When this came out I had a 67 Mercury Commuter w/390. It cruised and looked awesome behind the wheel with all the Chrome Mercury was known for. If it wasn't for the fact it was a grocery getter I might have actually been a little cool. Sure wish I had the wagon now that Dad ran through a demo derby. great song.
I'm gonna agree with niklb here: Steve's "Mercury Blues" would be fine if I wasn't familiar with the David Lindley cover. By comparison, Steve never even gets the engine to turn over, while Lindley is FLYIN' DOWN THE ROAD! (Watch Amenhop's Lindley video.) Listen to Lindley rock it and ask yourself, "If I'm gonna put the top down and go cruisin', which would I rather hit the road with, Miller 's or Lindley's version?" Which one puts the wind in your hair?
R.I.P. to to my friend Dave Jerome, who loved his "53 Mercury. He always asked me to play this song on my record player when he visited with my husband and I
for all you out there i like all the remakes of this song including this one look up Mercury Boogie by K.C. Douglas he is the one that wrote the damn song stop picking on Mr. Jackson just because his was a hit
@MrBad440 I agree, but more than that ... I don't think he mucked it half as bad as Dave Lindley did. And with no disrespect directed at either artist ... Neither cover does the song justice. Bottom line: Mercury Blues will ALWAYS be Steve's.
Everyone should learn where a song is from first. Before making stupid statements. One suggestion, learn to appreciate it all.You can still have favorites .Learn how the song evolved .It is a lot more interesting and ......fun to.
I don't know about Miles Davis but this arrangement of Merc Blues is simply guitar heaven. Plain and simple - a clear vision of guitar sound good enuff for any decade.
David Lindley's version is a completely different take and totally worthwhile.
What an ignorant thing to say. Blues and country music are practically cousins. Besides, artists "cross over the fence" all the time. It's called being multi-dimensional.
No, David Lindley owns this song, and has done all sorts of cool and odd stuff with it. What Steve has done is add tasty change of pace; but the Mercury Steve sings about never runs out of gas or breaks down, and all of the ladies who ride in it are lovely and willing. David's Mercury is a great deal more real-world.
This is the only version I will listen too!! I put this CD in my Car when I go to Classic car cruises and yes it is in my 1970 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler 429 SCJ This band fits my car juuuuuust fine !! and yes it is cranked!!! I want to dedicate this to Steve Miller !! Perfect song for a perfect car!!!
You Alan Jackson haters are all alike. He writes 90% of the songs he sings, which is more than a lot of other artists. I like Jackson's version, and I think the people slamming him are being dicks. It's not like he's the only artist in history to cover another person's song. There's nothing wrong with his version, and quite frankly, I enjoy both Miller's and Jackson's arrangements.
Miller does an earlier version of this tune on the soundtrack to the movie "Revolution "(1968) . He also does "Your Old Lady". Both tunes are also on Lindley's first solo album
I play this song while at some the areas biggest car cruises while in my merc.
1970 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler 429 SCJ Black it is theeee baddest car I have ever owned and I dedicate to the great Steve Miller !!! Rock on brother Ron from Pittsburgh Penna
Alan is a great songwriter. I can't take anything away from hime. However, i felt his cover of this song was a brain fart. Miller owns this song, OWNS it. Blues based and the way it should be. Period. And I'm sure all royalties and the agreement are in place...Alan and his record company paid to use this song on his album.
Hate to bust your chops, but neither Steve nor Alan have rights on this song. Ford owns it now and it was originally written in 1949 by KC Douglas and Robert Geddins.
You took me literally. I should have been more clear....I meant that Stever Miller "OWNS" that song....as in, my opinion is that his is my favorite version, and the best i've heard (at least of the cover of that song since the '60s)....so yes, you are correct, KC Douglas / Robert Geddins wrote it and technically Ford (yikes) owns it now.
@glueforall No, David Lindley owns this song, and has done all sorts of cool and odd stuff with it. What Steve has done is add tasty change of pace; but the Mercury Steve sings about never runs out of gas or breaks down, and all of the ladies who ride in it are lovely and willing. David's Mercury is a great deal more real-world.
@glueforall Ford, the company that produced Mercury cars, bought the rights to this song (originally "Mercury Boogie") from K.C. Douglas, so if royalties were paid (i.e., if the song isn't in the public domain), they'd have gone to Ford Motor Company.
@glueforall I was 10 years old...I had 2 older brothers who would have killed to have this album. I was home with a horrible stomach virus & my Mom bought it to make me feel better. Hee Hee! They recorded from album to cassette for their Trans Am & Cutlass tape players...little sisters love to be envied! Even if they are in their 40's
It's called a cover, dickweed. Lots of artists cover songs, and it's perfectly legal if you get permission and give credit to the songwriter. And by the way dipshit, Steve didn't write it. It was written by two song writers back in 1949!
@shelton705 yes, but its a lame gay cover jackson does. growing with r nr it seemed all the country stars couldnt handle how successful the rocks stars were, they seldom had good words for them, If you cant do the song better then dont try.I believe jackson putshis name on this song as if he wrote it. at least in the vid his name is on it!!!! now the dumb asses that follow him dont know the songs history, the ole tell a lie and the lie becomes the truth.
@mikemoair of course i drive a Z3 so i dont really know about the quality of chicks you get with a mercury. a Z3 means im right unless you drive a mercedes, rolls, ferrari, etc
I play this song while at some the areas biggest car cruises while in my merc.

Lindley's and Alan Jackson's version sound similar. No soul. To me Steve Millers version
goes much deeper. That's what puts me cruisin down the road.

Steve didn't write but did do a nice version of it.
Alan Jackson butchered it. He's about as blue as the sun. He should stay on his side of the fence.
Listening to this makes me want to go drive my 66 Merc.
