Who thinks that the mafia dude actually set harold up at the end?! That he knew what was going on and was perhaps approached by the IRA and had to co-operate as he was in a forgein country with no hitmen or alibies! I'd love to right a sequel Lol!
Superb music. A superb film - and got the spirit of the times absolutely nailed. And a wealth of talent across the board. And hands up all those who would have thought that Harold was right... And that's a great pic up there of Hoskins from the unbearable last moments of the film.
If the US film industry ever manages to make a film of this quality, then the age of miracles will truly have arrived. Every aspect of this film is spot on - the characters are realistic human beings, the plot makes sense, it doesn't need CGI... I could go on and on. A cinematic masterpiece.
jesus.this still creeps up on me, probably because of the film,, but i am trying to work out if it would work as a seperate entity,,,,,, i think so,, well done francis monkman,
The best british gangster film ever made.To think they couldnt find a distributor, and it was going to be cut, sold to american tv,and dubbed. The dubbing caused bob hoskins to slap an injunction on it,saying it took away his performance(a petition of equity members was signed in favour of this,i believe)Then george harrison's handmade films bought it for£600,000 and distributed it.I first saw it,prob in the mid 80s in my teens, its in my top ten films of all time.
@zvictorone the IRA plot involvement, only comes to light in the 2nd half of the film,Hoskins finds out, when we do.Hoskins character doesnt fully appreciate what hes dealing with, and handles it the wrong way. They outwit him,and kidnap him at the end of the film.
Just got a few snaps of Bob (will upload to flickr soon). Must say this is the finest british gangster film ever and this fantastic ending theme to add the icing on the cake !!!
Yeh I hope the Yanks dont get their hands on this.... Has anyone noticed how much more real this is than the Hollywood rubbish.. Then again they dont have the history that we do..
i cant understand why youd wanna make a brilliant movie better, it cant get better. why dont movie producer work on movies that were terrible and make them better
Anyone anywhere who's ever seen this movie will recognize and remember it from this theme.the difinative British gangster film.just pray the yanks don't attempt a re-make.great post cheers
@groomercab Oooooooo !! That would be the worst thing ever. The remake of the Italian Job was bad enough, but a remake of The Long Good Friday would be disaster.

One of the greatest films ever with an unforgettable soundtrack, when this song first kicks in you know your watching something special. Very special. The films been dubbed the British Scarface but its so much more than that.
The final scene is a thousand times more powerful and the acting is extraordinary.
Completely agree, as soon as you hear the soundtrack you think 'wow, this is a classic.' Brilliant film, best gangster film of all time alongside 'Rise Of The Footsoldier' for me. The yanks just cannot make films like us Brits when we put our minds to it
@CelticSilurianTribe I Agree Its a great Film...The acting makes it Great ! & the final scene in the taxi is Top Quality....The expession on his face says it all !! He's knows Dead !
So cool. This guy knows what it is to be uncompronising, lover mothing nationalist. At an irish funeral the other day and all the friends looked frigheningly tough and , naturally cool.
I loved the score, personally. I can see why other people would hate it. A very grating score would have to be the one Johnnie To frequently employs in his film The Mission (which is still great, nonetheless).
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
what this moment of high drama needs is a descending riff of saxaphone...er... I'll say it one more time - the most appallingly SHITE score ever "written" for a film! Imagine what this film would have been with a great soundtrack.
Francis fuckin Monkman needs a good half hour in a small room with Razors.
Spot on, me old china. These little cants don't know how to behave proper. Be good to yer Ma, eat yer greens and if some waaanka facks wiv ya, fackin kill 'em! Ronnie & Reggie had it roight.....
If you're wondering...listening to these two minutes for two consecutive hours does not make them any less epic xD

Comes a very close second to "Get Carter" as the greatest crime film ever made and what music just magic
kawasaki5187 9 months ago
@kawasaki5187
Get Carter was let down by one person in my book - Michael Caine. Christ, how anyone can consider this bloke a good actor leaves me cold.
Hoskins, especially playing the role of a gangster, is totally believable. Caine meanwhile, is always 'boredom personified' in my view.
