  • Why are the owners home at a time like this & the trainer etc are with her.

  • @taykyl001 Probly cause they had tons of other horses to tend to. And in racing when you have all those horses your world doesn't revolve around one horse depending on the owner. its hard

  • @XoDonutxBreyeroX It doesnt matter how many horses u have, they are owners, im sure they didnt own that many horses, Ruffian was their best ticket etc.

  • @taykyl001 It was in the mile of the night as well. And obviously the trainer care morethan the owner

  • I wonder if they'd kept her longer then if she could of recovered and retired :/ RIP Greatest filly ever.

  • I hate pigeons now...

  • @foxglory123 Not pigeeons fault, have a look at the start again, plus she had a weakness.

  • So sad when she thinks she is still running :(

  • now this is one reason why I really dont care for horse racing.....poor ruffian

  • Poor Ruffian she was the best ever filly,

she was only 3 in our age that is about 17,

R.I.P Ruffian we will never forget you.

And what made me cry the most is that there was really no need for the Mach Race and, she was ahead when she broke down.

  • i cry at even the slightes horse thing like if they go lame :'()': not fair :'( IM STILLY CRYING

  • SERIOUSLY!!!!!!!! WHO KEEPS DISLIKING THE MOVIE!!!!

  • @flapjack200011 maybe its just the sad parts they dislike?

  • All she wanted to do was run. Atleast she can run as much as she wants now.  R.I.P Ruffian!! She's my favorite horse ever!!!

  • @fuzzymonster101 She was the best....

  • The trainer rocked that horse. That horse was so good because he and the carers actually cared about her. he knew when she shouldn't race although he expressed his opinion about this carefully, when she would be good without it, sad enough the owners didn't listen to him, they have to live with the guilt that their horse was nothing more and nothing less tthan just business to 'em.

  • That was a good trainer. He told them she didnt need that match race, she was good enough on her own. But that wasnt good enough for everyone else.

  • As you see these people are devastated they didn't think this would happen. Why? because who wants to have a thought about their horse breaking down like that. People will read a horses thought. Yes most of these trainers are greedy but as you see these people are completely devastated about what happened to her just like Barbaro.

  • :'( made me cry .... r.i.p xoxox

  • R.I.P Ruffian the reporters and some greedy people took your life but you will never be forgotten, you deservered better

  • If I was there,I would of put myself on top of her or put myself on the side of her legs to make her stop running,I wouldn't care wat would of happened to me,I would just tried to save her

  • of all the horses god has sent down. that lucky man got HER

  • if i knew that this would happen i never would have watched it, people dont learn that putting that much strain on a youg developing body will all ways have there consequences wether you see it then and there or later on it life. it just isnt right...

  • @toddles123wex I made my comments, but people think a less then 10% chance is a chance (NOT with a broken foot like that), WHY race them so young, & especially in a match race, NO Brains behind that decision. The trainer did have doubt, & the stupid owners have to live with what happened to Ruffian.

  • its a pity, they had to put her down because when she woke up, she got up and shattered completly her shoulder

  • ... i wouldnt have liked to see her foals have the same fate.

i made a mistake in that part of my comment

  • Ruffian had a genetic desease called "soft bones"

its makes the bones break easly when in condition of great pressure and heat

thats why she her legs broked, her father and mother had the same fate has her, 1 years after she died her mother died because of broken bone, her father had died before her too with broken bones

    its like she was cursed

i think it was good that she didnt have foals, i would have liked to see her foals have the same fate has her

  • this shit should be banned any sport where animals die in should be banned they force the animals behond their natural capacity for money its called animal exploration, its time to end this crap

  • @ukusapillage No horse no opinion :/

  • @ukusapillage after watch this movie until 8th part and then wrote crap comment like this, seriously?

  • ruiffan had some kind of bone problem it isnt normal a horse to break two legs, show lack of sttrenght, usually best runners have a heart bigger then usual but if they have bone structure probs. then they cant run like this, seabiscuit manowar and secretariat were perfect ruffian was really fast but her body couldnt take what her heart wanted, to fly with the wind, this makes her special shows the will

  • I am sorry if I sound dumb but I think she may have had a chance if they would have held her leg so she couldn't thrash like she did. But then again I don't know

  • if they had the technology then that we have today...we'd have mini ruffians running around =( I guess it wasn't meant to be...

  • what about sedation?

  • Comment removed

  • this is so touchin i really like de way them tired to save her

  • even foolish pleasures owner didnt want her to end like that he felt bad and it showed that he felt bad in the movie. rip ruffian!

  • At least her owner was nice enough to understand that there wasn't much more they could do for her and didn't want to put her through more surgeries

  • @marrylegs28 LOL If that was my horse I wouldnt b at home in my dressing gown waiting for a call

I would b right beside her side. Someone on here said "Well they gave her a chance" with a injury like that

there is no way she could have survived that. Dont get me wrong I love horses to death, but with a less then 10% chance, they should have put her out of her misery straight away. I have seen horses put down straight away for less. (Meaning less injury)

  • @taykyl001 less dan 10% there is still a chance. I love horses to death n if my horse have less dan 5% i would still try to save her. Yes she may not be able to race again but she can sure produce an offspring. N she would of survive if she had stop running love u girl

  • @Kendalmoon There are 2 things wrong with her having babies: 1: She couldnt stand the weight of a stud (unless artificial insemination kinda thing) and She wouldnt be able with how big she was AND having extra weight of a baby

  • @Kendalmoon No look at the likes of Barbaro & just recently Rewilding, no way, they gave her life for a few hrs in pain, not a break like that, Ruffian didnt stand a chance in the 70's & not now. Rewilding was eating grass right up untill they gave him the needle. U know the break when u see it. I luv horses too death, but I would rather them go quickly, then suffer mnths in pain.

  • There are horses out there, that are born to run.She was one,but it just wasn't how things were supposed to be no matter how much we dis like them. She knew she was a champion, and racing was what she was born to do.Rest in peace,Queen. <3

  • @Lovejumping12345. you are wrong.................. EVERYTHING WAS WRONG SHE WAS TOO YOUNG TO RUN LIKE THAT TOO YOUNG!!!!!!!!! may Ruffian Rest In Peace... R.I.P

  • @Lovejumping12345. You are wrong!!!!!!!! Ruffian could of lived if racing was never invented........ and horse racing is Abuse THE HORSES LUNGS BLEED!!!!!! WHEN THEY RACE! DIDNT YOU KNOW THAT!? Its tourcher to them.. What if you were a horse after a race.. And your lungs are bleeding your legs are bleeding!

  • @RuffianLover01 horses are born to run in the wild they run to survive horses need to run horses run as long and as fast as they want ruffian wanted to keep going

  • @RuffianLover01 if horse racing was never invented, ruffian never would have been born. and all this crap about horse racing is abuse. guess what has caused a push for horse research in vets? horse racing. the only reason why our equine vets are so advanced is because of horse racing. you know, if you want a safe sport where no one will ever get hurt... then there should be no sports at all. every sport no matter what will have injuries.

  • If they would have listened to the trainer who knew her best this never would have happened. Horse racing isn't worth showing off or winning for this.

  • you see this is just proof that horse racing is a bad idea especially for a filly soo young its not nice to do that ... :'(

  • When you've got the money to make a horsey run, you've got the money to retire it....

    Ruffian showed all the signs...

  • With less than 10% chance they should have put her out of her misery straight away, poor thing must have been in so much pain.

  • Shit, I'm crying again. -.-'

  • "ya all right baby?" i never heard Frank call her that before, that's adorable....

he must have been absolutely mauled for life when she broke her other leg.... and everything else happened....

  • Her sire suffered three breakdowns and her dam had at least broken two legs. Plus, her Damsire is often considered as porveyor of the ''soft bone'' gene. In the end, it all comes down to bad genetics. It's quite unfortunate because she had so much spirit.

  • Of that one reporter hadn't printed that artcle, none of this would have happened. R.I.P.

  • I cried :'( if you didn't cry you aren't a true horse-lover..... If you cried, it proves how much you care about horses.....

  • @babybee1299

Perhaps they used a horse with an already broken leg or a stunt double

  • Oh.MY.GOD! :'( this movie is TOO sad for me but i have to keep watching!!R.I.P. Ruffian <3 <3 She WAS the BEST race horse she IS the best race horse and forever WILL be the best race horse in history.

  • do u think they used a real horse for the leg braking or betend on

  • @babybee1299 nah it was made in 07 they would of used computer for the break and probs like a lame horse when walking or one with like an abcess and probs a dummie when you see it up close and then they would use another horse on the table

  • Isn't horses supposed to wake up in an empty room to prevent them from hurting themselves? R.I.P Ruffian, you will always be rememberd as one of the greatest horses that ever lived! <3

  • @IzzaFrizza yeah, they actually started that after ruffian's death. they wake up suspended in water so they won't hurt themselves if they kick

  • Her name should have been Heart of a Champion. Coz that's what she had, the heart of a champion

  • This film make me cry ='(

RIP Ruffian, I love you forever <3

  • This makes my yhink of a race that I loved and I was sooo sad when he died :(

     Well RIP Ruffian

  • horse racing is not a bad sport, anyone who says this is wrong. wot happened with ruffian and other horses who get injured is an accident and these things just happen, its just like horses getting injured in show jumping or dressage or even in a riding school, we cant stop it these things just happen

  • Did anyone think to immobilize her leg BEFORE she did the inevetible?????

  • an operating room would not be that DARK while vets were doing surgery on an animal!!!

  • She thought she was still running. Even with her mind muddled, pain coursing through her body, and a strange, foreign object wrapped around her leg, she kept running. She died doing what she loved to do. She had the Heart of a Champion. R.I.P. baby girl

  • @spequestrian No she didn't ove running she did it becuase that's what she was trained to do and knew no different. People who say that re stupid and ignorant.

  • @TheSneeakyNinjas GO AWAY

  • @heavenshorses123 It's true. You don't love horses.

  • @TheSneeakyNinjas EXCUSE ME!!! thats a line i wouldn't have crossed. my LIFE is about horses.

  • @heavenshorses123 Phaa it's true.

  • Comment removed

  • she still would of won that race, poor thing.. she really did not deserve it but say they say only the good die young..

people who are saying 'racing is abuse' is wrong, this was an accident any horse could do this, a jumper, even a dressage horse. galloping is good for them as someone else said it stretches them out.

  • So did they not believe in Sedatives back then or something? Because a horse with that sever a break should be sedated and risen off the ground, not allowed to lay down like that so she can break her other leg.

I guess that wasn't discovered yet back then.

  • my heart droped when I heard she broke her other leg.... I swear I want to cry so badly now, but I haven't cried since the last time I watched this movie, last year...

  • @TheGreatandLovable It will do u good, when she made it throught the surgery, then she broke the other leg, i broke my heart for her. Im from Oz, but i still care for all animals around the world.

  • even if they hadn't have had to put her down, she still would never had raced again, she would have had to live the rest of her life in a stall, just standing there...

I think it was best that they had put her down, it was a choice I would have made, even if it was a sad one to make

  • She never stopped running, when she was fully awake she still thought she was running. That just kills me right there, to see a horse that still wants to run.

  • I don't understand english so well, what does the man in the end tells the couple by phone? Wasn't the mare recovering with the bandage an all the stuff?

  • @NakuruNebelung

When she started 'running' while she was down in the vet's office, she broke her other leg, I'm guessing her other foreleg.

  • @beefchops2011

Actually she broke her elbow while coming out of anesthesia :-(

  • i started crying at 7:11 when ruffian was crying :'(

  • galopings horse is this fuecher

  • I find it a bit sad that they portray her as somewhat stupid by 'still running' horses just wouldn't be like that. Even back then, horses were not left in an open space to wake up.

  • This is what happens when we ask too much of horses too soon for all the wrong reasons. I wish more people would watch this and understand that horses are so much more than names on a scorecard.

  • I Have A Question, Why Is It That At 3:55, The Skin Around The Open Gash That There Operating On Is Like A Chestnutty Cream Colour, When Ruffian Is Black? Even If They Had Shaved The Skin, Wouldnt It Still Be Black?:Sxx

  • @StartItWithASmile No because the fur is black, but the skin is still the cream colour. it's like when you have hair and then you shave it off, beneath it's still that same color. The injury was a open wound,

  • @CPProductions13 Oh Right, My Horses Skin Is Very Dark :P Thanks For Telling Me:)

  • OMG put her in a sling if she was in a sling she would have survived

    R.I.P. Ruffian we love you

  • I'm going to my emo corner now I hate it when horses get hurt

  • all she wanted to do was finish the race

  • Oh poor Ruffian. She must have been so scared and in so much pain. She broke her other leg? I never new that. R.I.P. Ruffian. ;(

  • No she wasn't in a harness and she should of been. She could of been saved then.

  • @Royalstar2010 yes i agree they shud ov had her put in a harness and had her standin upright! Then she wud ov still been wi us 2day but fully retired.

  • @BlazinMustang79 no she wouldnt because even after the surgery, she woke up running and shattered her other leg. There was no way they could have done anything before hand to save her.

  • I've seen a horse that broke a leg and was operated on, but he woke in a special harness that kept him up right and kept his weight off his leg. I wonder if she was in that, maybe her thrashing around wouldn't have been so dangerous

  • @kidwiththecap You have to remember though, this was in the '70s. Almost 40 years ago, no way could they have even had that then.

  • she never stop running..

  • im so sad that this is based on a true story, i could never watch my horse in so much pain, i would cry to death ):

  • I broke down into tears!!! R.i.P Ruffian!! You are an angel to everyone!

  • well i got given a race horse he broke down durin a race his name is crarglee cowboy and i wish i could of kept him but we had no where to put him he was true gentlman u could see it in his eyes u could c he wanted to keep running he is retired now!!!

  • nothing makes me cry but this did

  • Poor girl! Ruffian is the most bravest horse in the world!

    R.I.P

  • As long as she dies happily I'm happy at least they ended her suffering

  • im Happy as long as she dies happy. I mean that by she died doing what she loved most! *cries terribly* the part i cried most was when her eye shut really s;lowly i just bauled sooooo bad!

  • this is sad. rip ruffian

  • At 8:42 I Couldn't Believe It When The Doctor Said, "She's Broken Her Other Leg." I Was Like, "Oh No... :("

  • i hate damn reporters! They're so stupid and obnoxious! They don't care about anything but a story. They don't care about the horse at all.

This breaks my heart. I almost threw up, that was descussting but I'm glad they showed it. Poor baby didn't know what was coming to her.

    (I appologize for my language...)

  • :( Poor girl... she was the best...

Pharlap Australia's wonder horse was poison! D=

  • this makes me cry every time, you can tell she loved running, she kept raceing, even after the surgery was over, that my friends is the heart of a champion..... RIP Ruffian, you will NEVER be forgotton!

  • ohhhhh... poor thing :'(

  • this just breaks my heart....

  • Poor Ruffian. Shattered dreams and a shattered horse. So sad...Glad they ended her suffering.

  • young horses like this should not race...their bones are not strong enough, she was just... a "child" when this terrible accident happened...not even fully grown...she could have been 30 years old if it werent for the stupidity of some humans. R.I.P. RUFFIAN

  • @schneggilein89 While her bones were still strengthening, her damsire, Northern Dancer, was known for his soft bones. Both parents, in fact, were soft boned, and her genes were just not complimentary to a successful racehorse, although she made it work while she could. If she had been born with better genes, we'd have many great Ruffian foals today.

  • @horseluvv her dam sire was native dancer btw :) my horses great damsire is nothern dancer :)

    x

  • first she had an injured back-leg that healed, then she broke her leg in the race, it was wrapped, and then, she thought that she was still running, she wanted to run more, but she broke her second front-leg, i was crying when i saw her break down

  • that trainer, well the one in the movie, showed that he really cared about Ruffian.. and he probably cared about every single horse that way.. but i think he knew that Ruffian was a special one.. i only recently heard about this movie and i think it is fantastic i will actually have to read about it..

  • Human greed is a terrible, terrible thing. In our search for the greatest thrill, we place the life of those we push beneath us. Ruffian, if anything at all, serves as a constant reminder of our horrible, horrible greed and why we must never, ever allow such things to happen to such magnificent animals ever again. Rest in peace, you poor girl...

  • @rlycats24 that's not a good reason to hate racing. What happened to Ruffian was not any ones fault. There's nothing that could have been done to prevent her accident. They think she broke her leg because she tripped. In every sport accidents happen. That's not the fault of horse racing.

RIP Ruffian. You are a great horse.

  • 0:13 she looks so small on that table oh yeah i forgot that's a fake horse

  • this is exactly why I hate racing!! :(

  • I wonder if maybe she didn't break down, if there would've been a possiblity of the owners of Ruffian and Foolish Pleasure to breed the two. There would've been a great foal from the two. R.I.P. Ruffian <3

  • my heart drops every time i see the birds and i have to mute the computer so i cant hear her.............

  • I think if only she wouldn't've been in this race, we could've had some amazing foals from her and she would've lived a long time. I love horses. They're my passion. Seeing this breaks my heart. It's sad when you can't help but thinking, what if it didn't happen? I can't help but wonder. Ruffian was amazing. She was special, like no other. R.I.P Ruffian, you were amazing, special, beautiful, and had an incredibly large heart. May you always be remembered <3 <3

  • I remember watching this race when it happened. It was as much a shock as Barbaro's breakdown decades later. The surgery was a success, but as she was coming out of anesthesia she thrashed and kicked until she destroyed the cast and injured another leg. Now veterinary medicine has come farther, and she would have recovered in a sling in a standing position; some even are partially submerged in water to reduce any impact from kicking. They did the best they could with what they had.

  • I'm crying so hard... My passion is for horses, I love to see then run... I love to ride and gallop on them... And to see this.. It breaks my heart....

  • stupid owners did this and the ppl that cared more for media and money and things to sell. greed kills i hope some ppl realized that after this happened. so few ever have.

  • I was very moved by the film. Ruffian is on my mined still since the year she was running. I love her. Her pedigree is special to. Thank you for the movie.

  • Mir kommen immer wieder die Tränen.

Für mich ist Ruffian eine wahre Wunderstute

die in meinem herzen nie auf hört zu

Galoppieren. Sie ist einzigartig und wird

es auch immer sein. Ruffian R.I.P♥

  • "i dont want her suffering anymore" you're the one that put her through the suffering you idiot!

  • poor Ruffian...im so sorry sweet baby...i know how it feels to be imobile... just a few hours ago i hurt my ankle real bad.. =;(

  • Thankfully there are more advanced methods now,but still, sometimes 'life happens'.

  • The only thing a match-race ever proved is that you're pushing your horse, be it male or female, much harder than they would ever be pushed under a normal race scenario. I very much agree with Frank Whiteley's character's comment in the movie. That a match-race never proved a thing!!! JMO.

  • she never stopped runin;.(.

  • the race industry is so cruel. she was just a baby.

  • @maryhoernchen You mean well but birds have got to fly and a horse has got to run. Would you have chicks stay in the nest, so they do not fall? Whay about horses that hurt themselves in stalls, paddocks or pastures? Or in 'the wild'?

  • omg i feel srry for her i love ruffian R.I.P RUFFIAN<3 <3 <3 <3

  • oh ein gott ich habe so gänsehaut!!

  • i am crying so much right now :,'(

  • bless her! 7:43 shes trying to move! i havent seen the rest of it from that point tho!! it was sad when she broke down (tear)

  • im sorry, is this real? the horse and what happend?

  • @thecazzledazzle it all real, the trainer pasted away last year, the horses as well, all of them

  • @thecazzledazzle The movie; no. The story; yes

  • Ruffian was the best race horse in the world. She must be. . .

  • Very Pretty Horse Ruffian

  • just to see her fade away breaks my heart she probably cracked her ankel off the gate and when the birds got in the way you see her kinda stop but put all her weight in that One foot which probably caused it to shatter poor girl ♥ R.I.P Ruffian

  • T_T

  • Omg, i'm propper crying my eyes out here :'( i used to love galloping my old horse, but i swear to god right now, i will never gallop him again :'(

    R.I.P Ruffian:'(

  • galloping isen't abuse, it actually steatches them out (which is good). The horses in horses racing are only 3 years old, and they really beat the speed out of them thats why the get hurt, thats abuse . I gallop my horse al the time

  • yea i know, but it's dangerous, i galloped him all the time and i dont want him to break anything

  • The racing people start racing their horses 2 years old..they still have their baby structure. Their bodies and legs don't grow in all the way till around 4-5 years old! They should start racing them really till age 3, and that is still hard on them how hard they run them.

  • @HorseLuvinWolfGirl Galloping is a natural thing for horses. It's just like running for people. It's not dangerous. Imagine what you are taking away from your horse.

  • @herewefly I agree it's young, but if you knew something about racing you would know that a LOT of progress have been made, especially after Ruffian, than Barbaro, about safety, reglementations and all. Like since 2007, compare to Ruffian's time and before, if you're a late foal (may, june...) you can't run in january 2 years later when you're 1 1/2 like you use too. You need to be at least 24 months, I know it's not the best, but it's a start and it's only one of MANY new rules since 2007

  • @herewefly And also don't forget that a horse won't do what he doesn't want to do. If a horse decide he doesn't want to run, he won't. They're not ''beat/oblige'' to run. Look at that filly who refuse to ran, was standing still in the starting gate in her last 2 starts. And many horses really have a STRONG will to race, to win. Just look at Ruffian or Barbaro...or Declan's moon, Rachel, Queen Z, Smarty Jones, named them all

  • @Elvira237 Umm are u telling me that Ruffian didnt fell like racing that day so she broke down.. Just curious.

  • @taykyl001 ??? What are you talking about? I was only responding to a person..like so many others, who think racing is just horse abuse when they don't know ANYTHING at all. People who don't know that horses love to race, to win. Read my sentence again, I said that MANNNYYYYY horses have the will to win, and I included Ruffian in it

  • Point-to point racing is so much easier on a horse's anatomy. Trainers wait until the horse is at least five...I've seen even seven year olds making their maiden runs but I love the sport both point to point and dirt track racing...you can't help but admire these wonderful athletes for the beauties they are

  • cruel as fuck that sport,i'm sorry but I hate racing

  • i cried so mutch its so sad how it broke is just zo poor but it dont hate racing because its not always ending up this way...and besides i would like to have a horse but not a racehorse because i know this could happen.but if you think that way you cant get any animals (tennant1010) and yes Ruffian is sure a winner.

  • this film is soo sad..... thats one of the reasons why i never got a horse cuz i dont want to get too attached otherwise if it seriously hurt its self i wouldnt be able to put it down

  • Well, grief is the price we pay for love. And the odds are with you. those horses r running full speed on a dirt track. As when we gallop our hor horses they are in a sand area.

  • Yeah, I totally agree with you tennant1010!

  • you take that risk with any animal tho... horse racing is just ridiculously trying on a horse. =\ they're very young when they start them so they get injuries just like any athlete. It is very sad, but that's just racing. There are other horse 'sports' that are far safer for the horses health lol. And just plain old riding the horse for fun isn't going to cause an injury that severe.

  • When these things happen it makes me feel like the horse knows they are going to be put down, but they don't want to yet, like they know what to choose but they can't. And even when their lives are on the line like that the fire in their eyes doesn't burn out.

  • i feel sorry 4 ruffian & the trainer . he wasnt keen on this match race , now look whats happend . thats the cruel part of horse racing the horse at 2 & fucking their bone & tendons . 2year old should'nt race or even three yr olds ! they havnt grown !

  • same, there bones havent developed properly and there not as strong as they are when there older

  • yes they don't have to race a horse at age of 2 or 3 , they can wait until a horse is 5 years is not to old to race at 5 years.

  • omg poor ruffian, if i was there i would have been crying my eyes out. She thinks shes still running on the track, shes a true winner :'(
