I didn't have internet (this was over a decade ago I'm sure - I was a lot younger). Good old fashion persistence was my guide!!

  • one of my favorite melody of all music that exists. I do a good rendition on my recorder :)

  • I have an almost compulsive need to whistle when I'm board (don't judge me!) and this is my go-to tune.

  • I loved this game.. maybe it was cause the music was so bad ass :) But i really loved playing it with my buddy back in the day! haha.

  • didnt even know they made a snes game

  • as a kid this game was waaay too hard for me...dungeons were huge and complicated...you never knew where to go and what to do and another thing...the passwords were about 100 digits and written in this retarded caligraphy font that its impossible to read....but the music in the game was killer

  • I remember this game and the music clearly, even tho that was probally 10 or so years ago.

  • I never made it out of the damn shire when I rented this ages ago...But the music was fantastic for that.

  • I remember a review of this game in the biggest game-magazine in my country back in the good old days. It got 5 out of 100 and the end comment was: "Tolkien rotates in his grave" :)

Is the game really that bad?

  • It was a pretty awful game. The hit detection is terrible, your attack is slow, and your companion's AI is incomprehensibly stupid.

But god, this really is one of the best video game themes of all time.

  • So that's where the "...rotates in his grave" comment originated. And if it's really that bad, then I'm glad to have missed it. 5 out of 100, sounds really bad.

  • @ornvik481 tolkien would of only liked the sound track...it does no justice to the books of course

  • you know where i can download it?

  • half the LOTR games are playable.

LOTRO doesn't count since it's an mmo.

  • This is actually the game that made me fall in love with folk music.

  • @nighthawk41 Now that i think about it, this would be where i would have first started liking it as well.

  • this game had shitty pathing AI though for your team mates...sucked when they got stuck on a rock and then proceeding raping by a hopping wolf.

other than that, yes this game was under rated.

  • @art11art12 lol specially when you had a full party and instead of trying to do your mission your baby sitting everyone else! damnit pippen cant you just follow!

  • they should've made this game into an turn based RPG.

    It would've done ALOT better.

  • *Sigh,* a disappointing game with a brilliant soundtrack... like Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness, and Starfox Assault.

  • Wow, thanks for posting this!! I felt exactly the same way you did about the game; it was AWFUL to play, but I definitely enjoyed the music, and even started the game a few times just to listen to the beginning theme, then immediately shut it off. : )

  • altough the gameplay was one of the worst there ever was, the atmospheric sounds and music were awesome

  • I liked this game actually. Sure, there were a lot of flaws in terms of development (it not telling you what to do, the AI partners dieing all over the place, the weapon needing so much accuracy, and most importantly, the huge confusing maps), but in general this game was so charming simply because of its atmosphere.

The beautiful music in it was one of those what made sat atmosphere, actually.

  • Oh yes.. the AI is very retarded, due to it NOT DEFENDING ITSELF..

I agree though, the game itself is charming due to the atmosphere the music creates.

And the hoops Interplay jumped through to get the music right, was surprisingly complex..

The SPC700 DSP can only have 64KB worth of music and instrument data at a time.

To overcome this, they used techniques known as "streaming" and "sample swapping."

That is, they had to feed the instrument and music data to the SPC700 DSP 64kb at a time.

  • Nice music, but this game is a shit!

  • it was good and bad. on one side it enabled you to play using a multitap with friends. not many games went past 2 players those days. a select few only ( secret of mana anyone) but on the other hand they could have spent more time on it. Legolas didn't even have arrows hence could not attack the whole game. wtf?

  • I always hated this game, it was terrible to the max. But I would plug it in just to listen to some of the songs. Good tunes they were.

  • ahhh lotr!!! this game was so awesome! im so sick 2 death of games now a days. there way 2 easy! this game was incredibly hard (considering there was no map) plus the music and ambience is awesome!

  • This game was tough; but it had TONS of atmosphere.... something I kinda miss in the modern LoTR games. :)

  • worst fucking game ever that was actually meant to be a game

  • Heard of Mario is Missing? Is it worse than that?

  • Its a tie.

  • Wow, than this game must have been boring as crap.

  • Sorry, but I have to go with Big Rigs.

  • The game may have not been very good, but it was challenging! so, for all gamers out there who like games with a challenge, then this is perfect! mix in a love 4 lotr AND the wicked soundtrack AND absolute maddning difficulty....its not so bad

  • lazy gameplay, but a great soundtrack it had indeed

  • thank you very much ........ now that I am playing good so far! thanks again ... good music

  • I didn't know this exsisted either until a few weeks ago when I went to a Play N Trade for the midnight release of Resident Evil 5. There it was. I said, "huh, didn't know that existed." And here it is on this playlist. How very interesting.

  • This was a god awful game. It's a shame the soundtrack was largely ignored due to it's subpar gameplay.

The only good thing about me owning this piece of crap is I pawned it off during the LOTR craze a few years back. People didn't even know a LOTR game existed for the SNES and I sold it for $150.

  • i remember hating this game so hard that i used to sit in the shower..cold...alone....crying... ah well..

... still, i have to agree that the music is awesome for a nintendo game =D

  • What do you mean awesome for a Nintendo game...

Nintendo has always owned in the Music department...

And this song is awesome no matter what console it would be on...

  • the music awesome, but its good.

and well, alot of the games had awesome music, but alot of them had, what i could call; lame music =]

  • I have to agree with jondabomb. Nintendo's music has always been the highlight of its gameplay; that's why I don't care about graphics so much. I'm more concerned with the soundtrack.

  • well... i have played ALOT of nintendo games with what i would call annoying and lame soundtracks, and compared to other classic ones like zelda ect, they are not very well done :P

  • Good choice, the Music for Lord of the Rings was amazing. To bad the gameplay wasnt to die for : S.

  • Good music, too bad the layout was terrible, and the control and gameplay was even worse.

I don't what was more painful, playing with a controller or a mouse.

  • I hated this game with passion, but I never forgot the awesome music, sure is nostalgic to hear it again 15 years later.

  • I only got far in this game because I tried to force myself to like it because it was based off of one of my favorite novels. But I just couldn't! I got as far as the Mines of Moria and I just said "This game is really really really gay" then I stopped playing it.

  • anyone else get to level 100 and get reset back to 1 in this game?

  • That's a long time to go without looping too!

  • Wow this is really good. Never even heard of the game. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

You know it sounds like it'd be really fitting for Puzzle Quest. Now THAT game was addictive!!!

  • The Mines of Moria in this game are god awful, but with music like this, it makes the game worth playing.

  • omg i kno.....haha man that game is terrible but memorable.

  • I only got as far as freeing the people from the tree then I got stuck. This was a hard game.

  • what is the name of this fucking song

  • Wow. Pretty awesome.

  • Does anybody the official name of this song?

I once heard somebody at a museum (clothed in middle age garbs) play this song with a flute. Alas, I did not bother to ask the name!

  • Wow, 1 year ago... I dunno if it helps you. xD

The song has no official name. It's only in this game, as far as I know, and there never was an official music release to it.

Although there was another version of this game for the PC where parts of the music was used, as well.

  • the music in this game was amazing, too bad the gameplay was awful. I actually did beat this game all the way through, and too be honest, despite its flaws, it is still a very memorable game for me. I did in fact like it! lol.

  • I was always curious about that game. Did it ever end up getting better? And at what part did it end?

  • The maps for the game were just too overwhelmingly large and complex. They would recycle the same area maps so you'd have two different areas of the same cave, but the layout was exactly the same, so you'd get confused easily.

It ends with killing the Balrog. You'll notice on the book at the beginning of this video (and the game) it says "Volume 1". They probably intended a Volume 2 for the game, but who knows why they never got around to it. Not popular enough? I would have played it...

  • Ah, thats what I figured. It's a shame too, I feel this game had so much potential.

  • @BestSnesMusic

    It had multiplayer too!

So few SNES RPGs actually had multiplayer, and this one wasn't even documented. It just 'was'. I wish they had finished the last 2 games.

  • @itirnitii Me too, a year and half after its release I went to the store to check if Vol. 2 was available, sadly it wasn´t. Then when I was older I understood that Vol 2 never came to be because of Vol 1´s failure.

  • @itirnitii they actually did a Volume 2 but only for the commodore 64 sadly

  • @gamefluteplayer That's crazy, I remember actually seeing it in a pawn shop like 15 years ago and was tempted but I had just finished with the SNES version and had no desire for repeat torture.

  • @itirnitii I think there is more than one PC version for DOS....not entirely sure, but I know this is a conversion to SNES.

  • OH FUCK NO. I played this game.. went as far as fetching someone's glasses from the cave, did some more crap, had Sam ( i think... ) join me, only to have him DIE 10 minutes later, tried to walk out the village, and got killed by a wraith.

    but the music's good :P

  • how did you meet the wraith? O_o

  • i just walked out the village, and there he was, riding a horse

  • Yea, I had to try this game as well but couldn't figure out what to do in it. Meh, nothing would beat the book anyways.
