Hello Jay, I Lost both my Parents by the time i as 16 years old,and a Only child, and have Owned my Own Welding Co,for 36 years. The Co is 109 Years Old,and Im in forclosurer!!!!!!!!! Your a real class act,, Allways Havw Been,, But sorry to disagree,as I think, you Math is Off,,BTW, I live In Ct!,,,Jack,PS,Please donot take that as any disrespect,,jack
Jay Leno always a class act. Nicely done.Great words and intention for our youth. I have welded for 30 years and that skill has taken me around the world.
I'm a 37 year old ex con who learned to weld in prison. I've not had a single problem finding or keeping work. In the last four years I have worked hard - very hard - every day to make something of myself. I make 37 an hour and 85 a day per diem. for a forty five hour week I bring home over 1800.00! Thats after taxes, insurance, etc. Non-Union. Take up welding, work hard! Its hard, rewarding work. A good life though.
Composites are on the rise and with lots of scrap going to China, I wonder if welding will continue to be in big demand in 25 years. I hope so for my sons sake.
@PCGAMER130 ww2 was not some video game to be won or lost by this week's geek. so america didn't win world war two? it must have been the french who won. excuse me.
@rammstein2k it depends on where you are. i have just come out of the welding program in seattle and the job world is flooded with welders. sadly the only places hiring want welders with 5 years experience as well as qualifications in other fields like machining and auto mechanics. it is still a great skill to have (i can build damn near anything) but right now it isnt in great demand and they pay welders peanuts for the huge amount of skill they provide
Hi I'm graduating university with an economics degree in a few months. I've realized that university does not necessary lead to a steady job/career and have been researching welding as a skilled trade to learn. How will a n00bie welder with a uni degree be looked upon? Is it an advantage or a disadvantage? Should I go to a trade school or learn from an old welder I know? Would really appreciate some knowledgeable replies! thanks :)
@rammstein2k I would go to the school to see the manual processes and maybe modern too. Manual welding still a great demand and think on which type of welding you like to do. Decorative, Aircraft, Shipbuild, Pipe et.al.-pay and skillset vary. Also recognize robot or semiauto, like Electron Beam, Stellite or Circwelding or at least be on the lookout for those. I don't like being an operator for a machine even as cool as Star [Stellite] welding is. Don't let your skills become obsoleted.
@whiteowlonfire When I graduate I'll know how weld Alluminum, Stainless Steel, and Overhead. And I'll be certified in 4 welding positions and processes. Plus I get to learn from the best teschers at my school, and it is all paid for by grants.
I've been looking for a job for almost three years. I went to school and am a certified welder in my twenties, and because everybody is asking for experience, I can't get a job to gain any. How do you start a career in something when nobody is willing to hire you?
At least I understand what he is saying. We're a country that has forgotten how to use our hands, get dirty, construct something from nothing. Ask the average homeowner they are hopelessly helpless. Skilled tradesmen are needed. Operative word is SKILLED. Joe Schmoe welder making $11 an hour- Jay wouldn't let you near his ride, neither would I. Get skilled. Get educated. Earn Money. If you complain, you're likely not that good.
I'm a young welding teacher from the city of Richmond Ca. I started by taking 3 vocational classes that Serra Adult Education offer. Spend about $400 total for all classes that I took and then completed everything within 5months. After that I apply to work for the school that gave me all my knowledge and begun to teach welding fundamental in Spanish. I was making $29 per hour and not just that as a welder I'm making way more doing easy simple jobs like building fences doors and other stuff been
@1987fsg Nice job dude. You are skilled and pretty resourceful. Teaching your skill in another language is great ingenuity. Your only way it up. Keep learning.
jay there are plenty of young welders, the problame is there are bosses out there who dont want to pay the welders what they should be makeing. I have been welding for 4 years and am only makeing 11.50 an hour no benifits no vac, time. I have a family of 4 to support and i can only support them week to week! trust me theres young people out there with grayer hair than you brought on be stress and depression because the employer dosent want to pay the people who makes them money!
very good message, im 26 i started welding in 11th grade, got out went onto the local #597 pipefitters union out of illinois. 4 years later i joined the army as a welder. an a few months from now when i get out i plan to go to divers institute of technology in seattle, an get into underwater welding. its a career path that deserves recognition, i love welding and in the future i plan to become an instructor to pass the skill onto other people so they can make a difference too.
What exactly are you talking about? Welding jobs are in the midst of experiencing a boom.
The average age of a welder is 54! Know what the means? They'll be retiring in the next 10 years, which means a major shortage, which means job openings.
im 17 and i love welding!!!!! Long live the arc! Im at my high school class doing an apprenticeship right now got 300 hours already and its still coming!
Thank you JAY for remind the rest of the country that our infrastructure need an overhaul and is going to take qualified workers with special skills to do the job.
Jobs that cant be outsourced and have to be done sooner than later by Welders who are a special kind of people that are not afraid of the hard work and take pride on their job.
I got my first job as a welder making $16.75/hr. I knew the basics, But Wasnt very skilled. I could mig weld, But that was about it. I learned the tricks of the trade from some old timers in the shop, and actually got to the point where when a job came in, people came striaght to me because they knew i'd do it right.. Got laid off from the place, Now i have my own shop. Work is slow right now, but when i'm busy, the money is great. I'm 24 years old and i Couldn't imagine doing anything else.
im from new york. i work for a trucking company building con ed trucks. i only make 15 an hour welding. i worked for a railing business. thats where i seen theres money to be made.
The country is falling apart because we don't understand that the life cycle cost of a project includes CONSTRUCTION, UPKEEP, and DECOMMISSIONING. Each of those parts have their own significant cost.
But we only fund the construction part because it gives incumbent politicians something to say "hey! look what I accomplished this term! Vote for ME!"
More of the American "use it, throw it away, and buy another one, it ain't my problem anymore" mentality. We need a different attitude, first.
thats great if your welding for jay leno. ive been welding for 22 years. i have 6-6g welding certs, and blacksmithed for 13 yrs. but every time i go on craigslist or other welder job postings around the country, all i see is "need experienced welder pay-$14-17 per hr DOE" is this where a life time of perfecting my craft has lead? hey jay, how bout a job? welders need to stop excepting these jobs until the companies have no choice but to offer more. unfortunatly we also have to feed our families.
sorry people I dont know where thses welders live but my husband has been a welder for 32 years and has 5 certs, he has been laid off 4,6 months now. we live in n. calif. and the most hes ever made welding is 17.oo hr. so word of advice if your gonna weld become union, and dont live in n. calif.
According to studies. By this time next year, 2010, once all of the welders that are in class now have graduated or whatever and go to work, there will be shortage of 200,000 welders. that is world wide. So get that certification and get welding. Pipe is wehre the money is. Unless you do some kind of specialty welding. then the money is endless. (save save save)
@diablo699900 200,000 out of a world population of nearly 7 BILLION. Not exactly awe inspiring. I quit welding in the mid 80's. Went into machine work. Average welder around here makes $16.00 per hour. I make in the 20.00s.
That is true, encouraging young people to take welding and engineering classes cuz other countries have more engineers and welders than the USA now . American only either hiring Indian engineers or ship jobs oversea.
Its great that you guys are getting more people interested in welding. With the shortage of new welders in our field, this is a crucial step towards the growth of our industry.
Great video, never knew you can make so much money doing this sort of labour. What am I doing in my science program in college? :P What I like with it is that its real labour, you sweat from 9-5 and go home for a well earned rest.
I think a lot of people are confused about themselves here. There is a point in which you have to say to yourself: am I happy with the money I'm making and I don't need anymore? There are various factors other than money that should influence you in your life. As for me, I'm a college welding grad who has not got a job still after 6months of being laid off in MA. Thirty-four companies too and they still are not hiring!
Hey Jay, why dont you give up your cushy job and rot in a manufacturing facility, sucking in fumes and argon gas, and staring at liquifying puddles of metal through a tiny green window while it's sunny outside? Like you say, there's good money in it, but really, it's not Jay Leno money. Anyway, good luck finding a welding job when nobody wants to make metal things anymore.
hey exiledred77, nobody wants to make metal things anymore? buildings, cars, bridges, water tanks, ships..... everything is made by metal welding is essential
dude exactly..as i see it the whole world revolves around welding..steel, aluminum, fuck even plastic..we wouldnt be where we are today without it and thats y im proud to be a welder
my point was related to the fact that the auto industry just went tits up, and the construction industry is suffering hard too. They are by far the highest employer of welders. I was laid off from building aerial scissor lifts myself, I know a lot of unemployed welders right now, so if you want to point them to this endless source of work, be my guest.
My Dad has welded his whole life and managed to pay for my figure skating, my Mom's figure skating and our lifestyle, which I can say, was wonderful. He can also make anything out of metal, and even made a tiny pot-bellied stove for my dollhouse! I would recommend this profession to anyone. Thank you Jay, for supporting the welding community!
Hey Jay, I started out as a welder.....and starved. Went back to college and got an engineering degree. Now I sit in a cube and make 80K / year "pushing a computer". Sure there is always a few who get into a good situation and make alot of cash, not unlike being a talkshow host. However, like a talkshow host - WE ALL can't be one. And those who don't make it to the top of the heap starve.
Be a welder if you want - I prefer to feed my family.
Yeah, I'm starving to death, barely clearing $120K with my welding skills. Non Union welder here, making a living without a college education. Can you spare a dime?
I work in HVAC,not welding and have learned through the years that engineers have little to no grasp on reality when it comes to doing any trade related job.
I have more respect for an experienced tradesperson than some degree holding clown who never worked with the tools.
Anyone can draw on paper with a computer program,it takes real skill to decipher those drawings and make it fit.
I attend delhi college in upstate new york for my welding degree. I will walk out of here with multiple certifications in different welding positions. Im a second year student here and I would recommend this school to anyone interested. I just can't deiced on welding artistically, or for a union? I love making sculptures and the freedom of expressing myself but Im afraid that welding art wont be consistent finically. I also heard that the welding unions make you work 12 hour days, 6 days a week
My union, Steelworkers local 493 in Des Moines, Ia made sure that in the Union Contract it said the company couldn't make us work more than 10 hours overtime per week, 5 days per week. Ask a Union Rep. if it states that in the contract.
I know a person here in Kansas out by the flint hills who is a welder. His job consists of good hard work in the harvest seasons as combines break he welds them back together and refits pieces. but when that harvest season is over he has a lot of money, and time on his hands during the winter to just practice his skills making sculptures and art on his free time. He has a pretty good job I'd say.
I know what welders make I am one In the oilfield. I didnt say People cant be happy being a working stiff But my point is You'll never get as ritch as Jay Leno welding. I guess depends your definition of ritch is
@Gunit420123 There are relatively few people in the world that would make Leno type money. I don't know what he makes but the guy he replaced (Carson) was making 17 million a year.
My husband is a welder. He has been for 20 years or better. He belongs to Plumbers and Steamfitters local #166. Jay you are right. It is an amazing job. My husband can make anything with metals. Yes the pay is great, but the love of the job is even greater. It is and will always be, an in demand job. Hats off to you Jay Leno for honoring a true American job.

hey exiledred77, nobody wants to make metal things anymore? buildings, cars, bridges, water tanks, ships..... everything is made by metal welding is essential

dude exactly..as i see it the whole world revolves around welding..steel, aluminum, fuck even plastic..we wouldnt be where we are today without it and thats y im proud to be a welder

my point was related to the fact that the auto industry just went tits up, and the construction industry is suffering hard too. They are by far the highest employer of welders. I was laid off from building aerial scissor lifts myself, I know a lot of unemployed welders right now, so if you want to point them to this endless source of work, be my guest.

The fact is nothing is 100% secure and NEVER will be.

PIPE PIPE PIPE. And shipyards. Charleston, S.C. is paying 25 + an hour. Norflok shipyards are paying 50 + for Nickel and Copper welding.

KFCHambone 3 years ago

You'll never get as ritch as Jay Leno welding
Gunit420123 3 years ago 2
your point?
Money is not a required thing to be happy and enjoy your job.
Welders working for shipyards can make 120K+ a year, and shipbuilding, to my knowledge, hasn't slowed at all.

I know what welders make I am one In the oilfield. I didnt say People cant be happy being a working stiff But my point is You'll never get as ritch as Jay Leno welding. I guess depends your definition of ritch is
Gunit420123 2 years ago
@Gunit420123 There are relatively few people in the world that would make Leno type money. I don't know what he makes but the guy he replaced (Carson) was making 17 million a year.

My husband is a welder. He has been for 20 years or better. He belongs to Plumbers and Steamfitters local #166. Jay you are right. It is an amazing job. My husband can make anything with metals. Yes the pay is great, but the love of the job is even greater. It is and will always be, an in demand job. Hats off to you Jay Leno for honoring a true American job.
