  • What did you do to the wood to make the surface look (and feel I guess) : Like laminate?

  • Great video! I was gonna make a similar one. Whats your drawer and drawer slider dimensions for the full size keyboard? I have an 88 key keyboard about 30lbs. Thanks

    Jason

  • I think if your gonna buy a desk, Custom is the only way to go, I shopped for hours and hours before taking the extra drive to the hardware store. Picked up some nice materials, Drafted up some designs to meet the standards of all my kit. And now it all looks primo!

great design u got in the vid too man! very cool.

  • how to build a music production desk and computer and all these stuff :

steal a shitload of money (since its nearly impossible to make that much money)

  • NICEEEEEE

  • Awesoooommee!!

  • Looks damn nice. How much did you offer on material? Have looked on the net for a desk but the prices are a bit high, around 170 euro for a descent one...

  • very pretty desk. good job!

  • @ElectrikBear thank you

  • Hi, I want to build something very similar, with the slide out keyboard. Your desk is AMAZING!

Do you have instructions on how to do this? For instance, how did you fasten everything together and make sure it was all level and square? I also noticed you used Plywood as well for the entire desk.

I am new to woodworking and have decided to design my own desk rather than just buy one that I can hardly use. Thanks for your help!

  • @GameVerb thank you, i think you'll be pleased with the decision to build your own rather than buying one already made. As far as fastening everything together, it's best to to use screws and wood glue. All work should be done on a sturdy, level surface. Not to be a smart ass, but to answer your question on everything being level and square, I used just that- a level and a right angle square ruler. Those two things are essential! i did use plywood, but a higher quality wood is great

  • what is the thickness of the plywood?

  • @GuaGuaVin 3/4 inch

  • what kind of speakers

    ?

  • @chiipBaa they are KRK Rokit 8....great for the price, but there better ones out there.

  • @ugroove2this1 Great job on building the desk! How much did your speakers cost you though? And do they serve you well or no?

  • @SevenonThebeat Thank you, Guitar Center has the Rokit 8's listed at $249.99, pretty good price. They have served me very well, but I will say there are better studio monitors out there. Yamaha, Adams, Genelec are all great brands, but you will pay more.

  • whats good i like that desk can u send me the dementions?

  • @blacqjesus1 i don't have them anymore, but I followed robfalcon501's video. he lists all deminsions

  • May I ask How thick is the wood that you are using

Great video by the way. I want to make one of these

  • whoah

  • this is the desk i use. it turned out to be a lot bigger than it looks in the picture which was great. the corner shelves are perfect for monitors and there is room below for rack and interfaces. and the best part, it was only $60!

Its the osp design mercury corner desk from staples. it wont let me post a link but i would suggest looking it up

  • Gonna make one for me, thx for the vid, very helpful

  • nice job

  • @LiCKERiSHmedia thank you

  • Im possible going to buy a desk that cost around $300, how much did u spend on building ur desk? By the way, it is sick dude

  • @prepboymagic around $150 on materials...and thank you very much!

  • I love how the piano keyboard can slide out or be hidden. That's usually the location of the computer keyboard whereas the piano keyboard sits on top of the desk. That never seemed practical for me, personally. Good work man.

  • @Drucef Thank you very much

  • nice studio....the advantage of investing time and money into how your studio looks is that its then presentable enough to sell studio time to local artists

  • @TheDevyl91 thank you

  • where did you get the rack mount things?

  • @Kwamelion rack mount can be bought at Guitar Center and at several internet retailers. I prefer to just go the actual store so I can mess with everything. Its pretty cheap, and comes in different sizes.

  • i gonna do this next weekend

  • how much did it cost?

  • @theiangolden around $100 as long as you already have power tools

  • Sick. I want one.

  • nice.. i am running out of computer space but i think i am going to have to build a new house because my room isnt big enough for all of these new tables and shit i got in here haha ... but i like your design.. good work

  • @CeSektion thank you

  • this is not a how to it's a how i built my ;) good job

  • If you ever decide to modify it, or for those looking to build one here's a few things to note:

-the more surface area, the worse for acoustics.

-angle your desktop!!! I recommend as much as you can do without stuff sliding off. It does wonders for reflecting the sound to the back of the room instead of right at your ears.

  • What people don't understand is how much a desk can ruin your sound. Unfortunately you've just created a nice big flat reflection surface between you and your monitors. Your monitors which are also resonating through the desk since you've got nothing underneath to decouple them.

  • @johnnywoodbugs people also don't realize that it's not all about perfect sound quality or acoustics when producing a beat. if the beat's good... its good. If it sucks... it sucks.

    No matter how perfectly mastered.

  • @RossCreations What people? How many people have you met who think all that matters is good acoustics and sound quality but content doesn't matter? lol.

This is a video about how to make a studio desk, not how to make "a good beat".

If you're serious about music then you want to change a few things with the way this is built as I described.

If it's just a hobby for you then no worries.

Perfect isn't needed, but most people have straight up bad acoustics and monitoring setup.

  • @johnnywoodbugs I understand what you're saying, but I won't be angling the deck of this workstation anytime soon. I get it though, I've been in countless studios where the professional made workstation had the angle and the mixing board was in it. I am not a carpenter and do not plan on being one :) I'm obviously a novice at wood work, but I think my finished product turned out quite nice. As far as acoustics, what you you don't see are my treated walls and bass traps.

  • @ugroove2this1 And I've used Auralex pads under the monitors, I wasn't happy with the angle and i really couldn't tell the difference. You can't stress how important acoustics are, but what I've found through the years, whether it was in my own studio or working with many true professionals is...how's the final product?? thats what it comes down to. It's not like any of my tracks actually stayed in my studio the entire time. They get bounced to friends studios, listen to in cars..

  • @ugroove2this1 played at club gigs, etc. Anyway....I appreciate the feedback for sure.

  • @RossCreations Those are the words of someone who has no idea what a set of isolation pads are

  • yeah thats what i need

  • could you list the materials for the desk?

  • fly as hell

  • @Createzmusic Thank you

  • does the draw hold up the keyboard well? Me and dad were debating wether it was a good idea

  • @TheDanVirgo yes it does i bought the heavy duty one due to the size of the keyboard...its great!

  • @ugroove2this1

Yeah I was gonna say, I've looked into purchasing setups like this, and everyone I've seen has a very flimsy pull out shelf. I saw some that were nice, but in units that cost far too much to consider. I figure buying a used unit as I don't have any wood working skill whatsoever, or putting something together out of scrap, then buying a heavy duty slider like yours and installing it myself.

My keyboard is currently sitting on the box of one of my Krk8s lol.

  • nice how much cost?

  • @cordovastyle3 right around $100 for the materials.

  • That nice I'm trying to me one what is the dimensions

  • pretty cool

  • How did you attach the upper shelving/hutch to the main desktop? I'm trying to decide if I should attach it permanently or figure out some way to make it removable so it makes moving the desk easier...

    thanks

  • Can you make me one ! If so how much ?

  • slinging the keyboard under the desk is really good! I used the same method on mine. One note: you dont need drawer runners - it can simply run on a wooden rail covered with an L shaped plastic profile - this stops the keyboard moving!

  • @stratocaster539 I'll just have to take your word for it. I'm pretty happy with the design, and the glide of the rails.

    Thanks for the comment!

  • That looks fantastic. What kind (and size) of bolts did you use? And the laminate at 1:16 looks like sort of a light oak/blond color, whereas the final shot at 1:21 looks more golden or "orange-y". Is that just the lighting, or did you really go with a different color? Either way, nice job.

  • @uzernametaken Thank you very much..They're carriage bolts, I forget what size they are. You can get them all different lengths to support the desk. The shot at 1:16 was in my garage with the flooring on the top of the desk and the hutch with no stain at all anywhere else, completely different lighting than in my studio. I decided on the laminate flooring on just the yop of the desk and not the top of the hutch, and everything got stained with a "walnut" stain but looks more dark cherry. Cheers

  • Were to buy the wood

  • @TRIINNOMUZIK Are you asking where to buy wood? Lowes, Home Depot, any local hardware/lumber yard.

  • Very nice studio!!! Thanks for the videos, actually gave me good ideas for helping me build a mine studio too. João Frias (Portugal)

  • @URANOSFRIAS Thank you glad to help!

  • Watching your video (and those of CJD and Robfalcon501) inspired me to build a desk, too! I bought the material - just waiting for a day without rain to start working. A QUESTION 4 U: How many inches (from the top of the sliding tray to the bottom of the desktop) did you need to have your keyboard fit? And - when you slide the keyboard under the desktop - how much clearance is there, over the keyboard? THANKS

  • @soulman615 Thank you Soulman, I hope building a new workstation opens up new possibilities like it has for me. There's 23.5" from the top of the slide out to the floor. There's maybe an inch space between the top of my controller and the bottom of the desk top. My controller is a beast, I'm actually going to switch to an Akai MPK49, which is a lot smaller. SO, i'll be reconfiguring the slide out piece, but keeping everything else the same..Thanks for the comment!

  • @ugroove2this1 You're welcome - and thanks for your response. I have my plywood and 2X6's cut. I have my slider and rack rails purchased.I need to pick out and purchase my laminate veneer and stain and - hopefully - assemble the desk next week!

  • @soulman615 awesome...take pics!

  • @ugroove2this1 Will do. Are you gonna sell your Keystation Pro 88?

  • thanks

  • Hi that's is nice can you tell me the dimensions on it please

  • @dame12712 thanks for the comment, i actually dont have the dimensions written down anymore, but if you watch Robfalcon501's video he lists them all, and I followed it completely. The only thing I did different was I made the the hutch 7" tall because that was the shortest length of rack rail that made sense. Here's the link for his video:

  • Hey mate,

How stable is it? the way you have put the legs on looks a little flimsy,

    Cheers,

    Gaz

  • @GarlicSteaks Very stable...not flimsy at all, it doesnt sway, it holds all my gear, and I've gotten on top of it as well...just to get on top of it. You could use a thicker plywood, or even a diiferent wood. But this workstation is very sturdy.

  • @ugroove2this1 thanks for the reply mate, for now ive just added a sliding draw to my L table. might build something like this one day though.

    cheers

  • It looks great btw

  • @AyJayRayGODDAMMIT Thank you, I appreciate it!! The laminate flooring was adhered with liquid nails. There were different options, but the liquid nails seem to work the best and it was pretty easy application. No I didnt cover the edges, but my plan the whole time was to go all out and put some wood grain color veneer banding around the edges like some mass produced desks. I think it would have looked pretty sharp, but I just never did it. Maybe in the future I'll put it on. Hope this helps..

  • @ugroove2this1 Definitely helps. thanks for the reply. i plan on building one this week. I dont think it will bother me if the sides aren't finished. but the veneer does sound like a good idea.

  • how did you attach the laminate flooring to the desktop? and did you cover up the edges of the desktop at all?

  • cool cool

  • What kind of wood?

  • @kidcard1 it was medium grade plywood and 2x6's on the frame. the top on the desk has a layer of laminate flooring for an extra smooth surface

  • can you give me in cm or m the sizes of the table ?

  • @keyportaccess I would recomend watching Robfalcon501's video. He gives detailed dimensions, from there you could just google the metric equivalent. I followed his dimensions exactly, except for the height of the hutch. I made that 7" instead of his 6 or 6 1/2"..I made it 7" because the shortest length i found for rack rail was 7". Hopes this helps...thanks
