OK Campell, what's you're take on white bread vs non white breads? I used to eat a whole lot of simple carbs including a ton of white breads. Several years back i made a wholesale change and went strictly with complex carbs oatmeal, brown rice, wheat pasta, whole grain breads etc, etc. The results were very positive. I dropped body fat and saw gains in muscle especially in the abdominal area. Since then the only simple carbs i have is the occasional flat bread pizza.
@mgsimba1 Really boils down to personal preference in my opinion. White bread and wheat bread have similar macronutrient profiles/calories, so the change is really minuscule. The main difference in some cases are the micronutrients.
@CampbellFitness Thats surprising. I am storing less fat than i was before. I think it at least has something to do with the breads i'm eating now vs before. If i remember right i was around 12% before i got off simple carbs. I hover around 8.5 to 9.5 nowadays. Biggest difference in abs. And its not because i'm doing more ab work because i was doing plenty before.
@mgsimba1 As far as GI and insulin goes (where the lower the number the less insulin), whole wheat bread and white bread can actually be identical. Again, main difference being micro nutrients. From what I've seen, when most people identify simple (or high GI foods) as bad, they make a concerned effort to not only try to stay away from them, but carbs in general.
May be true about cals in v cals out, but the thing with the carbs and fat loss is this. Carbs cause an insulin response, when insulin is release, your body won't burn stored fat and HGH release is inhibited. As I know you know, HGH is a great fat burner in the human body. So, while the concept you say here is completely accurate, it isn't quite black and white. At least that is based on my experience and knowledge. Would love to hear your thoughts on this though. Thanks!
@Wolverine0777 I think insulin is something that's greatly misunderstood and gets a very bad rap. If you look at the spikes you get during a day, it's more than balanced out when you sleep, not to mention most insulin response is delayed by the other foods you eat in conjunction with the simple carbs.
@CampbellFitness I certainly am no expert by any means. I may be wrong, but my understanding is any insulin response hinders fat loss as the insulin response causes the body to go into storage mode to put it simply. Whether it be glycogen or fat storage and not fat burning mode. Carbs won't cause you to gain fat so long as total cals are on, but they certainly may delay the burning of stored fat. Again may be off on this and I know its not that simple but that's my understanding
I'm currently on low carb(150ish), high fat(150ish), high protein(350) with one high carb day a week(400ish). Doing it just to see what effect it'll have on my body. 4 weeks in, so far so good.
@ConestogaGuy Taubes is kind of notorious for leaving out research in most of his writings in order to reinforce his point along with various other misinformation.
@CampbellFitness I feel like you are guilty of the same offense. Saying that weight gain/loss depends entirely on calories in vs. calories out is flawed logic. Take a person who burns 2000 calories per day; they routinely consume 2500 calories per day and they steadily gain weight until they finally plateau at 25 lbs 'overweight'. They are not consuming any less calories now than they were before nor are they doing anymore exercise, yet they've reached caloric equilibrium
@ConestogaGuy It makes sense. Given your scenario the 2000 calories per day is your equilibrium to maintain your current state. If you consume less, you'll lose weight over time, if you consume more you'll gain weight over time. When you reach a heavier weight (in this case 25lbs), your equilibrium will change as you've stated (so instead of 2000 being the basis of gaining or losing it's now 2500), and at that point it's still consume less than equilibrium to lose, consume more to gain.
@CampbellFitness It is an excess of insulin (caused by excessive starchy cause) that is the cause of most of the worlds obesity and science has proven this. Am I saying that carbs will make everyone fat? Absolutely not. I'm a thin guy who eats a lot of carbs. The analogy I like to use with my clients is this: "Only a small percentage of people who smoke develop lung cancer, but other the people who do have lung cancer - the vast majority are smokers".
@ConestogaGuy I'm going to send you an article that sums up insulin well. It's called "Insulin, an underserved bad reputation." I'll direct message you the link.
I lost 50 kilos in 6 months with Atkins diet (Lo-carb diet) and after that i started working out and changed my diet to basic healthy balanced ''bodybuilder'' diet.
Oh yeah.. I lost that 50 kilos completely without any kind of excercising.. Now i've been working out for 4 months and doing great.
Thing is, if you cut out fat's and stick to it it works. If you cut out carbs and stick to it, it works. All the diets fucking work but the point is its easier to stick to a low carb diet then a low fat diet, because low fat diet put you on shit you don't like and won't let you eat nuts, olives and avocados which are incredibly beneficial
@TheGregsterx I wouldn't ever suggest going too low fat as your body needs it to keep normal hormone levels, however I do agree that most "diets" can work if you stick to the basic principles which are usually consuming less than your body needs at it's current weight.
@AFROTHINKER You don't have to agree, however based off how the body works and processes carbs (simple or complex), the bottom line is that they still won't be directly responsible for weight gain. Obviously if you eat enough donuts to put you in a caloric surplus you'll gain weight, however the same could be true if you ate enough fruits.
@CambellFitness, love your videos man & the fact that you take time to try to answer ppl's comments. I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with this video to a certain extent. A caloric deficit will help u lose weight but you may lose muscle weight if protein isn't high enough that's why we create the deficit by manipulating carbs?
@Wuzdarap You're right with the potential to lose muscle. I didn't get into depth on that just b/c it didn't really fit the topic. Point was more of eating carbs doesn't necessarily equal fat gain.
@Wuzdarap Yes and and also because carbs can decrease lipogenesis by around 50%. If you tolerate carbs well than you can also slightly lower the fat intake.
in my opinion carbs do matter for fat loss, however not weight loss. diet someone down on a deficit with 40% carbs from simple and whole sources, then another person on a relatively low carb, higher fat and protein diet, the person on the higher fat diet will lose significantly less muscle in relation to fat lost.
@bigbobabc123 I disagree somewhat. I'm taking in 45% carbs right now and am on a cut while maintaining or increasing my strength. Most people take in more proteins and fats then are necessary and are unused by the body. If you scale these to the right levels you're able to up carbs and see the same results. Thanks for the feedback!
@CampbellFitness that's cool, you're definately lean. it may be one of them things that just vary with people. i just hold the belief that constant insulin spikes are bad for fat loss since insulin in a high degree stops the fat burning process until the carbs are used. once again though, it works for you and i agree with you that the energy balance with calories is the most important part. good video though you put out good stuff.
@bigbobabc123 I agree that constant insulin spikes can be bad, but most people don't eat those "spike worthy" foods by themselves. When you consume them with proteins and fats they greatly slow the response by your body. Thanks for the great responses, really appreciate.
yes carbs dont make you fat. However, if you want to lose weight you have to drop your calories, bare in mind that you protein should go up slightly so you cant cut calories from protein ( just get leaner protein sources), you will always need your healthy fatty acids so you cant cut calories from those, so, carbs are probably the best option to cut your calories down. Thats why bodybuilders do it, thats how many people do it. You have to cut your calories down to meet your macros!
@parcoreLA I think it just depends on the person too (as far as what they cut). Most people over do it on protein as it is, so in theory you could reduce protein while keeping carbs in your diet as long as you're in a deficit at the end of the day.
I think most ppl tend to associate carbs with fat loss/gain because in most cases it's the easiest macro to adjust and will indirectly affect your calories in/out. Great vid man. I've been outa the loop for a while. Bigass winter storm here in Washington left 300k + homes without power for like 4 days.
This has to be one of the best youtube videos ive ever seen. HE'S 100% RIGHT. Accept the fact that it really just comes down to Calories in calories out, people over-analyze weight loss and try limiting things they shouldnt. If your eating 2000 Calories a day, it DOESNT MATTER wether its coming from 100% Fat, 100% Carbs, 100% Protein or however you divide it up.
Deffinetely a video im going to add to my favorites, u hit the nail on the head man, great vid!
Hah. So it's just about calories in calories out? Weight loss has nothing to do with hormones? Eating 500grams of pure glucose would be the same as getting 2000kcal from a 60% fat, 30% protein and 10% curbs diet? Having a hard time to believe you.
@vbknez Obviously if you have specific goals in mind for getting in shape, your macros come more into play, however, the fact of the matter is, if you're taking in less calories then your body needs, you'll lose weight.
@vbknez What kind of example is that? If you eat 2000 cals worth of glucose (assuming you are on a 2000 cals diet) you aren't meeting your macros for fat and protein. You missed his point. Protein, fat and carbs make up your cals. As long as you meet those macros specific to your goal, you will see results. The only way to gain/lose weight is to be in a surplus/deficit. If you aren't there, nothing else matters.
@GyalisAndino I'm confused. U said it yourself at the end. If u have an deficit in calories u burn fat. i said that if that is so, than if u calculated that you should get 2000kcal to burn fat , than it doesn't matter if those calories come from pure sugar or from a paleo diet for instance. It's the same. The onyl thing that matters, are the calories in vs. calories out.
@vbknez You are still missing the point. Yes, as long as you are in a deficit you are good. However, your cals come from the 3 macros. It is possible to meet your daily cal intake but not meet your macros. So you should focus on getting all the macros you need which will work out to you meeting your daily cal intake.
@vbknez The question was if carbs make u fat. I claim they do, since two diets with the same calories and different macro nutrient ratios will not give same results. In my opinion it depends more on what you eat and the hormonal response you get from that. If it would be about calories in calories out than, a diet of pure sugar would give equal results as an diet with the same calories but with no sugar at all.
protein helps build muscle, carbs provide the energy to grow, fix muscle and energize you through your workout/day, fats provide you with the hormones necessary to grow like test and HGH, again nice video bro, love the ending ... pretty jokes and yaa i gotta get my hands on a new fitted with the new jays logo
@TdotVICE you have to watch your carbs but those people who super restrict their carbs are idiots bcuz youre gonna lose the energy to stay focused and motivated and they usually go on a super carb binge, way too much carbs can lead to weight gain and that can cause the body to support a state where estrogen levels can increase, lol sorry guys but yaa i have a thing for staying in a pro test state
guys low carb diets are effective not only due to calorie restriction but also due to its effect on blood sugar. stable blood sugar with no spikes = less hunger pangs. dont believe me? eat fast carbs and see how full you feel. fiber and protein diets are most successful.
nice video. too many people want magic bullets and low carb is essentially dieting for dummies. For those of us who understand what you are saying, it is nice to hear some educated people on these youtube videos
I think it's funny that people are saying in your meal videos that you're eating too many carbs, and you'll get fat, when obviously you're not fat. Glad to see you keep a good head when people get ignorant my man!
@MoreViralVideos I only really have time to play once a week for about an hour or so. I was right at the end of Gears of War 3 campaign when finishing this video. I typically only play one game at a time, beat it, then go on to the next game. That being said, the game I'm working on now is Skyrim.
@CampbellFitness I think many people, such as myself, will benefit from you making a Fats 101 and Carbohydrates 101 video, elaborating upon common misconceptions and what each one of them can do once they enter your body.
I think the statistic is that 80% of successful bodybuilding is in your nutrition, yet some people don't even know macronutrients exist.
Just a suggestion, I'm a new subsciber and I'm diggin' your videos, man. Keep it up!
Carbs only make you fat IF they are simple sugars and starches that are eaten in combination with A) high saturated fat meals B) when muscle & liver glycogen levels, and blood glucose levels are all topped off and/or C) eaten late at night right before bed.
Carbs do not make you fat when used effectively, timely, and nutritionally in the correct manner.
@ThXKamilX Although I don't agree with what he said, I never try to become overly argumentative. It's one of those things if you don't have anything nice to say don't say it.
@ThXKamilX How is this a pure lie? And how is this misinformation when their is empirical research to support the evidence? Look up Timed Ketogenic Diet (TKD) or Cyclic Ketogenic Diet (CKD). Or...for starts...how about you look up the 3 Energy systems, especially the aerobic energy system (gluconeogenesis, beta-oxidation, Cori Cycle, and Kreb's Cycle). Thanks, have a nice day.
DUDE u r incredibly wrong, please stop saying such bullshit. I am very dissapointed that Brandon responded to you with" thx for the response" while he knows the truth.
@ThXKamilX How am I so incredibly wrong? If you think you know it so well, please educate me on carbohydrates. Seeing as I have a BS in Exercise Science and am an active successful bodybuilder...I would say I know what I am doing. Unless I did not convey my thoughts accurately to you.
Carbohydrates along with fats and proteins all come together to add-up to a total caloric intake daily. It is ONE thing to have your macro parameters in check daily, but another to manipulate timing of such
@ThXKamilX --to achieve a desired result. That is what bodybuilding REALLY is...it's manipulation of one's hormones naturally through diet combined with rigorous training and mental preparation to say the least...
Please, if you are so set in your thoughts of wisdom, share your knowledge, and enlighten me on some new research material.
yo brandon, i always wanted to know if there is a way to calculate exactly how many carbs / calories i should intake everyday? i mean i kinda figured it out by now what i have to eat but i would like to know a exact number....
@Mercy4darkness It's hard to get an exact number as it depends on your body and your goals. I use an online calculator to get a rough idea and then just play around with it and see how it effects my gains/losses.
I think this video makes it nice and simple for people. Which is what people need to do because they try to overcomplicate something as simple as diet. Dorian Yates followed a protein intake + total kcal his whole career.
Great video. I had this mentality in my first couple years of lifting until I successfully lost weight on a high carbs diet. It was so much easier to cut than being on a low carbs diet. The only downside is it makes you a little bloated but what truly matters is how much body fat you have. Because you could always sweat the excess water weight over the course of two days if you need to compete or do a photoshoot.
As a Type II diabetic who WAS formerly obese - but now is a pretty lean/ripped 6'3" and 225lbs (34" waist) ... I strongly believe the ONLY reason to eat low-carb is if you're an obese, less-active person with metabolic syndrome/insulin-resistance or diabetes.
If you're NOT morbidly obese, NOT diabetic, and you're active - especially doing any HIIT (weight or other interval training) - then you do NOT need to eat low-carb.
i'm on cutting rite now and i think its funny that a lot of channels on youtube in the last few days posted videos about low carb diet, cardio, losin weight lol
@Cassify06 Obviously if you restrict carbs you're restricting calories which can lead to weight loss, but to say you need to cut carbs to diet is just wrong.
Wow I can't believe there are still people that believe carbs at night turn to fat, are people really that unaware of energy balance and glycogen stores.
@CampbellFitness Real good. Still finding time to hit it 6 times a week. Its is getting rare to find good information on youtube lately. Thanks for making the videos
@sexylilthug77 Listen to the vid it explains. Do you have any proof that what you say works in the real world? Are you in shape? The only reason people go low-carb and the reason some people are scared of carbs is because your intake on them tends to decide whether you lose/maintain/gain weight. 2500 cals is 2500 cals. If you're body maintanence is 2500 cals and you're consuming 2500 @ high carb, low protein or vice versa it doesn't make a difference. Btw most bbers are 5'7-5'10
Carbs do make you get fat . why is that ? not because they are a molecular fattening product is just because its more easy to eat more calories in form of carbs than fat and protein . Have a good day
brandon- we all know whole foods are superior to supplements for getting to your macro goals, but what are your views on milk for getting protein? do you consider it a whole food or more on the supplement-type side of things? thanks for your opinion
OK Campell, what's you're take on white bread vs non white breads? I used to eat a whole lot of simple carbs including a ton of white breads. GyalisAndino 1 month ago
The onyl thing that matters, are the calories in vs. calories out.
vbknez 1 month ago
@vbknez You are still missing the point. Yes, as long as you are in a deficit you are good. However, your cals come from the 3 macros. It is possible to meet your daily cal intake but not meet your macros. So you should focus on getting all the macros you need which will work out to you meeting your daily cal intake.
GyalisAndino 4 weeks ago

TdotVICE 1 month ago
@TdotVICE you have to watch your carbs but those people who super restrict their carbs are idiots bcuz youre gonna lose the energy to stay focused and motivated and they usually go on a super carb binge, way too much carbs can lead to weight gain and that can cause the body to support a state where estrogen levels can increase, lol sorry guys but yaa i have a thing for staying in a pro test state

@TdotVICE Yeah it's an awesome hat. Just wish the fitteds weren't so freaking expensive.

guys low carb diets are effective not only due to calorie restriction but also due to its effect on blood sugar. stable blood sugar with no spikes = less hunger pangs. dont believe me? eat fast carbs and see how full you feel. fiber and protein diets are most successful.

@mentalshade I don't necessarily agree with that.

CampbellFitness 1 month ago
@ThXKamilX How is this a pure lie? And how is this misinformation when their is empirical research to support the evidence? Look up Timed Ketogenic Diet (TKD) or Cyclic Ketogenic Diet (CKD). Or...for starts...how about you look up the 3 Energy systems, especially the aerobic energy system (gluconeogenesis, beta-oxidation, Cori Cycle, and Kreb's Cycle). Thanks, have a nice day.
ebishop1102 1 month ago
@ebishop1102
DUDE u r incredibly wrong, please stop saying such bullshit. I am very dissapointed that Brandon responded to you with" thx for the response" while he knows the truth.
ThXKamilX 1 month ago
@ThXKamilX How am I so incredibly wrong? If you think you know it so well, please educate me on carbohydrates. Seeing as I have a BS in Exercise Science and am an active successful bodybuilder...I would say I know what I am doing. Unless I did not convey my thoughts accurately to you.
Carbohydrates along with fats and proteins all come together to add-up to a total caloric intake daily. It is ONE thing to have your macro parameters in check daily, but another to manipulate timing of such
ebishop1102 1 month ago
@ThXKamilX --to achieve a desired result. That is what bodybuilding REALLY is...it's manipulation of one's hormones naturally through diet combined with rigorous training and mental preparation to say the least...
Please, if you are so set in your thoughts of wisdom, share your knowledge, and enlighten me on some new research material.

yo brandon, i always wanted to know if there is a way to calculate exactly how many carbs / calories i should intake everyday? i mean i kinda figured it out by now what i have to eat but i would like to know a exact number....
Mercy4darkness 1 month ago
@Mercy4darkness It's hard to get an exact number as it depends on your body and your goals. I use an online calculator to get a rough idea and then just play around with it and see how it effects my gains/losses.
CampbellFitness 1 month ago

CampbellFitness 1 month ago
@sexylilthug77 Listen to the vid it explains. Do you have any proof that what you say works in the real world? Are you in shape? The only reason people go low-carb and the reason some people are scared of carbs is because your intake on them tends to decide whether you lose/maintain/gain weight. 2500 cals is 2500 cals. If you're body maintanence is 2500 cals and you're consuming 2500 @ high carb, low protein or vice versa it doesn't make a difference. Btw most bbers are 5'7-5'10
